Subj: Allergic to Propecia?
I have used Propecia for about one year with mixed results. However, I think it might have slowed my hair loss. About four months ago I started getting rashes in different places over my body. The rashes would go away with allergy medicine (Claritin). The doctors are telling me that allergy drugs would not cover up a real medicine allergy so they think it is not the Propecia. The question I'm trying to resolve is, am I allergic to Propecia or not. Any advice?
AskDocWeb: You can find out for sure by visiting an allergist and have them test for it.
Subj: 22 year male
I am 22yr male and till now I have great long hairs. However both my father and grandfather became bald before 25. Should I go for propecia or any such product to prevent hair loss? Please suggest.
AskDocWeb: We suggest you visit a dermatologist at the first sign of hair loss and follow their recommendation based on your condition at that time.
I am experiencing early thinning at the crown and top of my head. I'm considering using Propecia but have my concerns. Also I'm confused because in one of your responses you suggest Propecia will work well to another who has the same concerns and his odds are greatly in his favor that he will NOT experience side effects. However in another response you state you do not recommend Propecia because of the possible side effects. Should I use this drug or not? Thanks,
AskDocWeb: Propecia does work for the majority of men and most men don't have side effects (according to the manufacturer). That does not mean that it works well enough for us to recommend its use. Once you know what the side effects are, we think that the decision to use it or not should be made by the patient after consulting with a dermatologist.
Subj: Should I stop taking Propecia?
I've been taking Propecia for 8.5 years with great results. My wife and I want to have a baby now. Should I stop taking it? For how long? If I stop, will I be able to regain that lost hair once I go back on Propecia or will I have lost it forever? Please help!
AskDocWeb: Our concern is that you know the dangers and possible side effects so that you can make an informed decision about taking this drug. If you stop taking it and start again, you take your chances with recovering the lost hair, there doesn't seem to be any statistics available covering that. It you feel generous, do share how your experience works out.
Subj: Propecia side effects
All these feedbacks are making me think twice... I certainly do not want to lose or give up my sex life or lose semen/ejaculation levels. I am not taking it yet. I consulted my doctor and prescribed propecia. The only thing I am confident about are the percentages of people having side effects are very low. If I do begin this regimen and find having these side effects, will it correct itself "over time" or "after stop taking it"? Thank You,
AskDocWeb: According to the manufacturer side effects go away in men who stop taking Propecia.
Subj: Sex during pregnancy with Propecia
Hello, I recently started taking propecia and my wife and I are expecting a baby. She is 4 months along and I was concerned if this drug can effect my sperm causing birth defects or can if effect a baby in the womb after having sex? I understand it can cause problems if she comes in contact with the pill, but what about conceiving a child while on the drug or intercourse during pregnancy? Thanks
AskDocWeb: So far there is only one report of problems caused by conceiving a child or having intercourse during pregnancy when the man is taking Propecia. See the post from Elizabeth.
Subj: Recurrent sore throats
I have been on propecia for approximately 1 year for male pattern baldness. For the past 6 months I have been having recurrent sore throats, have been to the doctor multiple times and nothing seems to be wrong. I am wondering if my use of propecia could have this effect. Perhaps my dosage is too high?
AskDocWeb: Although it is not on the "official" list of side effects several men have reported a problem with sore throats.
Subj: Propecia & PSA count
I'm scheduled for a PSA blood test & also have been taking Propecia. How long should I stop Propecia prior to my blood test?
AskDocWeb: Getting a PSA test doesn't seem to be a reason to discontinue taking it. Just be sure to tell them that you are taking the Propecia so that they can take that into account.
Subj: Minoxidil after Propecia?
Hi! I am a 33 year old male. I have been taking minoxidal for about 13 years now. I have noticed more of a thinning of my crown area. I would like to take Propecia for a year, in conjunction with my minoxidal. If I was to stop the Propecia after a year, and still use the minoxidal, would I be able to hold onto my newly grown hair from the Propecia with the use of this minoxidal? Thanks!!!
AskDocWeb: We would expect rapid hair loss to begin within one year after stopping the Propecia.
I am 25 years old I am using finax 1mg, the Indian version of propecia. I am using it since 6 months but had a break off for one month after the 4th month as I could not find them in market. Then again in 6th month I started using it. Does it mean that that the first 4 months development is shelved. And I didn't come across any noticeable side effects but heard about various sexual side effects. I masturbate almost every day. Is there anything that if you constantly have sexual action you are less likely to see the side effects? In future do I see any side effects at the time of having baby. Are my offspring prone to have any defects? Thanks,
AskDocWeb: There is no relationship between the amount of sexual action you have and the number or severity of any side effects of Propecia. On the other hand, we have no information on the quality or side effects of drugs manufactured outside of the USA. You would need to contact a doctor in your country to find out if there are any problems with Finax.
Subj: Dividing Proscar
I usually buy proscar (5 mg) and then divide it randomly with my teeth into 3-4 pieces, is it OK? will it be effective if it is exposed to light?
AskDocWeb: Breaking the pills is not recommended. It exposes the contents which, if it comes in contact with a pregnant woman, could cause a birth defect. Light is not listed as a concern but heat above 86 degrees F (30C) causes the pills to loose potency.
Subj: Dangerous for a woman to swallow semen?
hi, I was wondering if propecia is a dangerous to a woman (pregnant or not) who swallows semen from a man using propecia? and how long it would take the propecia to get out of her system? I know similar questions about this have been asked but I just want to make sure for this specific example. cheers.
AskDocWeb: No such danger has been reported by the manufacturer.
Subj: Serious sexual side effects
I tried propecia for 6 weeks and quit after having serious sexual side effects. It's been 4 years since I took it and got off it and still cant have a proper erection. I have testicular and groin pain, took 20+ pounds of weight around my waist despite being a professional sprinter and generally my life is been messed up. Thanks Merck and thanks Propecia. I would suggest Merck to work on trying to find an antidote now because despite all my efforts to get back to my normal sexual life its impossible since it has altered something genetically in me and I can say that for sure. All my hormonal patterns have changed drastically and are still changing in a way that I cannot understand. What to say after this, just thanks.
Subj: Propecia side effects
The first time I took propecia was 1.5 years ago just after my first hair transplant which I done to the front of my scalp which has come up well. I was told that propecia will hold the hair in the middle of the head and the crown region. I haven't noticed much change after 1.5 years. The only changes I've noticed were a substantial decrease in libido, low sperm count erectile dysfunction, urinating frequently and ANXIETY.
Not until I stopped taking propecia 12 days ago, I noticed my mood swings and anxiety had gone. I always (thought) that it was in my head and didn't realize it was the propecia. My manhood has slightly improved since I now wake up in the mornings and notice its up on its own. My libido hasn't improved much yet and when I have sex I can get it up but doesn't stay hard as long as it used to but my sperm count has gone back to normal. I guess I have to wait a few more months at least before my libido gets back to normal. I've thrown away half my packet of propecia and won't be touching that crap again.
I've read on this web site with the people that have had no side effects that the 1.8% is justified because they don't share their experiences. I don't believe in their figures, just imagine how many other guys are out there that have similar problems to ours and don't share it with us for many reasons such as not having a computer, don't come on theses sites or any other reason.
One more thing is what's the point of going on this drug and risking your health if you're going to develop a tolerance to it and eventually lose your hair anyway. I'm very happy with my first transplant and now looking at getting another to cover my mid scalp and crown where I don't have to worry about taking anything...Especially PROPECIA.
