Bad liver and chemical smell
Date: 1/9/2012
I have used the Nioxin system 3 for 40 days and have noticed that my liver has been really bad since. Moreover, I feel that my skin has this smell of chemical ingredients. Is this product toxic? I have already made an appointment with my doctor - something is not okay.
Denise

AskDocWeb: Please share what your doctor has to say after evaluating your situation.

Major headaches
Date: 1/24/2012
I have currently been using nioxin for 2 days and I have notice that I have major headaches. Should I discontinue using this product???
Chila

AskDocWeb: That would be one way to find out if the product were the cause of the headaches. If the headaches stop and come back when the product is used again, that would tell you.

Scalp treatment?
Date: 1/25/2012
Hi there, does this mean the leave in scalp treatment is okay? It does not apear to contain any of the sulphates in question?? I really like nioxen; my hair is starting to grow back again, but I am worried about it being carcinogenic. Thanks,
Mel

AskDocWeb: According to a Material Safety Data Sheet provided by the manufacturer, Nioxin System Scalp Treatments 2, 4, and 6 do not contain Sodium Laureth. The concern about carcinogenic contaminants in Nioxin products only applies to those products that contain Sodium Laureth.

Headaches, dizziness, and sore neck and shoulders
Date: 2/14/2012
I have been experiencing headaches, dizziness, and my neck and shoulders are sore and stiff. When awaken in the morning I feel terrible. As the day progresses (as long as I don't use the scalp treatment spray) it starts to subside. Will stop using the number 1 treatment plan to see if it subsides. Will not use it again if it clears up with not using it. I have not taken, eaten or changed medications. This is the only change there has been and I am not comfortable with it at all. They may say no side effects, but after reading the above statements and my own experience I think there should be more information for the consumer. No ingredients are even listed on the box or bottles??? A very concerned consumer.
Meredith

pH balance
Date: 2/15/2012
What is the PH balance of Nioxin shampoo's?
Rona

AskDocWeb: Using the search box on their website returned no results so it appears that they do not publish that information.

Extreme migraines
Date: 3/11/2012
My 15 year old daughter has been using nioxin for about four weeks and has been experiencing extreme migraines to the point of hospitalization. I came on this site on a whim as I am desperately trying to find the cause. I NEVER thought there could possibly be a connection!!! We will discontinue using immediately. How is this allowed to be sold without any warning labels!!!
Rebecca

AskDocWeb: Headaches are one of the known side effects of the contaminant 1,4-dioxane. Other possible side effects include drowsiness, vertigo, and anorexia. Human and animal studies identify the liver and kidneys as the target organs for 1,4-dioxane toxicity following short-term exposure to high doses (regardless of the route of exposure). Chronic exposure may result in dermatitis or possible liver and kidney damage.

Source: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Unfortunately the FDA has not established a safe limit for 1,4-dioxane and does not require warning labels for such contaminants.

Viviscal products?
Date: 4/29/2012
What do you know about Viscal or Viviscal products? Alesia

AskDocWeb: It appears that Viviscal is called Nourkrin in the UK & Ireland and Viviscal in the USA where it is not an FDA approved medication. It is a supplement made from a secret, high protein blend of marine origin extracts. When they say it contains a secret ingredient, we always wonder how people are supposed to know if they are allergic to it or not if they don't know what is in it.

Made in Finland, Viviscal contains horsetail extract, also known as Equisetum Arvense. There are reports that the horsetail extract makes some people skin itch.
