I just started taking Bontril this week and I experiencing sever indigestion. Is this normal? If I take the pill every other day will it still be as effective?
AskDocWeb: Severe indigestion is not a typical response with Bontril so check with your doctor. He or she may have you adjust treatment by taking half a pill in the morning and the other half in the afternoon. Or maybe just half a pill a day until your body adjusts to the medication. Taking less medication than prescribed will not be as effective as taking it the way the directions indicate.
Fatigue and extreme exhaustion
I took phentermine for six weeks, and became very fatigued. When the doctor took me off of it (cold turkey), I had extreme exhaustion. So he started me on bomtril yesterday. After two dosas of that I am very sleepy and tired. Could these be side effect of bomtril? I can hardly function.
AskDocWeb: Fatigue is not listed as one of the possible side effects of Bontril (Bomtril is a misspelling). However, some patients have abnormal reactions to certain drugs so talk to your doctor about this as soon as possible.
Difference between generic and brand name Bontril
I have been on the generic form of bontril for 2 weeks and I have lost 3 pounds. I was wondering is there a big difference between the generic and the brand name? After reading some of the other people results, some people lost more in a couple of weeks than I have. I am watching what I eat. I'm on a 1200 calorie diet and I exercise 4 or 5 times a week burning 350 to 400 calorie of cardio per workout.
AskDocWeb: In order to qualify as a "generic" drug it has to have the same active ingredients that are identical in chemical composition to the brand name version. In most cases there is no clinical difference between the effects of a generic and the brand name drug.
The next time you compare your weight loss progress with those who lose weight faster, remember that faster is not always better. Sometimes going faster just gets you in more trouble (like a ticket for speeding). Studies show that 95% of those who lose weight too fast gain the weight back when they stop using the medication. Losing weight too fast also increases the chances of complications such as developing gallstones, hair loss, or even a heart attack. Your chances of having long term success are better if you make slow and steady progress. Good luck.
Concerned about anxiety
Hi, I have a visit with my doctor next week for the Phendimetrazine-tartrate 35mg, I am concerned about taking anything that will speed me because I am still taking 0.25-0.5 xanax prn. I had a rough 16 months and was on prozac and have gained about 30 lbs, went off the prozac but still use the xanax as needed. I also tried to take adipex from a friend after I went of the prozac but it made me feel sick, anxious and easily frustrated so it was not worth it. Can I really lose weight with the bontril without feeling sick and continue to take my anxiety med prn/as needed.
AskDocWeb: We No drug interactions were found between Bontril and Xanax but there are other health issues that have to be considered in order to determine if Bontril might work for you. Note that some patients using Bontril have reported not having anxiety like they did while using Adipex so that is encouraging.
7 years on Bontril
I have been taking Bontril for 7 years now. I am not able to loose any more weight. I did stop when I found out I was pregnant and then after I had my baby, began taking it again. I am frustrated though because it just doesn't work like it used to. How bad is it to be on it for so many years? I keep seeing statements that it is not for use for long periods of time and if you ask me, 7 years is a long time!
AskDocWeb: Both the FDA and the manufacturer say that Bontril is only for short-term use. Typically that means it is only effective for a few weeks or a few months at most -- anything longer than that can lead to addiction or other serious health problems. What does your doctor say when you remind him or her that you have been on this drug for 7 years?
I took Bontril for approximately 2 weeks then I noticed things did not feel balanced as I ended up with a Yeast Infection. I was not on any antibiotics or doing anything different than usual besides decreasing my intake of food. I quit taking them about a week ago and was given a couple of pills by my Dr to clear up the problem. I like the Bontril but I'm afraid to take them now. Any suggestions?
AskDocWeb: If you are thinking that the yeast infection was caused by Bontril, that is very unlikely. Yeast infection is not listed among the side effects for Bontril. For most people the best answer for weight loss is to improve the diet and become more active.
Improving the diet means more than just putting healthy foods in your shopping cart. It also means identifying and avoiding processed food, junk food, and foods that contribute to health problems. There are lots of ways to improve your diet. Eating for nutrition is a good start. Strive for a balance among the food groups, plan your meals, lean what foods make you feel full with fewer calories, start counting calories, and may even include consulting with a nutritionist.
Becoming more active is probably just as effective as improving your diet but does take more effort. One of the most important things about becoming more active is to make the new activities a habitual part of your life. That will go a long way in helping to keep the weight off long-term.
Any drug interaction?
I've heard a lot about Bontril for weight loss. I am about 20 lbs. overweight and really haven't been able to take it off since having kids. I've also heard about it helping with energy and focus. Until a few weeks ago I was taking Adderall and Lexapro for stress headaches & ADD. The side effects started to get to me & the bad began to outweigh the good. I am desperate to get rid of this extra weight. Is Bontril for me? I am hoping to meet with my doctor this week to discuss the option. Thanks.
AskDocWeb: There is the possibility of a major drug interaction when Bontril is used with Lexapro (escitalopram). In most cases the risk of the interaction outweighs the benefits. When you meet with your doctor you might also ask if he or she has checked for drug interactions between Adderall and Lexapro. Our database shows possible problem with serotonin syndrome when those meds are used together.
