Subj: Bleeding dark brown nasty stuff
Date: 4/27/2009
I am Felecia I'm 16 I have just started taking birth control (ortho tri-cyclen) a couple weeks ago I started my period April 11 and I ended it about the 19th and since then I have been bleeding dark brown nasty stuff...and light bleeding but not much just sometimes please help. Is it bad???

AskDocWeb: Many women report excessively long periods during the first three months of use. Typically when you experiences spotting between cycles it is recommended that you see a gynecologist or nurse practitioner to make sure that the breakthrough bleeding is normal and not a symptom of another problem such as endometriosis, uterine fibroids, cervical cancer, or ovarian cysts. Most of the time it turns out to be harmless but it is safer to check and make sure.

Subj: Ready to try for baby
Date: 4/29/2009
I have been on Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo to regulate my periods since Feb 1st, but me and my fiance are ready to try for baby number two, I am just curious is to how long will it for me to become pregnant if I don't take them on my next period. We want it to kinda happen fast. Please help.

AskDocWeb: It is possible to get pregnant within days of quitting but it is more likely to take several months.

Subj: Extremely moody
Date: 4/30/2009
I have been on ortho lo for 3 months. Since I have been on the pill I cry over nothing and I have been extremley moody. I have never had this problem before so I know that it must be the pills. I have also gained weight and I am bloated really bad. I eat less now than what I did before I got on the pills and fatter that I have ever been.

Subj: My face is breaking out
Date: 5/1/2009
I recently started my first pack of ortho-lo, I'm about half way thru the pack, and out of the blue my face is breaking out like never before, its out of control... is this because of the pill?

AskDocWeb: It may be, several others have reported this side effect with Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo.

Subj: Vaginal odor
Date: 5/2/2009
I've been taking Tri-Nessa for about 3 months. I've noticed the week after my period I have strong vaginal odor. It's like my normal smell just alot stronger and much more noticeable. It goes away after about a week or two. Is this a side effect and will it go away over time. It is making me a bit self conscience.

AskDocWeb: The bad odor might be a side effect of the pill but it can also indicate an infection so talk with your doctor about this.

Subj: Terrible Migraines
Date: 5/6/2009
I had been on Tricyclen for about 7-8 years. I have always had headaches now and then but within the last year or two I have gotten terrible migraines that happen the week of my period and the same time every day and get progressively worse and sometimes nausea. For this reason I decided to go off Tricyclen. After three weeks of migraines, they seemed to have stopped. I have been off for about two months now and I still haven't gotten my period just a little brown spotting for a couple of weeks. My acne has gotten really bad. I had acne before going on tricyclen, but not this bad. It was better while I was on birth control but I still experienced regular break outs. Other symptoms I experienced were breast enlargement (which they have now seemed to have deflated since going off), and low sex drive. I also get an itchy rash now and then on my chest as well. Other than my migranes I did not have any problems for years no depression, and not overly moody.

Subj: It's so amazing
Date: 5/8/2009
I have just started taking Ortho Tri Cyclen, after being on Yasmin for 6 months. Though it's still early on, I feel really great and my skin is soooooo clear. I feel energized and I feel extremely healthy, it's so amazing. Yasmin was really bad, makes you tired, gives you cramps, headaches, pretty much anything that causes pain and fatigue. I am so glad to be finally off that stuff, Ortho is awesome, Yasmin is dangerous!

Subj: Trouble catching breath and heart starts to get tight
Date: 5/8/2009
I am a 21 year old girl, I weigh 137 pounds and I'm 5"4.5. I have been taking 10 mg for a good month, one pill everyday. I recently start having trouble catching my breath and my heart starts to get tight while I work out. Any advice?

AskDocWeb: Please discuss this with your health care provider.

Subj: Placebos
Date: 5/9/2009
I have been on Ortho Lo for about a year (I'm 26, and have taken Ortho and Ortho-Lo on and off since I was about 16), with few complications. Recently, my cycle has become very erratic. I will start at different times each month, usually before I get to the placebos. It will sometimes be brown and have a strong smell And 6 days ago (14 days since my last period), I started bleeding steadily (bright red, no brown, no smell) and had horrible cramps and fatigue. I've continued taking my pills regularly, but I'm 3 days from my placebos and nervous about what to do. My question is should I continue through my placebos as though my cycle has been normal, or should I start a new cycle of pills and treat this as my period? I'm nervous about taking the placebos because I definitely don't want to get pregnant!

AskDocWeb: The placebos are taken during the phase of your cycle when you are not fertile and can not get pregnant. We suggest you talk to your doctor before skipping any pills.

Subj: Stressed out
Date: 5/11/2009
I took Ortho-tri-cyclen lo for 7 months. I got my period regularly the last two months; however, I am 2 week late this month. I took 2 preg exams and they both say negative. I have been stressed out this entire month since I got a new job and I'm moving into another apartment. I feel normal. Could this have to do with my hormones?

AskDocWeb: Yes it could but it could also be caused by stress. Getting a new job is stressful enough to cause this by itself. Moving to a new apartment is also stressful enough to cause this. Add the two forms of stress together and it would be no surprise is you didn't have a period this month. However, you don't have one next month then check with your doctor.

