Subj: Tested positive for THC
I just took a drug test and they said I tested positive for THC. I take celexa, phenergan, prevacid, singulair, albuterol, and cotrimoxazole ds, would any of these show positive for THC?
AskDocWeb: Of those, only Phenergan-D (Reference 18) has been reported to show up as a false positive.
Subj: Injured on the job
I was injured on the job on Sept. 24, 2008 and needed stitches. I was taken to the emergency room and was given three shots of Vicodin. They gave me Keflex Oral Capsules 500 milligrams to take for 10 days and Ultram Oral Tablets 50 milligrams to take as needed. He also gave me Cephalexin Cap 500MG to take for 10 days. Prior to that, Sept. 19,2008, I had gone to the dentist and had been taking Promethazine Tab 25MG, Amoxicillin Cap 500MG, and Hydrocodene Tab 25MG at the time of the accident. They gave me a drug test the following day and I got a false positive for cocaine and cannabinoids. I don't use drugs and was wondering why my results came out positive? I would greatly appreciate any information you can give me.
AskDocWeb: Several of those drugs can cause a problem with urine drug tests. It seems likely that it would take a GC/MS confirmation test to sort out what was actually in your system. If you don't contest the results then you may end up being labeled as a drug abuser.
Subj: Sudafed and meth
I know someone on probation and she failed a drug test for meth. But she was taking sudafed tablets for a sinus infection. They sent it off. So, will they be able to tell the difference between the two?
AskDocWeb: Yes, that is the purpose of additional testing, to confirm or deny the results of the urine test. The Gas Chromatograph/Mass Spectrometer (GC/MS) test can identify the difference between meth and Sudafed.
Dear sir, I want to know urgently about one thing, After used Ephedrine drug who can fail Methaphetamine in urine test? Please reply urgently to me... thanks a lot, I will wait from ur kindly reply,
AskDocWeb: We found 8 good references that say Ephedrine sometimes shows up as a false positive for Amphetamines, Meth, and even Ecstasy. See references 2, 3, 11, 16, 18, 29, 30, and 32.
Subj: Tested positive for Meth
Can taking one Mucinex D maximum strength dose, Up to one week prior to drug test, along with taking Advil & Tylenol every four to six hours for ten days along with zantac 150mg, twice a day, and one tsp., one time, of Delsym, one week prior to drug test, cause a false positive drug test for Meth? I am asking these questions for my husband. He has been sick with sinus problems, aches, pains and congestion. He also has acid reflux and has been on the above medicine. He went to take a drug test for his new job and tested positive for Meth. I am 100% positive that he does not do Meth. I need some help finding out what caused the false positive reading and what I can do. Can you please help me?
AskDocWeb: Several brands of Tylenol are on the list. What you can do is get a GC/MS test on the same sample to find out what is really in his system.
Subj: Hair test?
Please help me my son is fighting for his grand child and has tested positive for cocaine which he has never done the readings were 1.33ng/mg from a hair test. I beg you for your help.
AskDocWeb: Sorry Norma, the information here only applies to urine tests.
I was taking Equate antacid pills for heartburn and the drug test came back as positive (the same as if I was taking Zantac). The drug RANITIDINE must cause a false positive. Beware and do not take this medication when donating a UA.
Subj: Positive for benzodiaepines
I started going to a methadone clinic about 4 months ago and all my drug screens have some back negative except one that came back positive for benzodiaepines. I have taken excedrine, multi and prenatal vitamins, ibuprofen, and some other over the counter cold meds, no prescription meds or illegal meds. Could the otc medications have caused my test to come back positive? Looking forward to your answer.
AskDocWeb: Yes, several OTC cold meds have been reported to cause false positives on urine tests. You can check this list so see if anything you are taking is on the list.
Subj: Mouth swab test
My son tested positive for THC from a mouth swab test and the place that tested him says that there is no such thing as a false positive from a swab test, that it was virtually impossible. He has been taking a lot of ibuprofen for major foot pain and he also drinks a lot of energy drinks. Can any of that cause a false positive, and if so, would you be willing to go on record on this? We need to know something ASAP, he has an appeal meeting Tuesday, January 20th. Thank you,
AskDocWeb: Sorry Rick, the information here applies only to urine tests. We would certainly want a GC/MS confirmation test if there were any doubt about the results.
