I go to the methadone clinic. I've been going there for 5 year's and I have never had a problem with them. I follow never rule they have. One time and one time only, alcohol showed up in my U.D.S test and, I'm not nor have I ever ever drank alcohol in my life. There are thing's this clinic put's me through, that if I were a drinker, I'd become a drinker, even if I weren't one, I'd become one. Now they are telling me that amphetamines are showing up. I don't know what that is. Nor what kind of thing'g it is in. When I found your site, I saw where it listed trazadone as showing up as a false positive for amphetomine. But when I ased the nurses at the clinic, they told me it wasn't that, and their doctor that gave it to me, wouldn't have if she knew that. please help me, please.

AskDocWeb: You might want to tell them that the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services has found that Trazodone (sometimes misspelled as trazadone) may test false positive for amphetamines. They can read the PDF at this government website: This has been confirmed by IT Laboratories, an ISO-certified drug testing laboratory. See Physician's Reference for Urine and Blood Drug Testing and Interpretation.

B vitamins and Ibuprofen
Date: 5/16/2012
I have an important drug test for a job and am worried I might fail because I take B vitamins every day and Ibuprofen on occasion for knee issues. I have some flexibility in scheduling my test- how long should I wait before these are out of my system? Any other vitamins I should watch out for (I take every vitamin Oprah recommends)?

AskDocWeb: The only vitamin that has been reported to show up on urine drug tests is B-2 and that was at mega-doses. The common B-complex multivitamins would not show up. Since the half-life of Ibuprofen ranges from 1.8 to 2 hours, that would be out of your system in less than half a day.

Positive for darvocet?
Date: 5/16/2012
I am on probation, and am prescibed neurotin. I also took ibuprofin, and mobic. Took a urine test and it came back positive for darvocet. I have never in my life taken davocet, how is this possible? Thank you.

AskDocWeb: Was the drug test confirmed with GC/MS at a certified laboratory or was it an "instant" on-site test? When you are on probation that makes a big difference. Unfortunately our database does list any substance that might cause a false positive for Darvocet.

How long does Morphine stay in the system. My son had knee and wrist surgery and was given Morphine 8 times (8 mgs 1 time and 4 mgs 7 tiimes). He then had to take a drug test and failed because of Morphine.

AskDocWeb: The half-life of morphine ranges from 1.7 to 4.5 hours so it is completely out of the system within 24 hours. How long after the last dose of morphine did the drug test take place?

Positive for barbiturates
Date: 5/16/2012
I had a drug screen 2 weeks ago and they say its positive for barbiturate's I had never even heard of it b4. I take melatonin and zantac and zyrtec and ib profine I just dont under stand. My daughter did have a tooth pulled and I had to hold her head and help keep the gas mask on her but I cant see that doing it. I need some help.

AskDocWeb: Hi Mary, welcome to the forum. None of the products you listed are known to cause a false positive for barbiturates. Also the gas that a dentist uses for tooth extraction has no effect on drug tests for drugs of abuse. If you haven't taken any barbiturates then it looks like you will need to get a GC/MS confirmation test from a certified laboratory to rule out false positives.

Urine test for a new job
Date: 5/16/2012
I am taking the med atripla prescribe by my doctor. I read that one of the meds SUSTIVA (efavirenz) causes a false positive for thc. I tested myself and it did give a positive for thc. I do not smoke period any form of tobacco. I recieved a letter from my doctor who told me yes that the SUSTIVA (efavirenz) will show a false positive. I will be taking a urine test for a new job. Should I bring my medication with me to the testing site along with my doctors letter. Will they keep the result confidential?

AskDocWeb: In some cases verbal acknowledgement of prescriptions is sufficient but you may want to confirm that before the test. Copies of your prescriptions will prove you are medically required to take some drugs that may show up as a false positive in a drug test. The prescriptions help to determine whether or not the prescriptions are consistent with the drug test results. In some cases copies of prescriptions should be sealed in an envelope with your name and address on it before handing to a collector to accompany the specimen to be tested.

In situations where a Medical Review Officer (MRO) will be involved, it is better to wait until the MRO's office contacts you so that any personal information, including a copy of your actual prescription, is communicated directly to the MRO.

Your best defense against unpleasant surprises from drug testing is to find out beforehand what procedures and requirements are involved in your particular testing situation.

This is very urgent... my son who is an inmate at south-port corr. fac. was given a urine test that came up positive for marijuana. He has been on a medicine called INDOCIN for a torn rotador cuff and swears to us he did not smoke marijuana. He is also taken welbutrin. b/c of this test, he has been found guilty and has to do 12 month in the SHU which is total isolation. He has tried to end his life several times b/c of this test and I fear for him. The hearing officer at THE TRIAL TOLD HIM THAT he never heard of a flase positive from any medication. OMG. NOW I READ THAT THE MEDICATION INDOCIN which he was on, DOES CAUSE FALSE POSITIVE FOR MARIJUANA. CAN YOU HELP ME BY SENDING ME AN E-MAIL CONFIRMING WHAT I READ ON THIS SITE. this MATTER IS VERY TIME URGENT AND NEEDS TO BE DONE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. OUR FAMILY IS AFRAID OF LOSING HIM TO SUICIDE SINCE HE IS ALREADY MENTALLY ILL AND WILL NOT BE ABLE TO DO A YEAR IN THE SHU. WHICH IS TOTAL ISOLATION. I AM BEGGING YOU FOR HELP. THANK YOU,

AskDocWeb: We have two references for Indocin that say it might cause a problem with urine drug testing. The first is a book that may or may not be available at your local library. Ur-Ine Trouble says that Indocin may show up as a false positive for marijuana. The data in the book is backed by 237 medical studies.

The other reference is from a Toxicology Lab Technical Brief from Dr. Joseph Graas, Ph.D. published by Medical Assisted Treatment of America, a non-profit organization. Indocin is specifically named but it is not clear what affect it has on a urine drug test. (Source: LIST OF PRESCRIPTION AND NONPRESCRIPTION DRUGS THAT COULD AFFECT A DRUG TEST)

Positive for morphine
Date: 5/17/2012
I had to take a urine drug screen at work and it showed positive for morphine. I don't take and haven't taken any morphine. I do have prescriptions for Opana er and oxycodone. I dropped and broke a morphine and had to clean it up and got it on my hands a couple of hours prior to taking the test. Would this liquid morphine possibly absorb through my skin and cause a positive on the drug screen. Or could it be the Opana showing up as morphine? I am currently not working pending appeals to the board of directors. The test showed positive for morphine and oxycodone only.

AskDocWeb: Was the test result confirmed with GC/MS by a certified lab? Opana is not known to show up as morphine on drug tests for drugs of abuse. The accident with morphine is an unknown. Were you cut cleaning it up? Otherwise morphine is poorly absorbed through the skin even via the nasal mucosa. That's why there is no morphine patch for pain relief. Although many people use the term "morphine patch" when referring to the Fentanyl Patch.
