Vision problems
Date: 5/21/2012
I took Chantix about a year ago, within a week, developed odd eye flashing and blurred double vision. I stopped taking it. I still have the vision problems. Does this mean it's permanently damaged my eyes?
Karen

AskDocWeb: Vision changes are listed as very serious side effects of Chantix that require medical help right away. The FDA says that several eye disorders have been reported from using Chantix; Infrequent: conjunctivitis, dry eye, eye irritation, eye pain, vision blurred, visual disturbance. Rare: acquired night blindness, blindness transient, cataract subcapsular, ocular vascular disorder, photophobia, and vitreous floaters. They do not say whether or not these problems are permanent but some people are still having vision problems two years after discontinuing this drug.

Chantix pain
7/14/2012
I only took Chantix for seven days and i had severe pain at bottom of rib cage that went all the way around to my back. Dizzy, naucious were minor compared to pain. I thought i was having kidney failure. I already have high liver enzymes I will be soo mad if taking this makes my liver worse. This drug seems dangerous to me. I also had strong heartbeat in my left arm? What was that?
Cmbw

AskDocWeb: Usually when someone can feel their heartbeat, it means that their blood pressure is a little high. Anxiety, stress, or just working out can also make you aware of your heartbeat. However, when it is accompanied by severe pain, it needs to be evaluated by a doctor as soon as possible.

Be prepared
8/13/2012
Here is the deal. Chantix works. I have used it twice once I quit for three years and the last time Im still quit. I did get nausia and they upset your stomach both times I took it for about three weeks picked a quit date took it for a week past then and quit taking it. Due to how it made me feel. Warning expect to go through nicotine withdraws while taking this med. They say you can keep smoking while taking it but it starts to block the nicotine from your system and you will go through withdraws while still smoking. If your ok with this and know it ahead of time so you can be prepaird you will be ok.
Aaron

AskDocWeb: Thanks Aaron, it helps to have first-hand accounts of success stories. Let us know if you are still smoke free after one year.

Out of control rage
8/23/2012
I had extreme depression couldn't stop crying. Out of control rage my whole body hurt. Mainly my lower back. I only took it 2 weeks. When will I get my life back and when will my back stop hurting?
Amy

AskDocWeb: Currently there are no answers to those questions. Your doctor may be able to give you an estimate for your particular situation but it would still be just a guess. Many consumers have experienced significant side effects with the use of Chantix, so significant that some have decided to sue the manufacturer. Nearly 300 lawsuits against Pfizer have been combined into a Chantix multidistrict litigation (MDL). These cases allege that Pfizer's smoking-cessation drug caused significant injuries, including Chantix suicide. The first trial is expected to begin on October 22, 2012.

Not a answer anywhere oh but all the warrings are on the box. So I ask what can my doctor do for me. I have horrible back achs fatigue and rage and cant stop crying? I only took it 2 weeks.
Amy

AskDocWeb: Your doctor can give you some help, whether it be a prescription for pain relief or just a support group, it is worth discussing.

Abdominal pain, diarrhea and vomiting
9/8/2012
I think chantix is great it def. works but after taking this for only a week my husband and I are experiencing abdominal pain severe diareha and vomiting... My husband hasn't had the vomiting just myself, hot flashes and nauseous bad!!! I feel like if I start to get an empty stomach symptoms get worse so even if I eat a couple pretzels it helps.. But the diareha is bad and stomach pains...will this go away? I really wanna be able to take this bc it works so well but I can't deal with these side affects forever?
Katie

AskDocWeb: Hi Katie, welcome. In the clinical trials nausea was a passing effect in some patients but in others the nausea was ongoing. Fortunately lowering the dose, either temporarily or permanently, seems to reduce the adverse effects of Chantix.

How long does Chantix stay in my system?
9/13/2012
I had used Chantix 3 years ago to quit smoking and it worked. I didnt have any side effects at all, but this summer I was under a great deal of stress and started smoking again. (The first time I used Chantix I was done smoking before three weeks) I was smoking for about three weeks this time before I started the Chantix and I was done smoking before the three weeks and so I quit taking Chantix. I went a week without smoking until today I was under stress and I dont know what possessed me but I bought a pack of cigars. Im wondering if I can just start taking the blue pills again or should I begin by cutting them in half for a few days and then take the final blue pills? How long does it stay in my system? I have never had any side effects from this drug so Im also wondering if I can just restart the blue pills untill they're gone?
Scott

AskDocWeb: Chantix is completely out of your system in about 5 days so it looks like you will have to start quitting all over again. Remember why you are doing this because it is worth doing. Good luck.

Bad trade-off
10/13/2012
I have stopped smoking but at the expense of my relationship... my mood swings and anger and irritability are to be point of being almost unbearable to me and those around me. I have swollen gums, insomnia, anxiety, high blood pressure, and the dreaded mood swings... I would suggest people think twice about taking this medication.
