I'm 58, male and have suffered from heartburn/acid reflux since my teens. I was put on Nexium a couple of years ago by my GP and noticed that my short-term memory loss began to deteriorate noticeably after about 2 months. I couldn't remember where I left my keys, when I got in the car I couldn't think where to put the key to start the engine (I drive more than 500km a week on business). It got to the point that I started researching on the web and found that there were reports of neurological damage caused by Nexium. I stopped taking it immediately and after about 2 years I can say that things are now almost back to normal, but not completely. However I will say that the heartburn and reflux situation has also improved markedly, I hope the improvement will be long-term.
AskDocWeb: Several people on this forum have also reported memory problems with Nexium. See the following posts:
Barbara (Foggy mind and fuzzy memory with Nexium)
Veronica (On a roller coaster)
Lavonna (Nexium is killing me)
Ed (Mild lightheadedness and memory issues)
Norma (Statistics for those who are older?)
Peggy (Possible dangers of Nexium)
Duane (Short term memory loss)
It's worth noting that memory loss is not limited to Nexium but also occurs with other PPIs.
More heartburn than when we started
My wife and I have been on and off nexium several times over 10 years time(it's the only thing that works on me). Every time we've gone off, we've both experienced more heart burn and discomfort than when we started, for 3 weeks to a month after. If we didn't find this out, we would think we needed it all the time. Again I've just finished a six month coarse of nexium + three weeks of misery. Now I feel great. Hopefully for several more years.
AskDocWeb: Many people get acid rebound or rebound reflux when discontinuing a PPI. Glad to hear that you figured this out.
What is the maximum dose?
How much is the maxium nexium allowed daily? I'm on 40mg and still having heartburn.
AskDocWeb: The maximum dosage of Nexium depend on your specific diagnosis. Here are the adult daily dosages given for a verity of conditions by the manufacturer:
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): 20 mg to 40 mg
Erosive Esophagitis: Healing: 20 to 40 mg
Erosive Esophagitis: Maintenance of healing: 20 mg
Helicobacter pylori Infection: 40 mg once a day for 10 days along with amoxicillin 1000 mg and clarithromycin 500 mg twice a day for 10 days.
NSAID-Induced Gastric Ulcer: 20 to 40 mg
Liver Dose Adjustments: In patients with severe hepatic insufficiency (Child-Pugh class C) the maximum daily dose is 20 mg.
Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome: 40 mg twice daily. Doses up to 240 mg daily have been used.
Pathological Hypersecretory Conditions: 40 mg twice daily. Doses up to 240 mg daily have been used.
Brok my toe and losing hair
I have been on Nexium for quit a while now. I'm not sure how long, but perhaps a year or so. I started with 40mg, then was able to drop to 20mg. I have stopped taking it because I feel tired all the time. Even though I supplement my diet with a multi vitamin and other things like magnesium, I still feel that I have a nutritional deficiency. I've broken my toe far too easily (I'm 34) and I have noticed my hair thinning faster than normal. I've only recently noticed it, however, so would this be the nexium? IF it is and I stop will it grow back?
AskDocWeb: Hair loss or alopecia is not one of the common side effects of Nexium but MebMD lists it as a "rare" side effect. Most Drug Induced Hair Loss stops when the medication causing it is discontinued and the hair that was lost grows back. However, always check with your doctor before discontinuing any prescription medication, including Nexium.
Severe joint pain
I have been on Nexium for approximately 8 years. It controls my reflux very well. I have been experiencing severe joint pain in both of my shoulders for about 6-8 months and think it may be caused by the Nexium. I took prevacid for 5 years and began to have weakness and pain in my calfs and legs. I stopped the prevacid, and within two weeks the pain and weakness had completely disappeared. Have you heard of anyone else experiencing this type of joint pain?
AskDocWeb: Yes, joint pains (arthralgia) and muscle pains (myalgia) are rare but possible side effects of Nexium. These side effects affect less than 1 in 1,000 patients.
Nausea every day
I am taking (2) 40mg slow release nexium per day, one an hour before breakfast and one an hour before supper. Can this dosage give you nausea every day. I had lung cancer and the cancer was successfully removed, but I take many prescriptions. The nexium and Fentanyl patches where just added to my list.
AskDocWeb: Nausea is a common side effect of Nexium as is constipation, diarrhea, drowsiness, dry mouth, headache, and stomach pain. You may want to try some ginger tea or ask your doctor about an antiemetic medication for relief of nausea.
Memory and thought process
Have been on nexium and azacolon for 3 years to treat colitis. Unfortunately during this time my memory and thought process has got very poor. I also suffer lightheadedness and balance is effected. I am only 43 years old and can not find any other causes. Has anybody else got these symthoms?
AskDocWeb: Nexium is typically not listed among the drug that cause memory loss however, less than one percent do have a this side effect as well as dizziness.
I have been using Nexium for years. I have esophogial ulcers as a result of taking Fozomaz and Boniva. In the last 6 months I have been experiencing "extreme" gas. The Dr. asked me to take Align probiotics (very expensive not covered by insurance) in an attempt to control the gas. At first it worked real good. Now, it hardly works at all. What can I do? I hardly dare to be in the company of others at this point in time.
AskDocWeb: It may be time to consult with an expert. In this case that may be a gastroenterologist, which deals with disorders of the digestive system.
