Subj: Stomach pain
Date: 12/17/2008
About 4 months ago my fiance had strained his chest badly and was told to take 800mg of Ibuprofen every so often through out the day. He never takes pills but was in a lot of pain so did as the doctor said. (by the way he also has horrble asthma) He only took it for about 2 1/2-3 days because he was having really bad stomache pain. The pain slowed after he stopped taking it, but it gets highly aggrivated depending on what he eats/drinks. Could this be an ulcer? What can he do to help it? He doesn't have ins. so he doesn't want to go back to the doctor. We've been just making sure he eats a bland diet, which seems to help. Would alkalyne pills or probiotics help?
Rachel

AskDocWeb: The risk of serious stomach and bowel problems, including bleeding, ulcers, and holes in the stomach and bowel, is increased while using Ibuprofen. Without a medical examination there is no way to know if alkaline pills would help or not. On the other hand, probiotics are not likely to hurt anything.

Subj: Advil gel tablets
Date: 12/24/2008
I was using Advil gel tablets two to six a day for a couple of days and I had stomach bleeding. I stop taking them and the bleeding went away. A couple of months later I started having stomach problems. I went to a doctor he did a scope test to check my stomach and said it was slightly inflamed. Now I'm in the process of trying to get better. Its been about six months that I have been experiencing problems. I will never take advil or motrin again.

Subj: Extended usage of ibuprofen
Date: 1/7/2009
I have a question about extended usage of ibuprofen products. Over the years I have taken ibuprofen for lower back pain and hip/leg pain. Could this extended usage create other health problems. Specifically, cardiac issues. Thanks,
Jana

AskDocWeb: The only cardiac issue we seen raised was the possibility that ibuprofen may reduce the benefit of aspirin on the heart in cases where the two are taken too closely together. Other health problems that may arise from long-term use of ibuprofen include an increased risk of gastrointestinal problems (2-4%) in those taking it one year or longer.

A study of long-term ibuprofen users published in 2001 in the journal Drug Safety Vol 24(No. 12) pages 929-938 concluded: "At 12 months, long term users were significantly more likely than short term users or non-users to have experienced dizziness, skin rash, itchy skin and wheeziness in the previous week." These symptoms are characteristic of allergic reactions.

As with other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, long-term administration of ibuprofen to animals has resulted in abnormal kidney function. In humans, there have been reports of reduction in renal blood flow or blood volume. Those patients at high risk who chronically take ibuprofen should have renal function monitored if they have symptoms of mild azotemia, such as malaise, fatigue, loss of appetite, etc.

On the good side, according to a study published in the May 6, 2008, issue of Neurology® (the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology), long term use of ibuprofen may be associated with a reduced risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. The study found people who specifically used ibuprofen for more than five years were more than 40% less likely to develop Alzheimer's disease. Results also showed that the longer ibuprofen was used, the lower the risk for dementia. In addition, people who used certain types of NSAIDs for more than five years were 25% less likely to develop Alzheimer's disease than non-users.

Subj: Ibuprofen for migraines
Date: 1/8/2009
I take Ibuprofen for my migraines and this website has been very helpful, especially since I am doing my 7th grade science fair project on how fast different types of ibuprofen dissolve.

Subj: BP and heart rate suddenly high
Date: 1/11/2009
I am on large doses of ibuprofen per my psychiatrist + 100 mg Zoloft q.d. My BP, heart rate are high suddenly. Can this be the cause. heart rate 107
Tanya

AskDocWeb: Please report this to your doctor as soon as possible. The risk of serious and sometimes fatal heart problems, heart attack and stroke may be increased with the use of Ibuprofen. This risk may be increased the longer Ibuprofen is used. The risk may also be higher in patients who have heart problems or who are at risk for heart problems.

Date: 2/13/2009

Subj: False positive for marijuana on a urine test?
Date: 3/15/2009
I am taking Ibuprofen 8oo mg 3x a day, Baclofen 20mg 3x a day, Lortab 10/500 mg 3x a day, and valum 2mg 3x a day (as needed) and I need to know if any of these will cause a false positive for marijuana on a urine test?
Marcia

AskDocWeb: Ibuprofen has been reported to sometimes show up as a false positive for Marijuana (THC), (see references 1, 3, 16, 18, and 29).

