Subj: Is this normal?
Hi, I just got off Ortho tri cyclen lo about 7 days now. I started my period again after I just got off on dec. 3. Is this normal and how long before I get back to normal, because me and my husband are trying for a baby. Please get back to me as soon as possible thank you.
AskDocWeb: Yes, it is normal to start a period soon after discontinuing birth control pills. It can take up to three months for your hormones to get back to normal.
Subj: Am I still protected?
I've been on Ortho Tricyclen for about 4 months with no problems, I have been on the sugar pills for a week, and my boyfriend and I have had sexual intercourse a couple times, am I still protected?
AskDocWeb: Yes, you are still protected. There are a few days out of each month when you can't get pregnant because you are not fertile. That is when the sugar pills are taken. They help you maintain the habit of taking a pill at the same time each day.
Can I drink, alcohol, while on the pill?
AskDocWeb: In most cases yes, alcohol has no affect on the effectiveness of the pill. Howeveer, there are a few reports of increased sensitivity to the effects of alcohol when using Ortho Tri-Cyclen.
I have been taking ortho tri cyclen lo for about 5 months now and i was wondering if you took aspirin the day before you had sex without a condom, is there a chance you can get pregnant?
AskDocWeb: Aspirin has no affect on your ability to get pregnant.
Subj: Haven't been taking my pill
I've been taking Ortho Tri-Cyclen for about three months now. I haven't been taking my pill at the right time for about a month now and I've been feeling sick, I feel sick I get light headed all the time dizzy and every time I smell something I feel like am going to vomit. I have pains in my stomach. Is there a chance that I could be pregnant.
AskDocWeb: It depend on what you mean by not taking your pill at the right time, like skipping pills, if so then yes, you could be pregnant.
Subj: Tried many birth control products
I have tried so many birth controls and haven't been happy with one. Ortho Cyclen made me so sick. NuvaRing made my partner uncomfortable because he felt it. The patch made me break out anywhere I placed it. The shot made me spot dark black discharge....I got the shot the day after I had my son so of course I had the afterbirth but to me it never went away. I had my son in August, I spotted blood till November everyday. NO SEX, who would want to?! I'm on Ortho TriCyclen Lo and it sucks even more. I'm moody and pissed off alot and I cry for nothing. I'm sick alot and my hair is falling out alot. There is nothing out there for me. I want something that doesn't break me out, make me sick, make me loose hair, and regulates my periods. THERE IS NO SUCH THING! If you don't want a baby, I guess you have to deal with it.
Subj: Switch to another pill?
I have a 12 year-old that started on Orthotricyclen LO 7 months ago because she was constantly bleeding. She would be on her period for 6 weeks on and a week or so off. The pill has stabilized that so that is good. However, her hair, which has always been very long (waist length) and thick is now showing signs of thinning, especially in the front. If we stopped it will it help or shall we switch to another pill? Concerned about the regulation of her cycle and also heard that hair will fall out even more if birth control is stopped? Help Please. Thanks
AskDocWeb: Unfortunately, hair loss can begin soon after pubertal development starts so stopping or changing pills may or may not help. The following hormonal contraceptives have a significant potential of causing or exacerbating hair loss.
Subj: Used ortho lo for 2 days
My girl friend started ortho lo for two days and then stopped. She stopped because it made her stomach hurt and made her dizzy. The first day not takin the pill she started to bleed bad and its a brown color. She has been bleeding for 5 days heavy now. She had her period right before she started to take the pill.
Subj: I skip pills
Hey I was taking Ortho Tri-cyclen for 2 months now when I started I felt so sick to my stomach throwing up nausea. I skip pills an had un protected sex that was a month ago I haven't had a period yet but I took 2 test an they both were negative.
AskDocWeb: Maybe you were lucky, time will tell. Whenever you skip pills it increases the chances of getting pregnant because it reduces your level of protection.
