Nyquil and alcohol
Date: 3/20/2012
Is it possible Nyquil could cause false breathalizer for alcohol? Thank u please! Email me!
Lillian

AskDocWeb: The bottle that we checked (Vicks NyQuil Cold/Flu Relief) did contain alcohol but the label didn't specify what percentage was in it. According to Sterling Reference Laboratories, the EtG (Ethylglucuronide) test may show a positive result from sources other than beverage alcohol. Here are some of the possibilities:
  • Balsamic vinegar
  • Beauty products that contains SD Alcohol 40
  • Breath drops
  • Cooking Vanilla (30% alcohol by volume)
  • Extra sour dough bread
  • Fake alcohol such as O'doull's, Near beer, and Fre' wine products
  • Hair dye
  • Mouthwash
  • Soy sauce
  • Teriaki sauce
  • Waterless hand soap. (Proven by recent clinical study)
Whether or not NyQuil has enough alcohol to show up on a breath test is uncertain but it does seem possible.

Hydroxycut contraindications
Date: 3/21/2012
I have high blood pressure and hyperthroidism is it ok for me to take Hydroxycut?
Barbara

AskDocWeb: Hydroxycut has been reported to raise blood pressure in certain individuals. In general, Hydroxycut is contraindicated if you have hyperthyroidism.

Hot for alcohol
Date: 3/21/2012
I do not drink but have come up hot for alcohol. I got food poisoning was put on antibiotic as well as having a bad cold. I was taking night time cold medicine and astma inhale would any of this make my test hot?
Brenda

AskDocWeb: The antibiotic is unlikely to cause you to test hot for alcohol but the cold medicines are another story. Many of them contain alcohol. Always check the label to find out exactly what you are taking.

Subutex false positive?
Date: 3/21/2012
I took a drug test, and I also take subutex and it came up as amphetamine. Why is that?
K

AskDocWeb: The most likely explanation is that you also took an amphetamine. We are not saying that you did, just that that is the most likely cause. Subutex is a brand name of Bupernorphie, which is not on our list of substances that may cause a false positive drug test. However buprenorphine is also sold as Suboxone (which is mixture of buprenorphine and naloxone) and that has shown up as a false positive for oxycodone. It has NOT shown up as an amphetamine.

Help beating a false positive
Date: 3/21/2012
My husband tested positive for amphetemines when drug tested at work. His only options are to say he is guilty(which he is not) and agree to rehab, or take his chances on beating what is obviously a false positive. He informed the lab that he was taking several OTC cough/cold meds and nasal spray, but they keep saying this would not show up as amphetimines. He doesn't want to lose his job, but understandably. he doesnt want to say he is guilty when he is innocent. He works for CSX railroad. What can you tell me that might be helpful?
Teresa

AskDocWeb: You may want to do some more research on the causes of false positives to see if his meds are on the list. The reference numbers on that list will take you to the sources of that information. Those sources should be helpful in providing documentation to back up the assertion of the possibility of a false positive.

In order to prove that his test result was a false positive he will probably need to get a confirmation test from an independent laboratory, preferable one that is certified by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). Here is a current list of certified labs by State.
