Nothing seems to help
Date: 6/2/2012
HI AskDocWeb, I have been having this gas problem for years nothing seems to help, iv visited the hospital until i gave up. I know it started as a result of skipping meals, i used to have a busy life resulting to sleeping on empty stomach. Do you have a natural medication that i can follow? please help.

AskDocWeb: You may find the article about the Causes of Bloating helpful. It lists the common medications for bloating and gas.

Magnesium Citrate
This was very helpful ;) Thank you I needed this so much. I've been feeling gassy & bloated for the past couple of days. I also been using Magnesium Citrate to cleanse my Colon.

AskDocWeb: Although reactions to Magnesium Citrate are rare it is known to cause minor nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, and bloating. Magnesium Sulphate (Epsom salts) also has a cleansing effect but without those symptoms. The US government has published upper limits for Magnesium and their advice is as follws:

"Magnesium UL: 350 mg daily from supplements only. Higher doses may cause diarrhea and abdominal cramping in some people. However experts say such distress subsides as the body adapts to higher doses or you stop taking it. There is no known lasting damage."

Gas distress
I have bad IBS for many years now. I have lots of smelly gases every day. It's so bad that it stress me especially at work and around people. I try everything and nothing works. COULD YOU PLEASE HELP ME!!! THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

AskDocWeb: If you have already read the basic information page about IBS take a look at Digestive Science IBS Relief System. It's a three-step relief system.

Step one consists of the CoBalance IBS Support daily supplement consisting of natural ingredients, minerals, enzymes and fibers, for immediate yet gentle pain relief.

Step two is the Maximum Digestion Probiotic supplement. Probiotics are the friendly bacteria that balance the microflora in the gut, for relief and digestive balance.

Step three is the Daily Digestion Support, which is a nutrient/fiber supplement that you mix with water and drink once a day. Let us know what you think.

Reasons for feeling bloated

AskDocWeb: Is there something you would like to add?

I have been having problems regading the above and have had 3 different tests for pancreatitus, gall bladder and liver. Tests came back normal. Over the years I have had the IBS and currently I am under a lot of stress so I believe this information has been helpful. Thank you.

Very helpful information!

AskDocWeb: There are a few spices that help to relieve gas. Cinnamon, cloves, and garlic are potent in reducing gas. Note that the potency of garlic increases when heated, whereas the potency of cinnamon decreases. Other spices have a smaller effect in reducing gas, including turmeric, black pepper, ginger, and asafoetida.

Asafoetida, also known as Hing, is a powdered spice used in Indian vegetarian cooking.

Candidas fungus
Date: 1/26/2014
Candidas fungus and/or yeast is the major contributor to frequent gas and IBS. Instant relief: 1 tsp of baking soda, or alka seltzer. Everyone has a certain amount of yeast in stomach, but can mutate into a fungus which is hard if not incurable. This happens when you don't replace the good bacteria with a supplement when taking antibiotics. Doc, I strongly suspect the fungus in my lower intestine. Is there a blood test for this?

AskDocWeb: Candida is a fungus, which is also a form of yeast. In a healthy individual a small amount of Candida lives in the mouth and intestines. Its normal function is to aid with digestion helps your body absorb nutrients. However, when overproduced, candida can break down the wall of the intestine and cause a leaky gut. This allows toxic byproducts to penetrate the bloodstream, which can lead to many different health problems.

There are three main tests for Candida overgrowth; blood test, stool test, and a urine test called organix dysbiosis. Blood tests for Candida can often be negative even when the stool or urine test is positive.

It's a nightmare
Date: 7/6/2015
Thanks for this page. I exercise regularly, eat right (whole grains, good fats e.g. avocados, nuts,). But, I always feel full even after getting up in the morning. My stomach gets bloated by the end of the day and I look like I am pregnant. I have tried gas x and it doesn't help. I am always burping and passing gas. It's a nightmare. Please help.

AskDocWeb: That certainly sounds awful. If you haven't already you may want to consult with a gastroenterologist. That's a physician who specializes in diseases of the digestive system, also called the gastrointestinal (GI) tract.