Subj: Taking Penicillin and amoxicillin
Hi I recently took a drug test at the DR office. I am prescribed Xanax and Vicodin. I have also been taking Penicillin and amoxicillin for tooth infections. I also had a shot at the dentist for tooth work. I somehow tested positive for Oxycodone. Can anyone tell me how this is possible? Thanks much.
AskDocWeb: Many urine drug tests seem to have a problem when it comes to Amoxicillin and Vicodin. See references 3, 13, 16, 18, 20, 21, 26, and 29
Subj: Drug screen came back negative
I was perscribed percocett from my doctor for back, neck, leg and nerve problems. I was taking this for over a year. When I went to his office to pick up a refill they wanted a urine test from me. A month later when I went to pickup another perscription I was told that I was being dismissed from his office because my drug screen came back negative. I don't know how that could be possible when I was taking the medication everyday. They gave me another test. They said this test also came back negative. The only other medication I take on a daily basis is synthroid. Is it possible the two drugs together cause a negative result when in fact it should be positive for opiates?
AskDocWeb: Sorry Anna, we have not heard of that happening.
My son tested positive for barbituates on a drug test. He takes 800mg of Asocol for Crohns disease and Imodium AD for the diarehea. He also drinks alot of energy drinks. He took some over the counter medicine for a cold he had for about 2 weeks. Could any of these medicines cause a positive test result. He does not take any other drugs legal or illegal.
AskDocWeb: As mentioned about several over the counter cold medicines have been reported to cause false positives on urine tests. You can check this list so see if anything he took is on the list.
Subj: Medications causing false positives
I currently have a adult child that is taking Suboxone for Percaset withdrawal. She is pregnant and recieved antibyotics while in the hospital of a amneotic fluid infection. She also as taked ibuprofen and Excidrin Migraine. Can you tell me if there has been a history of inquiries on this medication causing false positives? And the other ones listed.
AskDocWeb: Yes, others have reported problems with these drugs when getting urine drug tests.
Subj: Info I needed
Thanks for the info I needed to solve my case, and clear my name.
Can a carbonated water drink that contains Phenylalanine cause a false positive on a drug test for opiates?
AskDocWeb: There have been no reports concerning Phenylalanine.
Subj: Tested positive for cocaine
I tested positive for cocaine, but I haven't ever done cocaine. I have been taking Hydroxycut and another Metabolism booster called EVO Burn with alieve. I also take Flonase for my allergies. On the morning of testing positive I took a multivitamin and Omega 3 pills. Could any of this combination be the issue of my problem?
AskDocWeb: Sorry Joshua, none of what you list has been reported to show up as cocaine.
Subj: False positive for benzos?
Do you have any reseach of Bach Flower remedy- Rescue Remedy testing false positive for benzos? I am a chemicial dependency counselor, who has tested hundreds. During a job interview, the director stated that Rescue Remedy has tested positive for benzodiazapine. I am confused.
AskDocWeb: We were unable to find a reference that would indicate Rescue Remedy might cause a false positive for benzos. If you suspect a false positive we suggest that you confirm the positive sample using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC-MS). This is a method commonly used to determine false positives and will expose the truth of the matter.
I take amphetamine salts 10 mg (adderall) I was needing to know will it show up in my UA as positive for drugs and if so what kind of drugs and why.
AskDocWeb: Amphetamines are a class of drugs that are known to be subject to abuse and yes, they do show up in drug tests. Sometimes amphetamines show positive for Meth but we don't know why.
Subj: Positive for amphetamines
I was recently regressed from a non-residential program back to a half way house for a hot UA for amphedamines. At the time of my UA I was taking sudaphed and tylenol cough and cold could that have been the reason my results came back positive?
AskDocWeb: It seems that urine tests have a problem correctly identifying several cough and cold remedies. If the UA produces a false positive it can be correctly identified with a GC/MS confirmation test. You can check this list so see if anything you took is on the list.
