Feedback on False PositivesIf you have experience with false positives, please help others by adding your feedback. What would you tell someone about drug testing and false positives? Please remember that we do not give medical advice. That is for your local health care provider, who is familiar with your medical history.Subj: False positive with Sudafed Date: 2/9/2007 I am an RN. I thought hair tests were foolproof from false positives, especially with the GCMS. Now I have tested positive for methamphetamine at a level of 45,000!! I had an awful cold and was taking psuedoehedrine (Sudafed) for four days prior to and the day of the test. I did not list it because I did not believe in false positives due to over-the-counter meds. Is it really possible? I have been retested because my reputation as a nurse is impeccable and a result such as this could destroy my career and family. The retest was negative. The only difference was no Sudafed on the second test, which was done about one month later. Is false positive in this case possibly caused by Sudafed? Subj: False positive urine test for meth Date: 2/9/2007 Combivent inhaler will cause a false positive urine test for meth, as will Adderall and Concerta. Check it out, I'm a nurse and have seen it many times. Subj: Hair follicle test Date: 2/17/2007 I recently have taken some loratabs, not to get high but because I had terrible headaches for a couple of days. I will have to take a hair follicle test at work next week and was concerned because they were my wife's. I had heard that there are many types of hair test, cheap and expensive and that some did not test for this. I did have a prescription for them about a year and a half ago but that would be expired by now. Will this show up and would my old prescription be ok? Dwight AskDocWeb: Your old prescription will not be okay. With a hair follicle test you may end up with a positive result. Subj: Muffins with poppy seeds Date: 2/17/2007 My husband will be having a urine drug test for a job this week. I bought muffins with poppy seeds on them a few days ago and he and my children have been eating them. How long does this stay in your system? Cari AskDocWeb: Oh boy, it's hard to say, because there are too many variables. If he ate the muffins and is having the drug test in the same week, it's going to be close. Subj: Protonix? Date: 2/17/2007 Hi! Your information is very helpful. Thank you! I was wondering...Is it possible for Protonix to cause a person to test positive on a drug test? Also, what about certain drinks or herbs? Someone I know tested positive for a drug test and had tried some tea, Chinese flower (green tea, I think). Could either that or the Protonix cause a positive result? Thanks for your help. Janet AskDocWeb: Protonix isn't on the list but there are two reports of it causing a false positive for THC. The green tea shouldn't be a problem. Subj: Amoxycillin Date: 2/22/2007 My daughter tested positive for cocaine in August and her probation is in jeopardy (it's still an open case). She was taking amoxycillin and swears she has not taken and illegal drug for about a year. We've submitted reputable website details (your website, other doctor answered cites, peer review journal articles) to the court stating amoxycillin can cause a false positive but we have no expert witness as the doctors here say "nothing" creates a false positive on drug screens (especially cocaine screens). They laughed at me and called me a liar when I said it was the amoxycillin. Where can we find an expert witness? I don't know how much longer the case will be continued -- we thought it was going to be finished today (2/22/07) and now the State's Attorney is bringing in their expert and we need to find one. Please help. Debi AskDocWeb: It sounds like you would need to get testimony from an authority at a drug testing lab. All we have here are antidotal reports from those working in such labs but they would be considered hearsay, not proof of anything. By the way, did you check to find out if the lab that did the drug testing was a certified lab? Subj: Positive for cocaine? Date: 2/23/2007 Can percicet, naproxen, sleep aid, or xanax, cause a positive for cocaine? Joe AskDocWeb: Not that we have heard about although naproxen has been reported to cause a false positive for marijuana (THC). Subj: Tested positive for Codeone Date: 2/27/2007 I recently tested positive for Codeone. I have not taking any Codeine, EVER. I have been on Hydrocodone, and several Cold medicines, could any of these caused my False Positives? Michael AskDocWeb: Yse, several cold medicines are on the list. Subj: Positive drug test Date: 2/27/2007 My husband was arrested for a positive drug test it showed he had THC and cocain. he takes soma, norco and paxil will these drugs cause that reading. Sheila AskDocWeb: Sorry, those drugs are not on our list of drugs that can cause a false positive. Subj: Drug use during pregnancy Date: 2/28/2007 I was 8 months pregnant, with a history of Asthma, sinusitus, scholiosis, and had a viral infection. ON 8/23/06 I was given a drug screen which all came back negative on Amphetamine, Barbiturates, Benzodiazepines, cocaine methadone, opiates, phencyclidine and THC. I didn't even take my prescribed medicine at all the first 1/2 of my pregnancy for fear that something would cause the baby deformities and or retardation. At my regular ob visit the doctor prescribed me, Phenegran, Tylenol Sinus, Tylenol w/Codeine put me back on my Albuterol Inhaler, Vicks nasal inhaler, Sudafed and Benadry for the nasal congestion. And told to take Nyquil PM to help me sleep at night. I was really sick, and she told me it was safe for me to take the medications. On 10/02/06 I went in labor, an IV was started and I was given Stadol every two hours and phenergen. admitting took a urine sample and on the 4rth it came back with drug screen result that states cannot rule out this class for Amphetamin, Benzodizepines, and opiates. So my urine was sent to A lab as well as my son who was born on 10/03. His meconium was also sent to a different lab. My urine test came back positive for Amphetamines AND methamphetamines, my sons urine came back with a positive Methamphatmines and his meconium came back positive for Amphetamine, methamphetamines, codeine and cannabinoids. On November 29, I was ordered by DSS to have a hair strand test done which came back positive for 570 ng/ml amphetamines. Can any one explain all this to me? I have never used illegal drugs while I was pregnant. It's been years since I smoked any pot. I am devastated and DSS doesn't believe me, can you help me understand what happened with the results and where do I turn to do more research on all of this. SC AskDocWeb: You can request a more expensive drug test screen called GC/MS, it's very accurate but then the hair strand test is also very accurate. Subj: Morphine and cocaine Date: 3/1/2007 I got hurt at work and had to go to the hospital and get treated. They gave me morphine and lidocaine for pain and numbness. 1 hour later I had to take a drug test. It showed morphine and cocaine. Will lidocaine show up as cocaine? Scott AskDocWeb: It has not been reported to so - so far. Subj: False positive drug list Date: 3/2/2007 We currently had company wide drug testing done. I take a wide variety of prescription medications and came up positive for methamphetamines. The list of medications that I take are Propoxyphene, Oxycodone, Cyclobenzaprine & Lexapro. I also had a sinus infection at the time so I was using a nasal decongestant that contained Pseudoephedrine / Hydrochloride. I have also been trying to loose weight, so I take a metabolism booster called Stacker 3 XPLC and OneSource womens multivitamins. Could you please tell me if any of these would cause me to have a false positive on drug testing?
