Subj: Nyquil and alcohol
Date: 3/4/2007
My wife has had a history of low and high blood sugar but every time she goes in for complete fasting panel blood work she comes back some what normal. Both my wife and I had a total of nine deaths in our family beginning with my mother then ending with my wife's parents 1 1/2 months apart. Their deaths were unexpected, my wife did drink heavily for almost 2 years very depressed (5th of vodka almost every 2 days until there was intervention from our pastor and family).

My wife has been alcohol free for 8 months. On Thursday March 2 she has been fighting the flu and sinus problem for 2 weeks and on an empty stomach for 18 hours. She had been taking Vicks Nyquil 10 fl oz bottle almost the whole bottle within 10 hour period; she took 2 tables of Nyquil at 7:00am and went to work. Here boss smelled alcohol and thought that she had been drinking so sent her to the Concentra Med CTR for a test she tested positive for Alcohol then also gave her a urine test, still pending.

The Lab tech said that there is no way any over the counter cough medicine would show up like this basically you can drink a gallon. I began to call the pharmacies the hospital and even the Sheriff dept they all said that if you over do the medication it would show up. We need some proof that this is true there can be false reading. On that same day I drove 72 miles back home to get my wife a full lab work done and this was 4 hours later, but I believe this will only show a sugar count and not what Nyquil has in it. Please is there anything I can show them that Nyquil will read on a Breathalyzer because that what they used. Please help,
Mitzi
AskDocWeb: Sorry, there are other ingredients in Nyquil that have a far stronger odor than alcohol. Even if she overdosed on the Nyquil her breath is not likely to smell of alcohol.

Subj: Failed drug test
Date: 3/5/2007
I failed a random drug test for marijuana, 1 week later the concentration level of nanograms were supposedly higher, which I don't believe, could this be possible, without ingesting any marijuana, or could my metabolism be excreting it through fatty tissue ...I am 300 lbs. and 6ft. 6in.
Mattypaula

AskDocWeb: Yes, it can be released from fatty tissue.

Subj: False positive with Percogeasic
Date: 3/5/2007
I was UA'd for a new job, and tested positive for meth. I will admit that I used in the past, but have not in over 6 months. I was told that the Percogeasic that I use for headaches could cause a false positive. Can you give any info?
Bill

Subj: Positive for cocaine
Date: 3/6/2007
I was using Farenheit diet pills for weight loss for four months and CPS was called on me and they asked for a hair follicle test. I admitted to smoking marijuana for 11 years and the test came back positive for cocaine and not marijuana? Some articles I have read say that people with dark coarse hair tend to get more false positives for cocaine. Is that true? I know I have not used cocaine and now my children have been at their grandmother's house for six months because CPS does not believe that I am not doing drugs. I do have an attorney but it still does not change the fact that I cannot explain why I am testing positive for a drug that I do not use. Needless to say I quit smoking marijuana the day CPS showed up at my door. My boyfriend was hospitalized in December for pneumonia and I had him take a hair follicle test so that he could show them a negative drug test but he came back positive for cocaine. He swears that he hasn't used drugs for two years but the drug testing reps swear by their testing methods. He does work out in the oil fields and he works for a large highly reputable company. This company does random urinalysis testing and he passes them. He was told by a plasma center that he came back positive for Hepatitis and that he should get that checked. The specialist did not specify which one A or B, but that it was not C. Would that give a false positive drug test result in the hair? He drinks Rockstar energy drinks like water. He drinks about 2 a day when he's at work and he is always complaining about back pain. What do you think we should do?
Lori

AskDocWeb: We haven't heard of dark hair being more likely to test positive for drugs. Some of those energy drinks are very hard on the kidneys. It is possible that his back pain could be the result of kidney stress.

Subj: Acetaminophen w/codeine
Date: 3/7/2007
Can acetaminophen w/codeine make a person show positive for cocaine. on the test I used it had three indicators one for THC, one for AMT, and one for COC. So the question I am asking is under which category would it fall. Because after researching it seems to fall under opiates.
Issac

AskDocWeb: Yes, you are correct, Codeine is obtained from opium.

Subj: Failed for morphine
Date: 3/7/2007
I am on the house arrest and am drug tested regularly. I was tested today and failed for morphine? I am taking lortab for pain. Could lortab give you a false reading for morphine? If not, then what can? I have never taken morphine and this is really bothering me!
Velvet

AskDocWeb: Yes, Lortab is an opioid analgesic (made from or containing opium).

Subj: Adderall and Symbyax
Date: 3/7/2007
My son has a drug addiction and we have to perform random test. We were told that Adderall can show up positive for amphetamines on a drug test. Is this correct? Also, he has just started taking Symbyax. Can this show to be positive for methamphetamines or any other type of positive?
Mary

AskDocWeb: Yes, both Adderall and Symbyax could show up on drug test as meth.

Subj: Vicodin
Date: 3/8/2007
How long will vicodin show up in a urine test and what does it show as?
Pat

AskDocWeb: Since it's derived from opium, it would show up as an opioid. It wouldn't be a false positive test because it is an opioid.

Subj: Diabetic question
Date: 3/9/2007
I have a question if you could answer it. I am a diabetic and have been for the past 17 years and have recently been told that I also have renal disease. I apply for a job that required drug testing and they said I tested positive for cocaine. The MRO said that is was not from any of the medications I am currently taking. I have never used drugs in my life. Is there any way of proving that I do not use illegal drugs? Does this have anything to do with my being a diabetic? Does the Diabetes Association have any documentation on this if this is the case? Do you know where I can get info?
MarQuan

AskDocWeb: You could contact your Diabetes Education Department at your local hospital.

Subj: Tested positive for THC
Date: 3/9/2007
I was required by my new employer to take a drug test. I wasn't worried since it had been about a month since I last smoked any pot because I was searching for a job and might be tested. I was called in and talked to today my test came back positive for THC at an astounding number. Their standard is 50 and my number was 660!!! I was mortified!!! I do have kidney disease, I've been a stone passer for almost 30 years now and it's taken its toll on my right kidney. I have been dealing with a bit of discomfort lately so in lieu of taking my prescription pain medication I've taken some ibuprofen (yes I know it's hard on my kidneys) and I'm wondering if those could be the culprits that caused my number to be so high. Thank goodness I didn't lose my job over this but now I have the humiliation of facing those people. Help please!
Laurie

AskDocWeb: Ibuprofen has been reported to cause false positives for Marijuana (THC).

Subj: Drugs given during child birth
Date: 3/10/2007
What drugs can be given during child birth to make a mother come up positive for Barbiturates and TCA's. Mom denies taking any such drug. She tested positive, baby did not! She did take a Benadryl and Vicodin as prescribed the day before labor.
Jo

AskDocWeb: Vicodin can cause a positive drug test. Also Benadryl (Diphenhydramine) has been reported to show up as false positives for Benzodiazepines, PCP, and Tricyclic Antidepressants 2-4 days after a single use. (Reference 45).

Subj: Omeprazole
Date: 3/12/2007
Can omeprazole test positive for marijuana
Nicole

AskDocWeb: Omeprazole is not on the list.

Subj: Valium
Date: 3/12/2007
I think that a friend of mine is taking valium and the company that he works for conducts drug testing by urine. I am now attempting this friend to stop using this product, can you tell me how long it will remain in their system before they will come up negative on a test. Thank you
Sandy

AskDocWeb: Everyone is different as far as how long their bodies will retain a drug in their system. To be on the safe side, he should be off this drug for a month.