Subj: Going off OTC
I've been on Ortho Tri-Cyclen (OTC) for 10 years, for birth control and acne benefits. This pill has never been 'exceptional' at clearing my skin, but I'm now 29 and over the past year or so I've noticed that my moderate acne seems to clear up only during the week of the placebo pills. Then, soon after taking the first pill in the pack, my skin breaks out in acne again. Shouldn't it be the opposite? Could this be an indication that OTC is no longer an effective acne treatment for me? I've been considering going off OTC (and off all hormonal birth control altogether), but I'm concerned about having acne worse than ever. If I do go off, I realize I'll need to wait about three months for my body/skin to normalize, but since I've been on the pill for 10 years, I don't know what my 'normal' state is anymore. What's the liklihood that going off OTC will result in worse acne in the long run, given the reversed & cyclical effects I've noted above? Please advise. Thanks.
AskDocWeb: 10 years is a long time to be on the same birth control pill. As you know, the older you get the less likely you are to be bothered by acne. The change in your skin over the past 10 years makes acne much less likely to be a problem. Given your reversal, you may want to talk this over with your doctor.
Subj: Decided to have a baby
I've been on ortho tri-cycle LO for about 12 years now and my husband and I decide to try having a baby now. Wondering if getting off the pill will make me gain weight at all? And if this is a good time to try to conceive? I have 2 weeks left of birth control pills but I don't plan on taking them...should I finish the full cycle before ending it? I want to make sure I'm doing this right and I'm concern that I'll get weight and have acne problems while being off of the pill. Please help.
AskDocWeb: Going off birth control pills typically makes loosing weight easier. That may have something to do with the increase in appetite that some women who take birth control pills have complained about. If you discontinue before the end of the pack, be prepared for a disruption in your cycle that may take a few months to sort out.
Subj: Concerned about weight
I have been on this pill for about 3 weeks now an I have gained over 5 pounds already. I have polysistic overies which is why I am on the pill...looking at these comments I wonder will I be able to lose weight on the pill because I have to be on the pill for a long time.... will I keep gaining weight if I run every day and eat right?
AskDocWeb: Some women gain while others loose weight and there is no way to tell beforehand which will happen to you. In any case you are on the right track by eating right and running every day. That will go a long ways in helping you maintain your desired weight.
Subj: Break through bleeding and weigh gain
I have been on Ortho tri cyclen lo for over a year. I don't get my periods regularly. In fact, I went 5 months recently without a period. It seems that when I do get a period it is always during the third week of the pills. I have experienced break through bleeding and weigh gain. I have also passed black colored blood clots. Should I continue the use of this pill or is this common?
AskDocWeb: Breakthrough bleeding and weight gain are common complaints however, the decision to change pills should be made only after talking it over with your doctor.
Subj: Since I quit my face looks terrible!
I was on these pills for 7 years straight and never had any problems. I don't take them anymore cause my tubes are tied, that has been about 4 years now. Ever since I have quit taken these pills my face looks terrible!!! Even though I have regular 3 day periods and I am fine with that, I will be getting back on them so my face will clear up.
Subj: Extremely moody and unbelievably depressed
I was on Ortho Tri Clyclen Lo for the first time about 4 years ago. I loved it! I lost almost 20 lbs in the first 6 months and after that my weight stabilized and did not return until I discontinued the pill a year later. AS SOON AS I STOPPED TAKING THE PILL I GAINED THE WEIGHT BACK AND THEN SOME. I just began taking it again two weeks ago and hope to see the same weight loss. However, my skin is starting to get bad again. I'm not sure if this is a side effect of the pill though because I have had skin issues for years. I also experienced terrible melancholy in the year I first took the pill and during the first 3-6 mos after I stopped taking it I was extremely moody and unbelievably depressed. I hope these issues do not come back this second go around. I'll keep you updated!
Subj: Hair loss after discontinuing the pill
I took Orthotricyclen from 2002-October 2007. In Aug '08 noticed my hair thinning near the part and at the front. Not enough for most to notice but I noticed it. Dermatologist not overly concerned but did see thinning. Looked back at photos and definitely a difference starting around April 2008. Part was wider at the hairline. Weird thing is, I don't really shed much. No more than the usual 50 hairs/day. If I stopped the pill in Oct '07, shouldn't my hormones have regulated and my hair come back by Jan '09? The front of my scalp itches a bit too but I have absolutely no dandruff and never have had any. Can discontinuing the pill cause hair loss? Ortho is supposed to be a low androgen pill.
AskDocWeb: We haven't hear of that happening but that is not to say that it is impossible. Since hair loss is one of the symptoms of thyroid problems you may want to get that checked when you get your next physical.
