Tested positive for coacaine use. Have never used cocaine. I take nioxine on a daily basis. Could this be the culprit?
AskDocWeb: In checking our database we didn't find any mention of nioxine. Are you sure of that spelling?
Drug screen reads alcohol but don't drink
I recently underwent a drug screen as required by my pain management doc. I do no drink at all, nor do I use street drugs. My tox screen read positive for alcohol. How can this happen? I don't even use mouthwash that contains alcohol.
AskDocWeb: There are several food, cosmetic and hygiene products that could account for that. Here's a partial list:
I was the lucky one!
When I had my newborn the hospital told me I tested positive for barbiturates and I told them it was a mistake because I don't take anything at all so I asked them to test again and same thing came back. Child services came to hospital and took my newborn from me. I don't do drugs, I don't take pills, and I don't drink. I was so upset and fustrated my mind ran threw everything it possibly could have been and nothing came to mind except the fact roommates in my home could have been smoking something in the house. I also painted my belly on halloween with acrylic paints, I painted a pumpkin lol and went into labor on the 4th. I told the social worker what I did and gave her a photo, she returned my baby to me next day, thank god!
I think it's sad for the parents that have tested positive for barbiturates and their baby's were taken when they did nothing wrong. This needs to come to an end and they need to have further test that show exactly what they consumed into their body to show a positive test. I could not prove that I did not take drugs, and I prayed and thank God I received my baby back but I was the lucky one!
Antidepressant showed up
Well this question is for my mom. My mom has a rash like symptom and the doctor gave her "Septra DS and Doxycycline 100mg" for the rash and the next day she took a drug test and a antidepressant showed up in her test. I wanted to know if either of these prescriptions had antidepressant traces in them. Please Help!
AskDocWeb: Those antibiotics have not been reported to show up as antidepressants on urine drug tests. However, the urine drug tests are not 100% accurate and do sometimes make mistakes. There are more accurate tests that can be performed to show what is really in her system. Currently the "gold standard" is the GC/MS confirmation test.
I was very curious if these medicines will give back a false positive, i take methodone for severe shoulder pain due to neck surgery thats 4 times a day at 50 mg, nexium, for stomache problems, prental vitamin, folic acid supplement, calcium magnesium zinc supplement, and hyrdocodine as needed, I had a doc app. Last week for a check-up and a urine test well the test came bacl positive for meth and i dont do any illegeal drugs please help, it could stop me from getting my pain medicine if it continues positive.
AskDocWeb: Hi Kikki, welcome to the forum. None of what you list is known to show up as meth on urine drug tests for drugs of abuse. However there are about 50 other possible causes for a false positive so if they will allow it, get a GC/MS confirmation test.
Combination of drugs?
Is there any way you could tell me if a combination of these drugs can give off a false positives for cocaine, norcocaine and cocaethlene... I was given a large dose of articaine, mt prescribed medications are hydrocodone, fluorometholone, cyclobenzaprine, butalbital/acetaminophen/caff tabs, promethazine, neproxin.
AskDocWeb: To our knowledge none of those would account for your test result, nor would any combination of them. If you believe your test result is not accurate then we suggest getting a GC/MS confirmation test to eliminate any false positives.
False positive for PCP and THC
I am on several percribed medications and recently I did a drug test for probation. I have only had intake of my prescribed mds yet still came back positive for pcp and thc. I take Venlafaxine, promethazine, hydrocodone, advair, seroquel, ventalin, carbamazephine, and cyclobenzaprin. Could any of these cause that?
AskDocWeb: Out of the medications that you list we see two that might cause that test result. The promethazine for a false positive for THC (References 3, 16, and 18) and Venlafaxine for the false positive for PCP (Reference 52). Both of these false positives are known to be eliminated by a GC/MS confirmation test.
test showed up for benzos
I'm 0n the Cumberland clinic and I get a lot of randoms. i don't kno why. so I been doin good passing all my test. only thing im showing up for is methodone wich they give. well on my last test I showed up for benzos and I was shocked cuz I had been doin so good. I told them I had not took nothing like that, only thing I had been takin was unisome and tramadol. reason bein I just started there and had the d tox goin on and wasn't at my right stage. only was getin 50mg a day. so now they wont let me go up any more cuz of the benzo. wow..
Recent Hair Follical Drug Test showed up with Tizanidine which I take for migraines. Could that show up a false pos. for Meth. Thanks
AskDocWeb: No. Tizanidine is not known to show positive on urine drug screens for drugs of abuse.
Tizanidine (trade names Zanaflex, Sirdalud) is a drug that is used as a muscle relaxant.
Unclear about GC-MS test
I noticed you say that GC-MS is a sure fire way to clear up false negatives, but I am unclear about a couple things. If a person takes OTC or other drugs will the test examine the suspected reasons for false positives or just look specifically for the drug in question. ie opiate etc. to be clear, if say advil cross reacts with a routine drug test...will the confirmation say...yes the patient takes advil that is why it was positive for THC if you will.
AskDocWeb: The GC-MS test typically does not identify what cross reacts on routine drug tests. It is designed to list the specific amounts of what is present in the sample. If you took Advil and received a false positive test result for THC, the GC-MS test will come back negative, which means they didn't find any THC in the sample.
Why the clean urine sample?
I been taking Methadone in the morning & night for chronic pain! I had to give a urine sample to my Dr and I was negative & now there trying to take me off of it! I drink a lot of water all night & eat spinach salads & fruits, so I wanted to know is that why I dropped a clean urine sample?
AskDocWeb: We know of no food that would mask the presents of methadone. Drinking a lot of water combined with a high or fast metabolism can lower the amount detected but if you are taking methadone twice a day it seems unlikely that that would account for your test result.
