About False Positives

Subj: Positive for cocaine

I recently had a hair strand test from Sept 09-dec09 which came back positive for cocaine at 7.00ng/10mg level. I was on Amoxicillan in sept from the dentist for 1 week. My mum told me that Amox can cause a false positive but I was also havin a sexual relationship with a man 2 times week between Oct and Nov 09 who used cocaine. The last time I saw him my lips went slightly numb so I finished our casual relationship. I'm already in a bad posistion for association wiv a drug user. I am now being catorgerized as a low use occassional user. The cut off level was 5 I tested at 7. I honestly did not feel the need to use cocaine and have been 23 months clean of crack and heroin after goin into rehab April 08. I've been havin hair strands since leavin treatment and this is the first positive. There has to be a test that can prove it was through siliva and bodily fluids and possibally some due to Amoxicillan. Please give me some advice on what to do next. I am 23 months clean and want my son back.

AskDocWeb: The numbness in your lips may have been caused by absorbing the cocaine through your skin. Unfortunately there is no test to determine "how" the cocaine got into your system.


Subj: False positive for meth and/or ectasy?

my mom took a ua and it came back pos. for meth and ex. She takes relacore, percaset and ...benzaprine. Could any or a combo of these cause that. I wrote about my mom and was wanting to know if percet cyclobenzaprine or relacore can cause a pos or false pos for meth and/or ectasy.

Could Clonapezam, Gabapentin, Keppra or Nabumetone test positive for Oxazepam in urine test?

Subj: Tested positive for cocaine

the police found chalky powder from my wifes magnisum tablets and said it tested positive for cocaine. My wife had a liver transplant and she puts the drugs she take in a cup and from puting them in there over the years there was a white dust from them. She also had prograph for rejection and blood pressure pills in the cup, will any these come up positive for cocaine. Thank you.

Subj: Metabolites and DUI

I had a blood and urine test done and it came back as positive for metabolites. I am on at least 15 different medications from Allegra to Oxycontin. Can you help me figure out what drugs would cause the posited result and could cause me to get a DUI.

AskDocWeb: The specific metabolites that show up in a drug test are the indicators of the drugs for which they are testing. There are different metabolites for each drug. Taking any drug that adversely affects your driving skill could conceivably result in a DUI.


Subj: Positive for cocaine

I was terminated from my job for testing positive for cocaine I was battling a tooth infection I used 3 tubes of ambesol, penicillin, ibuprofin, naproxon. Can any of these meds cause a false pos. Can anyone help?

Subj: Panel test for benzos?

I took a lab test fri for a job after taking prescribed vicodin. Yet they didn't call me to ask if I was prescribed it as if it didn't show. Today I got a better job offer and went to same place for test but this time was an icup or something with a 6-7 panel on side of cup. I came up for opiates and benzos. The opiates I have taken n have an Rx. But have not taken a benzo. I have taken ibuprofen 800's, sinus med containing APAP/Guaifenesin/Phenylephrine, and OTC energy (stacker 2-3, and Xenadrine RC1 I think). They sending it off but could something have triped it on the panel test for benzos?

AskDocWeb: Of course it is possible that something tripped the panel test for benzos but none of what you list has been reported to do that. You might want to check this list for other possibilities.


Subj: Benzodiazepines

Is there anything that can create a false positive foe benzos? i recently had a ua show positive and didnt even know what a benzo was. Please help.

AskDocWeb: Most anti-anxiety medication will show a positive for benzodiazepines. Daypro, Nalfon, Oxaprozin, Zoloft, some herb like valerian root, and many prescription sleeping pills can test positive for benzodiazepines. And there are many medications that contain benzodiazepine as one of their ingredients.

Greetings I Love your web site and enjoy its resoureces. I have a question about false positives on drug tests. I know that some medications cause a false positive and Kindney Infections can cause a false positive. can you send me some information on how they cause false positives for kidney infections and what can be done to prevent it.

AskDocWeb: We would like to be able to do that but the reason why kidney infections sometimes causes a false positives is not yet known.


Subj: Positive for Ecstasy
Date: 2/10/2010
I failed a pre employment physical today as they said it was + for Ecstasy. I do not take Ecstasy, or even know what it is other than a street drug. I do take HCTZ and Lovastatin, and have been taking CIPRO. The druggist said none of these would cause that result.

AskDocWeb: Cipro has been reported to sometimes show up as a false positive for opiates (References 25 and 32) but not ecstasy. Neither of the other two drugs are on the list.


Subj: Positive for cocaine

I recently had a urine test for Diversion and it turned up positive for cocaine. I take may prescription drugs, Advair, omeprazole, percocet, flonaise, singulair, advandament, bupropion, clonazepam, fexofenadine, hydrochlorothiazide, lexapro, lisinopril, nifedipine, pataday, trazadone, prednisone, tylenol and abuterol inhaler and nebulizer treatments. I also have stage 2 diabetes, high blood pessure, anxiety attacks, depression, COPD and acute sinuses. I forgot about taking glipizide and lantus. Could any of this cause a false possitive? I've taken a few test and the were clean for drugs and I've been on the same meds. I don't do drugs, so I don't understand why I would get a positive for drugs.

AskDocWeb: It is possible that they used a different test this time, one that is not as accurate (cheaper). Diabetes has shown up as a number of different false positives; Amphetamines, Cocaine, THC, Ecstasy, Meth and Opiates (References 3, 15, 16, 20, and 21). And since Percocet will test positive for opiates (not false) (Reference 3 and 20) you may need a GC/MS test to tell the difference.

I have been taking Claritin-D for a head cold, and was drug tested at my probation office. I was positive for meth. This is the second time this has happened. I need a neww head cold medication that won't test positive for meth. I'm going to print this out and take it to the probation office. They do the strip test.

Subj: Cleaning your system

my question is about UA's and passing them. I am on probation and I recently had a UA I consumed 1/3 cup of vinager before I took the test. The test results were negative for all illegal drugs. I was wondering how exactly does vinager work in cleaning your system is it just momentarily or is it a lasting effect? And does it strip your entire system like fat cells too or not?

im currently on probation and had to take a u.a.. I tested positive for PCP but dont use the narcotic. can alka selter plus have done this? it contains acetaminophen, dextromethorphan hydrobromide, doxylamine succinate, and phenylephrine.

my neighbor has been taking seizure meds all his life, he is currently taking carbatol, topamax and keppra. His court appointed drug testing showed up positive and his meds are the only drugs he takes. could one of these medications have caused this to occur?

My husband takes Symbyax and has to take random drug test at work. Can this show up as a positive on a drug screening?

My friend's dad tested positive for meth but he hasn't used it....He doesn't use it. He takes a good amount of medications and/or pain relievers for back problems. Could it be a false positive?

Subj: Failed for THC

i recently failed a piss test they said it was thc. before the test i took ibeprofen and drank 2 monster energy drinks which contains riboflavin (vitamin b2) I havent smoked in 2 years. and iv took numerous tests be4 and never failed please help

AskDocWeb: If you believe the test results are a false positive then go for the GC/MS confirmation test. They will send your original sample to an outside lab for confirmation and the false positive will be revealed. You may have to pay for the additional testing out of your own pocket but it is worth it.
