Subj: Tested positive
Date: 7/13/2008
I live in a womens self help program. I was given the usual 12 panel drug screen. One in witch I have passed on several other occasions. To my astonishment I tested positive for benzodiazepiens. The only meds I have taken in the past two weeks are. Cymbalta, Wellbutrin, BC powders, generic extra strength Tylenol, Batrim, Advil gels, Multi vitamin, vit B 12,vit C, vit D, vita E, Omega 3 fish oil, and Zinc. I also had a dentist fill four cavities of mine a week and a half a go. To my knowledge he gave me Novacain and Laughing gas. This false positive has caused me to have to be dismissed from this program that I love and that has helped me tremendously. By the grace of God they trust my integrity. And I will be allowed to come home when whatever is causing the positive gets out of my system. I have had to stop all my meds in order to find the culprit.
PS I also have a kidney infection and I have read that has been known to cause false positives for other drugs.
Charity

AskDocWeb: According to Blue Grass Drug Screen, Inc. Novocain may show up as a positive for opiates on a urine drug test. Another possibility is that either the Tylenol or the Wellbutrin is showing up on the drug screen. There doesn't seem to be much you could do about the kidney infection other than try for a GC/MS confirmation test.

Subj: Testing positive for benzodiazepines
Date: 7/13/2008
I keep testing positive for benzodiazepines when I am not taking any of them and haven't taken them in 2 months. I take Ambien at night to sleep and 150mg of Effexor XR everyday. I am also on Suboxone. Why does my pee keep coming back positive for benzos...my doctor thinks I am lying to him and going behind his back and doing the benzos!! HELP PLEASE!
Corey

AskDocWeb: Some drug testing kits have a problem with Effexor but that wasn't for benzos.

Subj: Glucomannan konjac root test positive for amphetamines and meth?
Date: 7/13/2008
Propolene. Can a person test positive for amphetamines and meth if using this weight loss pill. It contains Konja root and glucomannan. Thanks.
Darren

AskDocWeb: Glucomannan is a water-soluble dietary fiber derived from konjac root ( Amorphophallus konjac). It should not show up on a drug test.

Subj: Lidocaine, benzicaine and Proparacaine
Date: 7/14/2008
Can medications like lidocaine, benzicaine and Proparacaine cause a false pos on a cocaine UA? My husband is a welder and uses these products quite often for welding burns and has tested positve for cocaine and I wish to know if there is a connection. Thanks,
Lisa

AskDocWeb: Those medications have not been reported to cause any false positives on urine tests.

Subj: Bactrim
Date: 7/14/2008
Can an antibotic like bactrim test as a false postive for benzodiazapen?
SHEY

Subj: Hair test showed cocaine
Date: 7/15/2008
I had a positive hair strand test that showed up for cocaine recently for child coustody and I have never used any type of illegal drugs such as cocaine or any others but my husband is a fairly heavy user and the only medication that I have taken over a period of time is 1 mg of Aprosalem per day only at night which is generic Xanax, and I wondered if this is what is causing them to believe I had actually used cocaine. All my urine tests time after time in advance testing done over and over again have come up negative... I would urgently like to understand why that I am being told that I have a fairly high level of this in my system??? Thanks for writing back whenever possible. I just don't want to turn around and test up positive again whenever I have to give another one...Looking for any advice you can give me on this subject. Thanks!
Julie

AskDocWeb: If your husband is a heavy user of cocaine then you have a serious problem because cocaine can be absorbed through the skin.

Subj: Hydrocodine
Date: 7/15/2008
My son took hydrocodine the night before a urine test can that show up false positive?
Sandy

AskDocWeb: Hydrocodone contains synthetic opiates so a positive result is not a false one.

