Natural health supplements sometimes have unexpected side effects or interactions with medication that can lead to adverse reactions that are sometimes life threatening. The following is a list of cautions that you should be aware of before using cloves (Syzygium aromaticum). These are referred to as drug/herb interactions.

Warning 1 - Blood thinners:: If you are taking pills for anti-coagulant therapy avoid oils high in Eugenol such as cloves.

Warning 2 - Surgery:: Experts advise avoiding the use of cloves at least 2 to 3 weeks before surgery.

Cloves are the dried flower buds of an evergreen tree of the Myrtaceae family. This tree is native to Tanzania, Malaysia, and Indonesia but is used all over the world as a spice in cooking.

Used as a natural health remedy: cloves are used externally for its antiseptic properties and anesthetic properties.

The anti-viral and anti-bacterial qualities of cloves may also reduce the possibility of adult onset diabetes by stabilizing blood sugar levels.

Used as a natural health remedy: cloves are used internally for the following benefits:
  • Excess gas
  • Improve bad breath
  • In combination with other ingredients clove is also known as an effective treatment for premature ejaculation.
  • Insomnia (clove tea)
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Reduce abdominal bloating
  • Reduce phlegm as an expectorant
  • Reduce the pain of toothache, dental procedures, inflammation in the mouth and throat
  • Upset stomach
Clove is also used an ingredient in toothpastes, personal care products, perfume and cigarettes.

Side Effects of cloves

Clove is not likely to cause any side-effects although chronic and heavy use may cause skin irritation on mucus membranes and gums. Other side effects may also occur when using cloves. (See form below)

As with any herb, a serious allergic reaction is possible. Seek immediate medical attention if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction. These may include a rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing.
