False Positives Forum

This forum is intended to help those who Do NOT Abuse Drugs. We do NOT support the illegal use of any substance. If you have experience with false positives, share your experience. What would you tell someone about drug testing and false positives? Please remember that this forum is not for medical or legal advice.

Diphenhydramine
Date: 6/19/2012
I have been taken a allergy relief medicine with diphenhydramine and my the probation officer said they codeine in my urine. So I had to go back to prison. I don't understand this. Who can I turn to for help?
Core

AskDocWeb: Was the presence of codeine confirmed by a GC/MS test? In our experience, legal problems almost always require the aid of an attorney.

Record of drug screen result
Date: 6/20/2012
I just wanted to add that I am a chronic pain patient with a number of back disorders due to a congenital spinal anomaly. I have been deemed "not a surgical candidate", and was referred to a PM doctor. I have been seeing one for almost 7 years now. On one occasion, I took a urine drug screen, and it showed none of the meds I was Rx'd, but showed positive for a med of which I had never even heard about. Nothing was said to me and I got my usual Rx's, but at my next visit, I noticed they had a brand new urine drug screening lab hired, and had fired the old one.

My ? is, should I ask that the "false negative/false positive" drug screen result be removed from my record? I really think my doctor must have had more problems with the lab than just my test since she changed labs so abruptly. I just don't want that one bad result to hurt me in the future, especially since it was definitely wrong. I am almost OCD about taking my meds correctly. Thanks for any response.
Ghoster

AskDocWeb: Your concern seems legitimate and hopefully your doctor will recognize that. Rather than just asking that the test result be removed from your record, you might voice you concern by telling your doctor that the bad drug screen result has been really bothering you and ask what can be done about it.

Positive for methadone?
Date: 6/20/2012
My husband had a drug screen show positive methadone results. It was a urine screen and sent out.(wasn't the instant test). He has never taken methadone and asked for a follow up test and i wonder if there is going to be a difference. He took nyquil before the test.
Rhonda

AskDocWeb: According to a Legal Bulletin from the Lewisburg Prison, Nyquil may cause a urine test to show false positive for methadone. A follow up confirmation test was found to return negative results in those cases where Nyquil was used so if he had a false positive then the additional testing should clear him.

Drug test coming up
Date: 6/20/2012
I noticed that you state Ibuprofen can cause a false positive but didn't notice how many mg can cause this as I take it for sinuses and aches and pains. I also want to know if herbs like valarien root, camomile, and passion flower can cause false positives. I'm sure I'm spelling those wrong but I don't do any drugs and have a drug test coming up for a job and don't want to come up positive for something I don't do and loose my job because of it.
Kalawaya

AskDocWeb: Chamomile and passion flower have not been reported to cause any problems with drug testing for drugs of abuse. However, Valerian root and extract may cause a false positive for benzodiazepines (Reference: 36). The exact amount of any particular substance that might show up as a false positive is generally not published for a verity of reasons. The main one is that no one wants to appear to aid those who abuse drugs. If is important to know that a GC/MS confirmation test can eliminate false positives caused by valerian and ibuprofen. Good luck on your upcoming test.

Urine drug screening
Date: 6/21/2012
How is it possible for a urine drug screening test to produce a positive methamphetamine result, but a negative amphetamine result. If someone was using methamphetamine, wouldn't the amphetamines come back positive as well? If the amphetamines are negative, would that indicate that the positive meth is a false positive due to other non-amphetamine meds? In other words, are there any meds that can cause a false positive meth, but a negative amphetamine?
Sarah

AskDocWeb: Our database lists 35 substances that could potentially cause a false positive for meth and at the same time, show negative for amphetamines. This is due to the ever increasing accuracy of drug tests to make distinctions between drugs.

Note for Pascaline: Your post about the shingles vaccine was moved to the Valtrex forum.

Fat burner
Date: 6/21/2012
Hi, I have a medical test involving a drug screening for a new employer on 27th June. Can you please tell me if any of the following ingredients from a fat burner would cause a false positive on a urinalysis test? From what I have checked on the ingredients I cannot see any issues.
GRENADE® Thermo Detonator Proprietary Blend
775 mg Green Tea Extract (80% polyphenols, 45% epigallocatechin gallate, epicatechin)
Bitter Orange Extract (synephrine, octopamine, N-methyltyramine
tyramine, hordenine)
Caffeine Anhydrous (1,3,7-trimethylxanthine)
Grapefruit Seed Extract (6,7- dihydroxybergamottin)
Capsicum Annuum (capsaicin) (fruit)
Evodiamine (evodia fructus extract)
Yohimbe Bark Extract (yohimbine)
Raspberry Ketones [4-(4-hydroxyphenyl) butan-2-one]
Phenylalanine (2-amino-3-phenylpropanoic acid)
Cocoa Bean Extract (methylxanthines, flavanols)
pheneythylamine HCl (B-PEA)
Coleus Forskohlii (forskolin) (root)
Yerba Mate Leaf (caffeine, theobromine and theophylline)
DMAE (dimethylaminoethanol)
Thank you for any help you can provide.
Kris

AskDocWeb: Welcome to the forum Kris. It appears that you won't have any trouble caused by that fat burner so you are good to go.

Tested positive for cocaine and barbiturates
Date: 6/21/2012
I'm taking Zoloft, Abilify and Lisinopril and benzocaine and tested positive for cocaine and barbituates. Are any of these or the combination of the culprit because I know I haven't used!
Charlise

AskDocWeb: Zoloft has been reported to sometimes test positive for benzodiazepines but not for cocaine or barbiturates. The other medications you are taking have not been associated with false positives on urine drug tests for drugs of abuse. If you really haven't been using then a GC/MS confirmation test should come back negative.

Positive urine test
Date: 6/22/2012
I stopped using cocain 3-4 weeks ago i started on a diet pill phentromine and have been taking suppliments, flax seed powder protein powder and cla, along with my prescribed meds amlodepine, ibuprophen, prilosec, wellbutrin, flexerill, why did i have a positive urine after all this time?
Jennifer

AskDocWeb: Sorry Jennifer, we do not have an explanation for your test results. Although some of those might cause a false positive on urine tests, it would not be for cocaine.

Mouth swab failed for amphetamine
Date: 6/24/2012
Mouth swab i have failed one yesterday for amphetamine i have been taking sertraline for depression and ibuprofen 800 can these make me fail it for that or can it be food or drinks because i haven't done any drugs
Chelse

AskDocWeb: Sorry Chelse, neither of those have been associated with causing a false positive for amphetamines. In order to find out if your test result is a false positive or not you would have to get a confirmation test.
