False Positives ForumThis forum is intended to help those who Do NOT Abuse Drugs. We do NOT support the illegal use of any substance. If you have experience with false positives, share your experience. What would you tell someone about drug testing and false positives? Please remember that we do not give medical or legal advice.
Subj: Diabetes false positives
I note in the list of drugs that cause false positives above. There is a listing for -diabetes- testing positive for THC. Can you explain this in greater detail? Or direct me to a website/publications/study that explains how this can happen? Thanks,
AskDocWeb: Sorry Brad, this seems to be a taboo subject. Although diabetes has been noted to cause false positives there doesn't seem to be any investigation into what may be happening to cause that, at least nothing published yet.
Subj: Quetiapine fumarate
Can you test positive for quetiapine fumarate on a drug test?
AskDocWeb: Quetiapine fumarate (a psychotropic agent sold as Seroquel) has not been reported to cause a false positive.
Subj: Novacaine and litocaine
What all will test positive for cocaine? I work in the court system. Some claim Novacaine and litocaine (never heard of this drug) will test positive for cocaine. Thanks,
AskDocWeb: The names of those drugs relate to their affects, not the chemical structure of the drugs. They do not cause false positives.
Subj: Adipex on a drug screen?
I am currently taking Adipex. Will it show a positive on a drug screen and for how many days?
AskDocWeb: It should not show up unless you have been overdosing.
Subj: No longer use cocaine
I am a 50+ year old exec who admittingly used cocaine for approx. 2 years until this past summer. I voluntarily entered a rehab facility and have fortunately been in recovery for almost 5 months. I have voluntarily submitted to random urinalysis tests (5 in all over 2.5 months) that are all negative. The ex-wife's attorney insisted on hair follicle test to establish a baseline for my use in past in order for me to see my son without supervision. The results of the test were positive and showed 2 alarming things -- 1st the content of drug in my hair and 2nd, a metabolite that only appears when alcohol is combined with cocaine. I have not used anything including alcohol for months.
I regularly take high BP med (quinnapril) and acid reflux (protonix) by prescription. I also go to a Chinese acupuncture chiropractic natural doc who had me on 6 different Chinese cleansing and purification "herbs" for about 2 months, taking about 25-30 herbal pills a day as part of the regimen. I have noticed my hair growth is exceptionally slow, e.g., 2 haircuts in almost five months where normally I would have gotten 5, e.g., one per month. Do to the results of the test I am being highly scrutinized and accused of things that simply are no longer true. Can you shed some light as to why I may have shown such a high content in my hair months after not using as well as what may be causing the metabolite to show other than alcohol as there has been no alcohol consumption in even longer than the abstinence from the drug? Thank You for your assistance as my relationship with my son is at stake and I am truly not doing what I am being accused of.
AskDocWeb: Protonix isn't on the list but there have been two reports of it causing a false positive for THC. As for the herbs, you would have to look at each one to find out if any are causing problems.
Subj: How can you prove it?
How can you prove in court that you are taking ibuprofen or anything else over the counter instead of using drugs?
AskDocWeb: That question is best answered by your employment lawyer. We do not give legal advice here.
I think that the information you provide is outstanding! I think your website is great and commend your research. May I be so bold as to inquire your main reliable resources for the "false positives" section? Just curious because I would love to spread the word as long as the word is good. Thank you and keep up the good work.

Subj: Tylenol with codiene
My boyfriend is incarcerated. He sprained his ankle and was given Tylenol with codiene. I visit him 4-5 days a week and it's about 45 min drive (one way) they suspected something and gave him a drug test which came back for opioids took his contact visit away. They said Tylenol with codiene would not give this reading...
Is lexapro a benzodiazapine?
Subj: I have a liver disease
For two years now, I've been on extended parole. I've been placed in jail or programs for about 2 years. The urine drop strips that are used at MDOC always come up positive for cocaine. I have a liver disease. I have Doctors documents along with MDOC records, which confirm this. Yet I'm subject once again to incarceration. I am willing to take any test for this. After I test positive I go to my own doctor's office and a nurse goes with me and she sends it out to confirm that I have nothing in my system. I've been pulled from college twice now due to their false test on me. I've asked repeatively to pay for other testing but I cannot get them to do this. I need to take this to court. It's been destroying my life for 2 years now and I cannot change their test strips. Nor can I help that I have a liver disease. If you go to the web sites false positives for cocaine it specifically states due to kidney, liver diabetics and something else. Is there anyway you could help me please?
AskDocWeb: It sounds like whoever you are asking for alternative testing is not in a position to do something about that. You may have better results by going over their head and presenting your case to their superior. If that doesn't work, move up the chain of command again until you can't go any farther. At that point you may have to start talking about a possible lawsuit.
Subj: Allergic reaction after using my EPI-pen
Hi! Yesterday I went to my Dr with an allergic reaction after using my EPI-pen and continuing to react violently to a wasp sting. They transferred me to the ER where I received injections of Decadron, Vistaril, and IV solu-medrol. I also take Lexapro daily. The next morning I was selected for a random drug test at my job and was fired for a positive for ben.
Subj: Diabetic tested positive for cocaine
I do not use cocaine. I am a diabetic and take medication for this. I recently tested positive for cocaine and I am 100% positive I am clean and do not have cocaine in my system. I called the lab, I called 4 labs in fact and they all told me that there are no false positives for cocaine and yet there has to be. Any advice or information I can research? Thanks.

Subj: Positive for amphetamines
I had a urine test done because I am 2 months pregnant. The doctor's office called me back in a couple days later and said it was positive for amphetamines. I was given another test and was told if it was positive they would contact DFS. I was floored because I could not figure out how that would get into my system, I looked at your website and found Zantac can cause I false positive in urine test. The same doctor that issued the test prescribed me Zantac, B6 vitamin, and Natalcare for my pregnancy, also I have used over that counter nasal spray which was also on your list. Could these meds be causing this false positive
AskDocWeb: Judging by what we have read, it is possible. Be careful that you don't become another Robin Scoins. In 2003 the Arizona Child Protective Services took her kids, claiming she was a drug addict. It took her nine months to get them out of foster care after getting a false positive on a drug test.
Subj: Tested positive for cannabis
I tested positive for cannabis on an instant result urine test. I don't take cannabis, I'm on 40mg prozac.
I am in a Sate program for drug offenders. I am a recovering alcoholic and meth addict. The program Drug tests frequent and randomly and must approve any medication prescribed by a doctor. They approved me to take, Levequin, a cipro ear drop, duratuss (pill not liquid), an albuteral inhaler, and trazadone for a series of infections I had due to MRSA Staff which I was recently diagnosed with and trazadone as a non narcotic sleep aid to ease effects of restless leg syndrome. I had a positive drug test for OPIATES and have not used. Could one of these medications trigger a false positive?
P.S. Can you recommend anything for restless leg. I was treated with REQUIP for 8 months but had to stop taking because it is a benzo.
AskDocWeb: The positive result for opiates may have been caused by the Cipro (See reference 25 and 32).
