Shortness of breath
I am taking acyclovir for shingles and I'm having a bit of swelling in the throat and shortness of breath should I continue to take it or is this a serious condition and should I stop taking it?
AskDocWeb: Both symptoms should be discussed with your doctor to determine the extent of the problem. These are often warning signs that indicate the need for immediate medical attention.
Question about treatment
Hi, i was told to take acyclover 400mg at the first sign of a outbreak. i take 3 a day. my doctor told me to take the pills until the outbreak is gone. i have seen on here that they were told to take the whole prescription. do i need to take the pills for a few days after the outbreak is gone to make sure it is all the way gone? how long is to long after they are gone to continue taking them? and if taken at the first sign of a outbreak, how long does it normally take for it to go away? i think maybe i need a higher dose because it seems to take a while to go away.
AskDocWeb: Because of the wide range of responses to both the disease and the medication, treatment is "customized" for each individual. If you think that you need a higher dose then discuss that with your physician.
Acyclovir as needed?
I want to know if acyclovir can be taken as a need to take product instead of all the time? And for an outbreak, may I just take it one day? I have a liver tumor, and I am concerned deeply about liver failure here. However, I have herpes simplex one on my buttox, and it's a rash that comes and goes. Please advise on if I can take acyclovir as needed?
AskDocWeb: Many people take Acyclovir on an "as needed" basis. However, whether or not that would be appropriate in your case needs to be determined by your doctor. And while you are there, take the time to discuss your concern about liver failure. That is a legitimate concern that needs to be addressed.
I took 5 days of acyclovir after doctor said I most likely had HSV2. After finishing the medicine I had extreme difficulty urinating. I visited the ER where they told me I had a UTI. After starting antibiotics I still was not fully improved. I saw my family dr and she said I was having a side effect from the acyclovir. It has been 5 days now and I am still having trouble urinating. This has been the worst experience ever, I will never take this medicine again.
AskDocWeb: Have you considered the possibility that your symptoms have nothing to do with Acyclovir? Having pain when you urinate and trouble urinating are two of the symptoms of herpes.
No symptoms for 20 years
I have a question about vaginal herpes. Can it take 20 years or more from exposure to show up? I was diagnosed right after my husband of 22 years died and I have no idea on how I got this as we were completely faithful during our time together. I have never taken anything for this disease but I have just recently started Acyclovir for my mouth ulcers and it seems to help. Still trying to pinpoint what I am eating that causes these ulcers. I had been on Miracle Mouth Wash a few years ago but that no longer helped so PCP prescribed Acyclovir. Now I am hearing that due to new research that Acyclovir could be the answer to weight reduction.
AskDocWeb: Approximately 20% of men and women never have symptoms even though they carry the virus for years. Some have a single outbreak and then never have a symptom again. Changes in weight have not been associated with Acyclovir.
Hair loss on crown
Hi AskDocWeb, I had thick hair. after taking any acyclivir at doctors prescribed dosage for about 2 month i have gone bald on my crown. any ways of getting my hair to grow back?
AskDocWeb: Some people have reported hair loss from prolonged use but not sudden baldness from just 2 months. You may want to have a dermatologist examine it to rule out other causes that require a different treatment.
As for possible treatments for getting your hair to grow back, that would depend on the original cause of your hair loss. The simplest solution would be vitamin/herbal product such as Provillus. Then comes some form of minoxidil that would have to be applied twice a day. The strongest treatment would be prescription drug, Propecia, which also comes with the possibility of sexual side effects.
Shelf-life of Acyclovir
Does acyclovir lose its effectiveness years after its manufacture date? If I take a cycle of tabs now that were made four years ago will they still work properly to suppress my current outbreak?
AskDocWeb: That depends on how many years and the form of Acyclovir. The ointment has a shelf-life of 2 years. Acyclovir tablets, as well as the injectable form has a shelf-life of 3 years.
Lower back trouble and temper issue
I have been taking Acyclovir since I was less than a year old because my grandma kissed me next to my eye when she had a fever blister and gave me herpes of the eye "don't know the technical term" and now I am 24 years old and I have a few concerns. I got lower back trouble all the time, feels like someone is twisting up my nerves in my back. and my temper seems to change fast sometimes. but I don't have depression or nothing like that. what should I do?
AskDocWeb: It is always a good idea to discuss your symptoms with your doctor, especially if they affect your daily activities. Patients who notice a sudden decrease in the frequency of urination, in addition to lower back pain, are urged to tell their doctor, because these are considered serious side effects of Acyclovir.
i started taking 2no: of acyclovir 400 mg every 6 hourly (for 5 days), can i brest feed my 3 month old child?
AskDocWeb: Acyclovir does cross into breast milk but it appears at levels that don't seem to be harmful to infants. The American Academy of Pediatrics considers acyclovir to be safe during breastfeeding.
