Subj: Morphine in my urine?
Date: 2/20/2011
Feb 20/11 I was drug tested on Wed. I told my work what i was taking gave them a list of all my medications. Was terminated because they said I had morphine in my urin. All I was taking was vicodin, 5/500 and a antianflamatory called diclofen potassium. can these two drugs cause this? I am very confused never would take morphine had a bad reaction a few yrs back when I had surgery and was given the drug thank you.

AskDocWeb: Neither of those drugs have been reported to cause a false positive however, that doesn't rule out the possibility of getting one. Sometimes urine drug tests are just wrong for no apparent reason. That is why it is so important to get a confirmation test by gas chromatography or mass spectroscopy, especially if a job or legal decision depends on the test results.

Subj: Positive for THC
Date: 2/21/2011
I am currently in an in-patient rehabilitation program and had to take a UA this morning. The past few days i've been very sick and have taken a few different cold medicines. But I was wondering if the zoloft (250 mil.) and the seraquil (400 mil.) a day that i take for bipolar disorder could have had anything to do with the false positive that i got for THC this morning. Any info will help, thanks.

AskDocWeb: Many cold medications have shown up as false positives for amphetamines but not THC. In fact, none of what you have listed has been reported to cause a false positive for THC.

AskDocWeb: Sorry Calvin, our focus here is limited to urine drug testing.

Subj: Tested positive for cocaine
Date: 2/22/2011
I recently tested positive on a urinalysis for cocaine, I have never touched cocaine in my life. I was taking several medications up to the day I tested positive. I was taking oxymetazoline, pseudoephedrine, azithromycin, benzonatate, and hydrocodone. Would the combination of these medications have a part with me testing positive?

AskDocWeb: It might, according to the Redwood Toxicology Laboratory, hydrocodone may test positive for opiates (Ref: 33). A GC/MS confirmation test should be able to tell the difference.

Subj: Wellbutrin?
Date: 2/23/2011
My son tested positive for meth he has been clean in recovery for 3 months plus. He is on several meds but the newest one is Wellbutrin. Could that be causing a false positive result?

AskDocWeb: Wellbutrin has been noted to sometimes test false positive for amphetamines but not for meth. If you get a confirmation test you will be able to know, with a doubt, if it was meth in his system or not.

Subj: Lactose intolerance tablets?
Date: 2/23/2011
Can over the counter Lactose intolerance tablets cause a false positive for marijuana?

AskDocWeb: No, but if you suspect that your drug test result was a false positive then getting a confirmation test will clear that up.

Subj: Medtox
Date: 2/23/2011
Hi, my son had a urine drug screen done today by the NP he see's. I took him in cause he's been having panic attacks at school and they sent him home. I gave him 1 of my clonazapam 1mg and that was it, just to help relieve his systoms. He did admit that he had taken 1 vicodine from a friend and 1 adderal as well just days ago cause he was tired and his friend said it would keep him awake. He has smoked some pot in the last month as well. His drug screen tested positive for the THC, benzoids, amphetamine, opiates all of which he admited to but it also came back positive for everything else except cocain and heroin. It showed PCP and other things.

At 17 he just got over the chicken pox and was taking Acyclovir 800mg, benadryl 2 every 4hrs, and he was in alot of pain so i also gave him the higher dose of tylenol for arthritis. Could any of these account for the other things showing up positive? I'm getting him into treatment tomorrow for the pot use but i know him and if he' s admitting he did take 1 of adderal and vicodin and just the 1 clonazapam i gave him I don't think he would lie about other drug use. He has no money, car or nothing to go get these kinds of drugs. The NP is wanting him in a 3 mo rehad but i'm starting with OP care first. The urine is being sent off to Medtox and i don't know if they are one of the drug specialty labs that can tell a false positive.

AskDocWeb: Medtox was one of the first laboratories to be certified by N.I.D.A. (now SAMHSA), a division of the Department of Health and Human Services. Medtox is a fully certified laboratory and conducts legally defensible Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) confirmation testing. Their confirmation tests follow SAMHSA standards, which allows them to tell the difference between a false positive and a true positive test result.

Subj: Nurse tested positive for pot
Date: 2/24/2011
During the past month i have been on several diffrent medications for htn, hypothyriodism, high cholestrol, and elevated level enzymes. The testing i have had done varies from eeg, ct scan of Bacoflen 10mg, lortab 5-10mg, valium 10mg, diluadad, phenergan, tordal, benadryl, ativan, toprolxl 200mg, hztz, linsipriol, ultram, syntriod, voultran. The md took a urine specimen and i had high protein, blood, and nitrates present. I have taken some over the counter meds etc. ibu, and alieve. I tested positive to pot, methamphtimes, and cociane. I am a nurse, emt 2 and working towards my paramedic i have been in the medical pef. since 1997. I dont use illegal drugs im a single mom of 2 teenagers. Could any of the meds cause a false reading?

AskDocWeb: Lortab is an opioid analgesic and Phenergan contains codeine. Many EMIT urine tests misidentify both of these drugs, which is why it is important to confirm the test results. When taking many medications, a GC/MS is sometimes the only way to sort out exactly what is present in the system. It also clears you of any false positives.

Subj: Positive for PCP
Date: 2/24/2011
I have been taking drug screens for the dhhr and they have been reading positive for pcp. I take several meds but not pcp. Can you tell me what drugs may cause this false reading? Thank you for all your help.

AskDocWeb: The only drugs reported to show up on urine drug tests as PCP are Benadryl (Diphenhydramine) (Ref: 24, 45), Diazepam (Ref: 29), Effexor Tablets (venlafaxine hydrochloride) (Ref: 27), Ketamine (Ref: 16, 32), Tylenol Simply Sleeps (Diphenhydramine) (Ref: 24).
