So I am worried about my hair. My hair is very thin. When I wash my hair and taking hand on my hair, so at least 20-30 hair loss suddenly. It is happening daily for about two years. I am using minoxidil 5% for about 10 days but no results but my hair is very dry and thinner. I am so worried about this matter. Please help me and suggest me. I am also using EpiVite tablet for hairs about 10 days. Muhammad AskDocWeb: You may be using the wrong product. Please visit a dermatologist to find out why you are loosing hair. Subj: Need hair to conceal burn scars Date: 10/13/2007 I'm 55 years old and had a full growth of hair on my scalp till recently. Now the front and back have started thinning. I need to keep a good growth to conceal some burn scars on my forehead. Do you think at this age it might be possible to reduce loss of hair using Propecia or should I go for Minoxil for regrowth? Jane AskDocWeb: It is not common but people have reported growing hair in unwanted places, usually when the product gets on other areas but sometimes even in areas where the product has not been applied. Subj: Ability to perform has decreased Date: 10/26/2007 Hi, I have been using Regaine (5% Minoxidil) for about a year now, although I notice a difference and my hair has stopped falling, I am concerned about my loss in erectile function. My sexual desire has not decreased but my ability to perform and keep it up definitely has. Is this a side effect of Minoxidil? I am considering to switch to Saw Palmetto instead. Will that help? Regards, Manish AskDocWeb: Sexual side effects are a sign that too much Minoxidil is being absorbed into your body through your skin, in other words you are using too much or leaving it on too long. The Saw Palmetto you'll just have to try it. Subj: Female 37 Date: 10/28/2007 Doctor prescribed me mintop 5%(Dr Reddy's). From last two days I have been using it. My falling of hair has stopped. I AM WORRIED ABOUT THE FACIAL HAIR GROWTH. I need to know (1) Is the growth of facial hair is caused because mindoxil lotion for any reason came in contact with the face skin? (2) Or simply it was absorbed by the scalp skin and then it affected the facial skin? (3) Will I be able to understand its side effect within week of using it, or side effect might be observed later? Maria AskDocWeb: Hair growth is usually stimulated only on the skin where the Minoxidil is applied, not on other areas. Side effects are rare but when they do happen are most likely to appear soon after commencing treatment. They can, however, appear at any time. Subj: Planning for pregnancy Date: 10/28/2007 I am 36. Doctor has prescribed me Mintop 5% (Dr Reddy's) for one month. After 6 months I am planning for pregnancy. Should I use mintop for this one month? My scalp looks real bad. Before using this medicine, make sure your doctor knows if you are pregnant or if you plan on becoming pregnant. Subj: Unconclusve results Date: 10/31/2007 I feel lot of information portrayed here by AskDocWeb are not clear and conclusive. For instance one of your comments says - "Minoxidil is a vasodilator" I'm sure a lot of research has been done on minox and there is no conclusive results of how minoxidil works. There are ifs and buts about it being a Vascodilator but not conclusive. Similarly I find a peculiar information of 48 weeks effectiveness of minoxidil which no research has concluded. Of course for some cases it may have happened. But who knows it may work for a life time. So I feel that readers may be misdirected by citing these unconclusve results. The applications of products and the results greatly depends on lot of factors. Rick AskDocWeb: You seem to imply that Minoxidil is not a vasodilator. There are no ifs or buts about the fact that Minoxidil is a vasodilator. If you need proof, just look up Minoxidil on Wikipedia or any medical database. The information about the effectiveness of Minoxidil being limited to 48 weeks comes from the Food and Drug Administration. Here's the quote from Drug Facts from the FDA "Hair regrowth has not been shown to last longer than 48 weeks of continuous treatment in large clinical trials with minoxidil topical solution 5% for men." Subj: Applying Minoxidil Date: 11/3/2007 What if I forget to put on product until around lunchtime, but still leave it on for at least 6 to 10 hours before my second application? Is that OK, or does it absolutely have to go on in the AM? Enzo AskDocWeb: As long as you allow the Minoxidil to completely dry (2-4 hours) you should be okay. Subj: Shedding Date: 11/3/2007 My name is Anirudh and have started losing hair appreciably on the front side of the head. I have started using Mintop 5% and have noticed that my hair started shedding (as expected). My question is, I have developed flaking on the scalp which leads to dandruff, Will this side effect affect my hair? Also, I generally lose around 100 strands of hair in a day and around 150 when I shampoo my hair, Is this rate of fall okay? Anirudh AskDocWeb: The flaking will not affect your hair growth. The normal rate of hair loss is about 100 per day. Subj: I'm slightly confused Date: 11/6/2007 On the one hand, the feedback states that Minoxidil can be applied to anywhere where hair loss is to be treated but on the other hand states that it will not treat a receding hairline. As my primary hairloss is at my hairline, I would appreciate clarification of whether this drug will be of any use. If not, is there anything that would help? Currently there is no product available that we can recommend for results in that area. Subj: Good effect or what? Should I use it? Ali AskDocWeb: The 2% Minoxidil has been shown to stimulate hair growth in about 30% of male patients. That means 3 out of 10 men have hair growth. Also keep in mind that hair growth has not been shown to last beyond 48 weeks. Use it or some other product but it is up to you to make that decision. We are here to keep track of side effects. Subj: Dandruff and flaky scalp Date: 11/20/2007 I had dandruff before starting to use rogaine, and would wash my hair with head and shoulders. I have started using rogaine and was just wondering whether head and shoulders would interfere with the rogaine. Subj: Loss of erection Date: 11/20/2007 I used rogaine and it works but the side effects aren't worth it. I had a loss of erection and I didn't know why but I did some research and found that it was caused by rogaine. I stopped using rogaine it's not worth it if you have a frequent sex life. SCI Subj: Frontal receding hair line Date: 11/24/2007 Hi, would like to ask why rogaine is not suitable for people with frontal receding hair line? I am very concerned. I am afraid that this will affect the baby and cause birth defects. Anki AskDocWeb: Minoxidil will not cause birth defects so you can sleep peacefully. Subj: Propecia, Rogaine and Advecia? Date: 11/27/2007 I am a 65 year old female. My dermatologist has me on 1 mg propecia, I also use Rogaine. Can advecia be taken in conjunction with these products?
