Feedback on False PositivesIf you have experience with false positives, please help others by adding your feedback. What would you tell someone about drug testing and false positives? Please remember that we do not give medical advice. That is for your local health care provider who is familiar with your medical history.Subj: Happy Camper Date: 2/12/2008 Happy Camper which has Passion Flower, Kava Kava, Eleuthero, Gotu Kola, Kola Nut, Schisandra, Wood Betony, and Lavender. Is there anything in this that would cause you to fail a urine drug test? Pat AskDocWeb: No, nothing you listed is known to cause a false positive. Subj: Ritalin Date: 2/13/2008 I took one of my roommates ritalin yesterday morning by mistake & received a urine test this morning for cocaine & THC. Could the ritalin give me a false positive for either? I can't tell the tester because I'm sure they won't believe me, but it was by mistake & it was only one pill. Please let me know. Thanks. Worried 1 AskDocWeb: We've read that the Drug Enforcement Administration had classified Methylphenidate (Ritalin) as a Schedule II drug, comparable to Cocaine. If it shows up in your system when you don't have a prescription for it, you are in trouble. Subj: Correct test? Date: 2/13/2008 My daughter is on house arrest. She was given levaquin on a Friday for some sinus issues she was having. She went in for a drug test on Monday and has had a false positive for opiates. The FDA and the drug manufacturer note that this can happen. Sorry to say I don't know how to get the system to do the correct test to prove it or even what the correct test would be. Melanie AskDocWeb: Thank you for letting us know about Levaquin. I believe the test you are looking for is the GC/MS confirmation test, that is a Gas Chromatograph/Mass Spectrometer test which can make a distinction between levaquin and opiates. LEVAQUIN® is a quinolone antibiotic used to treat lung, sinus, skin, and urinary tract infections caused by bacteria. May 2007 information from the FDA states, "Some quinolones, including levofloxacin, may produce false-positive urine screening results for opiates using commercially available immunoassay kits." Subj: Afrin Date: 2/14/2008 I have taken Afrin and I am trying to find out how or where to get legitimate info on it causing false positive for meth. I took a drug test 2 days after using Afrin and came up positive and I am fighting the charge of coming up positive in court. I already have a lawyer but do you know of any references via Internet I can print out and use? Of course I have never done any, any, any drugs whatsoever so I need more than just a doctor to state these facts. Stephany AskDocWeb: For references on Afrin see numbers 3, 11, 16, and 18 on this page. Subj: Positive for meth? Date: 2/14/2008 I had a urine test I am using albuteral, singular atuss dr predizone geodon andtrihexyphenidyl could any of these make me test positive for meth using the GC/MS confirmation method? Lisa AskDocWeb: We haven't seen any evidence of that. Subj: Pre employment drug screen Date: 2/15/2008 I had a pre employment drug screen come back positive for opiates. I am not a drug user, but I am taking Prozac and Klonopin, both prescribed by my doctor, I also had a cold last week and was taking amoxicillin and vicks couch syrup, could this be the reason? I really need this job and I want to be able to prove that this was a false positive. Lauren AskDocWeb: In case we suggest you get a GC/MS confirmation test to clear this up. Subj: Paxil and atenlol Date: 2/15/2008 My daughter takes Paxil and atenlol and has tested positive for THC for the past 5 weeks. Is it possible that one or both of these prescriptions will show positive? Brenda AskDocWeb: Neither has been reported to show up as a false positive. Subj: Positive UA Date: 2/16/2008 Daughter had positive UA. She had been taking predisone, percocet and benadyle that was prescribed for her during a visit to the ER. Also took Vick's over the counter syrup. Could any of these give a positive UA specifically for Meth? TASC will not answer this and her probation officer is threatening her. Thanks for any help you can give. She meets with him on 2/19 so if we could know anything by then it would be helpful. Dana AskDocWeb: None of those have been known to cause a false positive for Meth. Subj: How do I fight the violation of probation? Date: 2/16/2008 My son is on probation and was drug tested for marijuana. They said he was positive and sent the sample to a lab which they said also showed positive for marijuana. He insists he is clean, but he takes 7 prescriptions a day including Topamax, Temazepan, 2 different cholesterol medications, Prevacid, Synthroid and Fludicortizone. He also had a cold and was taking Comptrex and Nyquil and multi vitamins. He also takes Advil or Aleve for headaches and Relpax for severe headaches. How do I fight the violation of probation? Where do I get written information on how many of these drugs can cause a false positive. His pharmacist has