Subj: Is this too ramdom?
Date: 5/11/2009
This is a question concerning ortho tri-cyclen. I know the package says to start on either the first day of my period or the Sunday directly after my period. I am wondering if it's possible to simply start on a Sunday in the middle of the month. I want to start as soon as possible but I finished my last period two weeks ago so this coming Sunday would not be the Sunday directly after my period. Is this too "random" of a time to begin? (Note: I have taken BC pills in the past, it is not my first time using them but I haven't used them in the past couple months and I want to start again.)

AskDocWeb: In order for your birth control pills to be effective, you have to follow the instructions. Starting in the middle of your cycle would cause a number of problems that you would only regret later.

Subj: No zero promblems
Date: 5/12/2009
I am taking it and I have no zero promblems. Everyone on here sounds like a big whiney baby. Sorry.

Subj: My periods got worse
Date: 5/13/2009
I'm using orthotrcyclyn lo orange for fibroids I've taken them twice so far and am now upon my third pack. At first my mood was so down I exploded in anger at the slightest provocation. I could hear the change in my voice kinda like the she-hulk. My periods got worse longer yet not as heavy and the clots were smaller. I still had unbearable back pain that shot down to my legs and super swollen feet. My face swelled up I had hot flashes that left me sweaty. Now in the third month I have those horrid painful stinging knots in my armpits clusters of them. My periods last 2 1/2 weeks at a time, really not good, no employer will ever be that understanding. They come very close a week apart perhaps I may not be taking them properly... any comments?

AskDocWeb: If no employer will put up with all that, why should you put up with it? Seriously, talk to your doctor about what can be done.

Subj: Easier just to not have sex
Date: 5/14/2009
I have been taking ortho tri cyclen for a month now and my boobs are so sore and I moved from a b cup to a c cup. I'm always so ill and I feel like I could eat everything in sight! My stomach is always bloated and my face didn't clear up which is one of the main reasons I put myself on it. It just seems to me that it would be easier just to not have sex period.

Subj: We broke a condom
Date: 5/15/2009
I had been on ortho-tri cyclen for about 2 months. My husband and I just got married 2 weeks ago. While on our honeymoon we broke a condom, now I am scared that I am going to prego. Help!

AskDocWeb: If you have been taking your birth control pills every day and haven't missed any then you can relax. After the first seven days, the back-up form of birth control is not required unless you miss pills or have to take an antibiotic. And congratulations!

Subj: Bleeding after a miscarriage
Date: 5/18/2009
I had a miscarriage about 6 weeks ago and my doctor put me on trinessa, the first week I had upset stomach but after that I was fine. When I got to the 3rd week of the packet I started my period and I have now been bleeding for over a week. I just started the green pills last night, so is that normal? I'm kinda worried because it's very heavy but then I think about the fact I did lose a baby not very long ago and my body is still outa wack...

AskDocWeb: Some variation is to be expected when starting a new pill but check with your health care provider because, as you say, you just had the miscarriage.

Subj: Sex results in bleeding
Date: 5/18/2009
I was on Ortho tri cyclene for 10 years without a problem. I got off of it for about a year and a half to give my body a break. I have been on Lo for about a month in a half. My boyfriend lives in a different state so I don't have sex on a regular basis, but both times I have seen him since I have gotten back on the pill we have had sex and I will start bleeding at least one of the times. He is a bit bigger than I am used to. Could the bleeding be due to his size or the new pill I am on. Should I switch back to Ortho Tri Cyclene? The bleeding is a bit scary to both of us and would like to resolve this ASAP. I should mention that I have also been known to have some pain during certain positions, but not with my current boyfriend and have also had a leep procedure, but this was 7 years ago and have had normal pap smears since. What could be causing the bleeding and what can I do about it?

AskDocWeb: Nothing can spoil your mood faster than vaginal bleeding after sex. Post-coital bleeding can occur for a number of reasons, and it is not to be taken lightly. If you have eliminated the obvious causes, like making sure your fingernails are trimmed and you're not on your period, bleeding during sex may be a symptom of a greater problem. Here's a list of the most frequent causes of vaginal bleeding after sex:
  • Lack of lubrication
  • Chlamydia, a bacterial infection that is typically transmitted through sexual activity or contact with semen, vaginal fluid, or blood
  • Precancerous changes of the epithelial cells that line the cervix
  • Gonorrhea
  • Vaginal yeast infection
  • Inflammation or swelling and infection of the vagina or cervix (Vaginitis)
  • Trichomoniasis, a disease caused by protozoan
  • Endometritis is an inflammation of the innermost layer of the uterus
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Uterine polyps occur when the endometrium overgrows causing protrusions into the uterus
  • Uterine fibroids or fibroid tumors
  • Cervical polyps
  • Cervical ectropion, a condition in which the cervical tissue is more susceptible to abrasion.
  • Cancer of the cervix, uterus or vagina.
Anytime you experience post-coital bleeding or vaginal bleeding after sex, consult with your gynecologist. The only time bleeding during or after sex is considered normal is if you are having sexual intercourse for the first time or during menstruation. The sooner you take care of this problem, the smaller your risks.
