Novacaine from the dentist can cause a false reading for cocaine I just found out as well.
AskDocWeb: Thanks Robert, we have added it to the list.
AskDocWeb: That is a myth that likely arose because the names are similar. The name was chosen because the numbing affect of Novocaine is similar to that of cocaine but chemically they are very different.
On your false/positive list in December symbax was listed as testing positive for meth. I notice that it is no longer on your list. What is up with that? I periodically have to be tested and currently taking symbax so this is of much concern to me. More info would be greatly appreciated.
AskDocWeb: It was removed from the list because the reference could not be confirmed. If you find a source that says Symbax could cause a false positive, that can be verified, do let us know.
My son is currently on lexapro. He needs a drug screen for a job. The screen is for cocaine, ths, amphetamines and opiates. Will the lexapro create a false positive?
AskDocWeb: Lexapro should not cause a false positive on a drug screen.
Subj: Test positive by contact?
Can I test positive if I was in contact with someone who smokes marijauna.
Subj: False positive for cocaine?
Can any of the following drugs cause a false positive for cocaine: Toprol(XL), Prozac, Aldactone, Potassium, Chloride, Duratuss, Adzair, Spiriva, Celexa, Albuterol, Robaxim, Lasix, Adalat, Slurbiprofen, Flexeril, Vicodin. Thank for any assistance that you may be able to render.
AskDocWeb: All of the substances that have been identified to cause a false positive are listed on this page.
I had stupidly taken one of my husband's valiums and then I had a random drug test, which of course I tested positive. I received another one a week later which was positive then a third about a week later that was negative then a fourth a week later that was positive. I had not taken another Valium since the 5th of December and my last test that came back positive after the negative was done on Jan 7th. I also take Depakote and Lamictal as well as vitamin and mineral supplements and I was also taking a prescribed Ambien CR prescription. Is there any way these could all have an effect on my results? Also if my specific gravity was low on the negative and higher on the last positive would that have an impact. I know Valium is fat-soluble and I am overweight. I'm just trying to make sense of this as I will lose my job. Thank you,
AskDocWeb: If you test positive for drug abuse and are innocent then get a GC/MS test to prove it.
Subj: False test for cocaine?
I take the following 1 zolpidem 2 amitriptyin 3 sulindac 4 metformin 5 gabapentin will any of these cause a false test for coccaine?
AskDocWeb: The only substances that we have been able to confirm to cause a false positive for cocaine are listed here.
Subj: Adderall cocaine
Please Help I have been going to a suboxone/meth clinic for suboxone and I also have a prescription for adderall and recently my screens have been coming positive for coccaine and even methadone! I do not take either! Any ideas?
AskDocWeb: Well, Adderall is an amphetamine that has been reported to cause false positives for meth but beyond that we would not guess.
Subj: False positive for THC
What drugs give a false positive for THC?
AskDocWeb: Here is our current list of substances that have been reported to cause a false positive for THC along with the source references for those reports.
Advil (Ref: 1, 14, 16, 18, 20, 26, 29)
Subj: Hair tests
How many months or years will a hair test show up positive for drugs?
AskDocWeb: A healthy scalp grows hair at about a half an inch per month so you need to do the math. If you used drugs 6 months ago then the area on the hair shaft that would show that is only three inches from your scalp.
Subj: Antibiotic bactrim
Is it possible to show a positive or false positive result from the antibiotic bactrim double strength other name for this antibiotic is sulfameth/trimethoprim. I need to find this out because I can not afford to have a positive reading for narcotics when I get tested.
AskDocWeb: Yes, there is cause for concern. According to reference 60 bactrim may test positive for benzodiazepines.
Can a patient who has been taking saboxin long term (for about 3 years) test positive for cocaine on a hair test?
AskDocWeb: Saboxin has not been reported to cause positive test results for cocaine on hair tests.
Could Zythromax (azithromycin) test a false positive for cocaine as amoxicylin does?
AskDocWeb: Sorry James, although we couldn't find a specific reference to Zythromax causing a false positive but that doesn't rule out the possibility.
Subj: Energy drinks?
I was curious if energy drinks can cause a false positive? There is a lot of buzz about failing drug tests as a result of using energy drinks on the Internet. Your site seems straight forward, comprehensive & credible. I wanted to list ingredients to be certain: Glucuronolactone, Niacin, Folic Acid, Citicoline, L-Phenylalanine, Amylase, Protease, Lipase, Cellulase, Lactase, N-acetyl, L-tyrosine, (and) Taurine. I did search for them on the list published on your site but wanted to make sure. Also, is there a government/medical site that publishes a similar list? Thanks.
AskDocWeb: None of the ingredients in your energy drink is on our list. As for a government/medical site that publishes a similar list, we haven't found one. That is why we put this list together.
My boyfriend tested positive for a cocain on a drug test. He doesn't do drugs and gets regular drug tests usually passing. The only thing he has been taking is Aleve, can this affect the test?
AskDocWeb: Aleve has been reported to cause a false positive for marijuana but not cocaine.
Subj: POS for benzo's
I have had several pt's lately come back POS for benzo's on drug screens lately, several have been off them for over 6 weeks, any ideas as to why the false POS. Have cross referenced your medication list and found no matches, several have been sent out for confirmation by and confirmed NEG, our lab shed little light on problem, any ideas?
AskDocWeb: Sorry Don, you only gave enough information to stimulate questions. Were all the tests for the same person or different people? When you say "our lab" do you mean the lab where you work or do you mean the lab that you use for testing?
Subj: Gout attack
I had an pre-employment and urine screening had an gout attack. I was taking Aleve and ibprofen for pain-inflammation before I was aware of test, could this result in a positive test?
AskDocWeb: The chance is small but it does look like it is possible.
Subj: Positive for opiates
Can you please tell me how a lab urine test can test positive for opiates if the only thing I'm taking is zanex & Prozac?
AskDocWeb: Not sure about opiates but Xanax contains benzodiazepine and that has caused problems for some people in drug testing.
Subj: Mucinex Nasal Spray?
I recently took a drug test (I take them bi-weekly) and have never tested positive for anything until yesterday - for Barbiturates. I don't even know what they are. The only change in my medicine has been using the new Mucinex Nasal Spray. What do you think could cause this?
AskDocWeb: No lab test is 100% accurate and several nasal sprays have been reported to cause a false positive on drug screening, most notably those containing Phenypropan-Olamine. We suggest you notify your doctor (or whoever sent you for the test) that you weren't taking any barbiturates. They may decide to retest you with a GC/MS confirmation test.