Subj: Possible false positive for opiates
Date: 7/16/2008
I recently has to do a urine test- the simple group category of drugs was tested. The opiate group showed possible false positive. I have not taken any opiates. I have taken in the last 72 hours Exedrin, Motrin, Axert, Celebrex, Lyrica, Topamax, Ambien, Zyrtec, Zantac, Synthroid, Nasonex Nasal Spray, and Ginseng. Can you possibly see if any of these or combination of any, could give an opiate false positive. Thank you.
Sharfst

AskDocWeb: You can see for yourself on this list.

Please note that there are health concerns when using Ginseng.

Subj: Prenatal vitamins?
Date: 7/16/2008
Is there anything in prenatal vitamins, "little red" pills for anemia, baby Orajel, Flagyl, Advil or Tylenol that can cause the meconium of a baby to test positive for amphetamines?
L

AskDocWeb: No, nothing used for prenatal care has been reported to cause a false positive for amphetamines.

Subj: How can I prove that I don't abuse drugs?
Date: 7/17/2008
I recently failed a drug test for oxymorphone. I have no clue to what this drug is I've taken numerous pills for my ovarian cysts and cramps from my period...I've only takin lortabs and tylonel 3 for these problems and alot of otc med...could there have been something else that caused this and how can I prove that I don't abuse drugs?
Latisha

AskDocWeb: It can be very frustrating trying to prove a negative. It is much easier to get them to try to prove abuse by getting a GC/MS confirmation test.

Subj: Positive for cocaine on a hair test
Date: 7/19/2008
Positive hair strand test for cocaine: Hi, I just recently was asked to take my first hair follical test and it come back testing up positive for cocaine. I have too never used the drug but my husband has been a fairly constant user of crack cocaine for close to 3 years now. All the urine tests they did on me close to 8 in all for my child coustody case against DSS turned out all were negative and I even had no fear for taking the hair follical test since I knew I had never used or even been in close contact with crack within my home enviorment my son was also tested and his was negative, except the only way that I feel that this hair test come up showing a 1300 level of cocaine in my system which I am not sure of what all that information means to all these child protective service caseworkers. They are telling me it is a high level and my husband is no longer able to stay in my home over 2 months now. I told the caseworker the only way I could have possibly had this turn up in my system this way is through oral sexual contact with my husband and I have taken the semenal fluid from his body over a long period of time and not realzing that I could have been setting myself up for a false positive test for myself.

I also take the over the counter pain reliever alot called Aleeve due to almost daily stress realted headaches and tension and this is all due to these Child Protection caseworkers will not allow me to live a normal life and always staying on my case since my husband won't complete his program and I need also need to take eacj day for my nerves to help calm me at night for any restful sleep, a 1/2 of a tablet of aprosalem (Xanax since they have ordered my husband out of my home unless he complys with their programs and now since he wont they are now threatening to take my child away out of my home since he can't be made to comply....Please help with any type of info you can provide to help me in this situation in order to fight them in court over a drug that I have never used. Thanks for any information and help that you can possibly of and help me to make the right decision of the help I need on this situation. I feel harassed constantly and feel that I no longer have and could live a normal worry fee life with my husband and son due to all this. Thanks and hope to hear back soon!
Julie

AskDocWeb: If there was cocaine in your system then it wasn't a false positive. It may also be helpful to know that cocaine can be absorbed through your skin.

Subj: Tylenol PM
Date: 7/20/2008
I am NOT the only person this has happened to, but no one else seems to know about this false positive yet...It's ruining my life!!! Tylenol PM. I was taking Tylenol PM and I took a drug test that showed up positive for Benzodiazepines. I have NEVER taken Xanax or Valium or Ativan or any of that. JUST Tylenol PM. It's happening to other people too. So, wtf? Is that possible?
April

AskDocWeb: If it is happening then obviously it is possible.

Subj: Suboxone
Date: 7/20/2008
Is it true that one can test positive for oxycodone when taking suboxone in a urine drug test?
Chris

AskDocWeb: Suboxone is classified as a Schedule III narcotic under the Controlled Substances Act. We have not seen evidence that it has been misidentified as oxycodone.