mentioned at least 3 of the drugs could cause a false positive. Help!!! MaryAnn AskDocWeb: We've added references to the drug list so you can print off what you want. It may also help to get a written statement from your pharmacist. Subj: Ritalin Date: 2/16/2008 I just took a urine test and I'm concerned because I take ritalin and I know it will come up positive for methamphetamine. Should the company be able to understand? Phil AskDocWeb: Only a small percentage come up false positive and if that happens you have a legal prescription for the drug, right? There is also the GC/MS confirmation test to rule out false positives. Subj: Is TASC federally approved? Date: 2/17/2008 Phoenix AZ area uses a company called TASC for their drug testing--are they federally approved? Dana AskDocWeb: TASC does not appear to be a drug testing company, it stands for Treatment Alternatives to Street Crime. TASC programs assess clients' treatment needs, track their progress in treatment programs, and determine appropriate levels of treatment services. Subj: Is codeine an opiate? Date: 2/19/2008 I was in the ER and tested positive for opiates I take lonox and klonopin daily but for a couple of days including the day I was in the ER I was on amoxicillin and tylenol#3 for root canal pain but the ER doctor said that codeine is not an opiate is this true? Colleen AskDocWeb: Not true, codeine is an alkaloid obtained from opium, that makes it an opiate. Subj: Can THC be passed through semen? Date: 2/20/2008 Can THC be passed through semen? I tested positive for THC and have not used but I have been taking over the counter cold and sinus med besides a women's once a day vitamin? Thank you. Tina AskDocWeb: THC can not be passed through semen. You may want to check your cold and sinus meds against this list. Subj: Hydrocodone and lamictal Date: 2/20/2008 I recently had to take a drug test and it came up positive for marijuana and I don't smoke or drink for that matter. I do take hydrocodone and lamictal for pain and nerve problems. Can they cause the test to be positive? Mr.Nut AskDocWeb: The hydrocodone could be a problem because it contains synthetic opiates. Subj: Vitamin B12 Date: 2/21/2008 Can injectable Vitamin B12 cause false positive for opiates? Elaine AskDocWeb: No. Subj: False positive from Zantac Date: 2/21/2008 I had to do a drug test today which I was completely comfortable with because I do not use any drugs except what is prescribed to me and what I need OTC. I came up positive for methamphetamines. I called my lawyer and he found that it was due to zantac, which I take frequently for heartburn. I think more people need to be informed of this. My thought is that there may be people being sent to jail for drug use when they are innocent. Is there a way to inform the public and educate employers, probation officers, judges, etc? Mandy AskDocWeb: That is the purpose of this forum. You can help spread the word by linking to this page with Digg, Del.icio.us, StumbleUpon, Reddit, or whatever social bookmark you use. Subj: Ranitidine gives false positives for amphetamines Date: 2/21/2008 I tested a false positive for meth on a "stick" test as part of a drug screen. Researched your site and found that Ranitidine gives false positives for amphetamines. Could this be the reason for the false positive I received for meth? Also, will my hair follical test and urine test that I paid for to clear my name be also false positive. The link given in your reference section is dead. I am in dire straights and DO NOT use illegal drugs. Please, help me if you can. Thank you! Gary AskDocWeb: Thanks for letting us know about the link. Sometimes the link to http://www.oasas.state.ny.us/admed/documents/drugscreen.ppt works and sometimes it doesn't so we replaced it with their PDF file (Caution file size is 4.257MB): http://www.oasas.state.ny.us/admed/documents/drugscreen.pdf Their last update on this was April, 2007. Subj: Tested positive for benzos Date: 2/22/2008 I recently took a drug test that tested positive for benzos. The only thing that I think I had taken was ibuprofen. Is it possible for ibuprofen to cause a false positive? The results of the test are being sent off for confirmation and will the confirmation test be distinguished between benzos and the ibuprofen? Please let me know. Thank you so much. Jamie AskDocWeb: Ibuprofen has been reported to cause false positives for Marijuana (THC) but not benzos. The confirmation test will show what is actually there. Subj: Is this true? Date: 2/23/2008 I have a drug test this Wednesday. I take Phenergan nearly ever day for a stomach condition, and probably eat down about 8-19 ibuprofen a day for the same stomach pain... I heard from a friend that these will cause me to fail a drug test... Is this true? I also take 35 mh of adderal a day... how will this affect me? Joe AskDocWeb: Your friend is partly correct. Both Phenergan and ibuprofen have been reported to cause a false positive in a small percentage of cases. Adderall is an amphetamine.