Subj: Anyone else?
Date: 3/16/2009
Hey I have been taken ibprofen for years. I started will playing college basketball. I only take the recommended dosage and not more than 800 mg. when my doctor told me to. I have been experiencing pain in by ball sack when I take it now for more than two days straight. I think it is a side effect from the ibprofen. Has anyone else complained about the same thing?
Gerard

AskDocWeb: Please get this checked by your doctor because that is not listed as a side effect of Ibuprofen.

Subj: Untraceable blood concentrations?
Date: 3/18/2009
I had used Ibuprofen daily for a long period of time and recently have developed untraceable blood concentrations in my urine (not visible to the eye). I have had a full MRI and my organs are normal, but wonder if this could be contributing to the problem. I have stopped taking Ibruprofen as it was the only drug I was taking when this symptom occurred, but still have no clear diagnosis for this.
Charlene

AskDocWeb: Sorry Charlene, you left out the name and nature of your symptom.

Subj: Could I be getting allergic
Date: 3/23/2009
I take ibuprophen on a regular basis and have for years. I have developed a red rash on my arms and chest that won't go away. My doc has tried everything from steroids, ster. cream, yeast meds and also yeast cr. Could I be getting allergic to ibuphrophen??
kristie

AskDocWeb:

AskDocWeb: Yes, it is possible to develop an allergic reaction to a drug even after a long period of use. A major concern here is that once you develop an allergic reaction to a drug, each new dose after that may cause increasingly severe reactions. Please check with your doctor as soon as possible.

Subj: Cross country training
Date: 3/30/2009
My 15yr old son takes ibuprofen regularly for pain in his muscles before, during and after he runs for cross country training. I am concerned that he is using the ibuprofen as substitute for proper conditioning. What can I say to him to prevent him from becoming too dependent on ibuprofen?
Patty

AskDocWeb: It sounds like he may not know the difference between the ache of tired muscles and the pain of damaged muscles. You might try explaining to him that pain is the body's way of letting you about damage. The more pain, the worse the damage. If an activity is causing pain, the pain makes you stop doing that activity in order to avoid doing further damage. If drugs are used to mask the pain that then you run the risk of doing a lot more damage. That is not training, that is drug abuse.

Subj: Having heart palpitations when taking Ibuprofen
Date: 4/1/2009
I have used Ibuprofen for years and never had any problems, but the last couple of months I've noticed that my heart starts beating funny within 15 minutes of taking Ibuprofen. I don't use caffine, or other stimulants, and I noticed other people have complained of having heart palpatations when taking Ibuprofen. Maybe someone should check into these complaints.
Janet

Subj: Allergic reaction
Date: 5/1/2009
I gave my 8 year old daughter Motrin for a fever and she broke out in a rash. Her cheeks are very red and swollen and she is complaining that she is hot "on the inside". I think it's an allergic reaction and not necessarily related to her sickness. Just thought I'd drop a line in case any of you experience this!
Jessica

Subj: Sore muscles
Date: 6/25/2009
I was wondering if ibuprofen could cause sore musles. I have very very sore musles on the back of my thighs and I can heardly do anything. They are like hard knots.
Sandy

AskDocWeb: There is nothing listed about sore muscles but leg pain should be reported to your doctor.

Subj: For Sharon...RE: Hot Flashes while on Ibuprofen
Date: 6/25/2009
I had the same problem with hot flashes, which only increased with my age(59). After going off of it for two months all flashes stopped, but my arthritis got so bad and one year later I went back on the Ibuprofen 800mg 3x's per day and here I go again, hot flashes all over. I've taken Ibuprofen for a total of 10years and yes my doctor protects my stomach and checks the kidneys etc. This is still the best pain reliever for my body!

Subj: Natural alternates for pain relief?
Date: 7/3/2009
I was perscribed heavy doses of ibuprofen for the better part of five years. It lead to a variety of heath problems which I am still dealing with today. Nausea, heartburn, headaches and passing blood were just a few of the 'benefits' of 800mg motrin tablets. As an alternate for pain relief of longterm injury and osteoarthritis, tylenol has produce it's own batch of side effects. Currently I find myself bouncing from med to med until I find one that agrees with me- celebrex, meloxicam, etc are there any more natural alternatives that I may find relief with? Glucosamine has definitely helped, but I can tell the weather days ahead of time and would luv to get a good nights sleep.
Wookie

AskDocWeb: We have found, from personal experience, that glucosamine is even more effective when combined with chondroitin. Health food stores and holistic healing centers can offer a wide variety of natural alternatives for pain relief. We have listed a few of them here. Also note that there are a few health concerns with using glucosamine.
