Subj: OTC-lo side effect
I took OTC-lo for a year. My doc recommended lo because it has the least amount of side effects or something. I can't imagine what a higher dose would do! I became a completely different person emotionally, was gaining weight and having serious pains in my legs which kept me awake all night plus much more. I felt like I was living in a haze or half-asleep half-awake state. I quit 2 weeks ago and I feel fantastic!!! I "woke up" and am extremely happy and not emotional at all. I have my normal life back. I am NEVER, EVER going to rely on or take BC meds again. Too many risks Vs rewards...and we wonder why so many people are developing cancer in our society.
Subj: Sleep problems
I've been on othro tri cyclen lo for 1.5 months and feel extremely fatigued even though I'm getting a good 8-9 hours of sleep. Is this a common side effect?
AskDocWeb: No, it isn't. Think about the quality of your sleep. If your sleep is being interrupted, your body will want to sleep longer in order to get fully rested. You might want to get checked for sleep apnea.
Subj: Taking pills
Hi, I was wondering when do I start my second pack of pills...I only started taking the pill 2 days ago, but I know (from past experience) that the pill does make your periods irregular in the beginning...SO, do I just take my pills until I run out and start a new pack or do I start my second pack on the first day of my period next month...I am confused!??
AskDocWeb: Take your pills as directed by your doctor; when you finish one pack, immediately start another.
Subj: Severe acne
Hi, I am just starting my Fourth week of Ortho Tricyclen. My doctor prescribed it to me to make my acne better, but eve since I started taking it I have HUGE cystic like acne on my cheeks temples and chin. I even had one so bad on my lip line it made my whole bottom lip swell up so much I couldn't go out in public or barely talk. The doctor said you have to wait a while to see improvements. Do you really have to get worse before you see any improvements? Please help, this is making me so depressed, I'm a naturally pretty girl and this is killing me, I don't feel the slight bit beautiful anymore.
AskDocWeb: This may be awful but it will get better. And yes, your doctor is correct in his statement but he is talking about months. You may need something specifically for severe acne such as Retin-A. Even with that product the skin gets worse before it gets better but it works in weeks rather than months.
Subj: Horrible headaches
I stopped taking ortho-tri-cyclen-lo about 2 months ago b/c it was causing me horrible headaches well since I stopped I haven't had a period. Went to the doctor last month, she said everything was fine and I should resume schedule this month but I haven't. Has this happened to anyone else???
AskDocWeb: Yes, it can and has happened to others.
I took ortho-cyclen for 12 years and recently quit. The first two weeks were ok, then I started having severe anxiety attacks, couldn't sleep, bleeding whenever, itchy, crawly skin, depression and many other "menopausal" symptoms. Could you tell me if this is from quitting the pill after so long and will this all go away with time?
AskDocWeb: The itchy, crawly skin, unable to sleep and anxiety attacks are not listed as withdrawal symptoms from discontinuing the birth control pill. However, there are a few reports from others who have similar experiences. Please visit your doctor and let us know how long this lasts. Are you old enough that it could be menopause?
Subj: Going to the bathroom a lot
I finished up my period about 4 days ago and have not started the next set of pills. I was suppose to start the next pack 3 days ago yet I have had major family problems and couldn't pick up the prescription. For the past two days I have been going to the bathroom a lot more than I ever have, pee, and when I urinate I get a very bad cramp kind of feeling in my lower stomach area. What could that be from?... the pill or coincidence?
Coming off of BC
AskDocWeb: It sounds like you may have a urinary tract infection. Your doctor can resolve this problem with an antibiotic.
Subj: Hives from BCP?
I was on ortho tri cyclen for 4 years then switched to the depo shot for two years. I am back on ortho and at the end off my first pack I have broke out in hives. I have never been allergic to anything I know of...is this the cause?
AskDocWeb: Yes, it could be but hives can be cause by many things. Think back over the past two weeks on whether or not you have been using anything new, or any medications that may of caused this.
Subj: Very light periods
I was wondering if ortho-tricyclen makes your periods shorter. Mine only last 2 days and are very light. Also I've been on it for 6 months and my first 2 months were normal periods then a long one(12 days) and now for the last 2 months they've been short. What's going on??
AskDocWeb: Just to be sure do a home pregnancy test. Missing a pill can cause such affects. Since you have been on the pill for 6 months and have had a change only in the last two it would be a good idea to check with your doctor about this.
Subj: Taking three at a time?
I've been on ortho lo for almost 3 years. I haven't had sex in two months, so I became lax with the pill and on a few occasions I forgot to take it two days in a row. I would then remember on the third day and take three at a time. Ever since these mistakes, I have been getting my period almost every two weeks, this is the second time this has happened. The period lasts for almost two weeks and goes from very light to heavy on different days. What should I do, continue to take it and wait it out?
AskDocWeb: Your period is likely to be irregular for up to three months because of doing that. Taking three at a time is a mistake, ask your doctor. If you miss pills for two days and remember on the third day, another form of contraception is recommended until you are sure you haven't missed a pill for three weeks.
Subj: LOVE Ortho-tri cyclen
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Ortho-tri cyclen (regular-generic...tri-sprintec). I never noticed a difference between the name brand and the generic, other than a big cost savings. However, just today, my doctor gave me samples of Ortho-tri cyclene lo, and frankly after reading comments from a couple different sites, I'm scared! I probably won't switch over, unless I can read some positives to switching.
Subj: Back on ortho
I was also on the shot for 3 yrs. I experienced everything everyone said. The only thing I haven't heard anyone say is the thinning of the bones. I got off of the shot because of this, not enough calcium. I'm now back on the ortho. I'm experiencing nausea, tenderness of the breast, mainly the nipples, anxiety, and rapid heartbeat.
Subj: Birth control for acne
My doctor has recommended I start taking birth control to try and control breakouts I seem to be having. She reccommended yasmine and ortho tri cyclen. I told her about the lo version and she has given me a sample of ortho tri cyclen lo. I just wanted to know what your opinions were on which version is better for acne. Ortho tri cyclen or Ortho tri cyclen lo.
AskDocWeb: The one that works for acne is Ortho Tri-cyclen.
Subj: Period didn't stop
I just started taking ortho tri cyclen. I am just about finished with my first pack and started the pill on the first day of my period. Just one problem, my period hasn't gone away! Is there a problem or is this normal?
AskDocWeb: This is normal. It's just your body getting used to the birth control drug. Irregular mensis can occur in the first three months of use. If it doesn't become regular after that, consult with your physician.
Subj: No period
I recently stopped taking birth control after 5 years of use (first 3, Ortho Tri-Cyclen, last two have been its generic form). 6 weeks later, I have still not had a period. 4 negative pregnancy tests (exp dates in 2008, so they are definitely still good). I have had some strange symptoms, like hard sore nipples for a week--now gone--and excessive wet discharge for two weeks--also now mostly gone. I realize it could take 3 months or so for my cycle to be normal again (~33 days for me) but two weeks late is beginning to concern me, especially with the 4 negatives. Is this not all that unusual, or should I call my doctor?
AskDocWeb: It's not all that unusual but if things aren't right at the end of 90 days then consult with your physician.
Subj: Acne is worse
I started taking tri-sprintec about 2 months ago. It has seemed to make my acne worse... is there any chance that my body will adjust and the breakouts will stop?
Tri Sprintec user
AskDocWeb: The generic birth control pills that are out now do not seem to help with acne. You will have to find something else for that.
Subj: Five days late
Hello. I have been taking Ortho Tri-cyclen for about a year now. I have been on and off it three times because of relationship reasons, and I started my third time taking it about two weeks ago. I started taking it two weeks after I had gotten my period, and now I am five days late compared to last month getting my period. Is this normal?
AskDocWeb: It sounds like you didn't follow directions when you started. Please contact your doctor about this. Your doctor will explain how to start and use your birth control.
Subj: Anxiety and depression with Ortho Tri-cyclen lo
Hi, I've been on Ortho tri cyclen lo for three months and have started to experience anxiety and a little bit of depression, my face is also breaking out drastically. Is this a result of the birth control?
AskDocWeb: Others have reported that Ortho Tri-cyclen lo does not help with acne. Anxiety is not a listed side effect however there is a caution note about depression. Women who have a history of depression may not be able to safely take this drug if their depression becomes serious. If your depression is keeping you from taking care of yourself or those for whom you are responsible then talk to your doctor about an alternative.
