Subj: Vocal difficulty
I started taking Propecia in February of 2009. I am a vocal professional with high demands on my voice. I started having some vocal difficulty around May 2009 and decided to see an ENT. A stroboscopy was eventually done to ensure no damage to the vocal cords. Meanwhile, my vocal condition drastically worsened through the summer months. When it was discovered that my vocal cords and surrounding area were in perfect condition, I started looking for the culprit. I have decided to stop taking Propecia and have done so as of mid-September 2009. I read an article recently about how harmonal changes can severely affect the voice. I hope this solves the problem; will keep you posted,
Subj: Ruin your life
Propecia, Proscar, Finasteride will ruin your life. You will never be the same, and you will cease being a sexual being once you take it.
AskDocWeb: How do you know that? People would be more likely to take you seriously if your message were from first hand experience.
Subj: It's not working
I used propecia for a month, on and off every time I used it, it works great my hair grow and got thick wear it was very noticeable. But my pills ran out and my doctor didn't want to proscribe them to me any more. He says he doesn't feel there safe in a long run. Well I ordered more pills but in the 2 week I didn't have pills, all my hair starting falling, I'm back on the med. but it seems like its not working any more. By the way was taking a half pill, now I'm taking 1 pill but no results its raining hair. Any advise, mild side effects earlier when it was working now there no side effects but it's not working.
AskDocWeb: It is not likely to start working right away. Propecia can take several months for the affects to build up.
Subj: ED like symptoms progressively getting worse
I've been using Propecia over the past 10+ years (I'm now 36). I've never noticed any side effects while using this drug and I've been extremely pleased with the outcome (except for the recent increase in price); however, over the past 3 months I've been having ED like symptoms (progressively getting worse). I realize that anything is possible, but how likely is it that Propecia is now causing me these issues after 10+ years? I fear that if I go to the doctor, they'll tell me to stop using the drug, but what if it's not the issue. I don't want to lose what I've maintained and find out it's not the source of the problem. Can other causes of ED be detected without having to stop Propecia? And, as I asked earlier, could I be experiencing side effects now after 10 years of use?
AskDocWeb: Side effects can appear after months or even years of trouble-free use. However, it is possible to check for other causes of the ED while still taking the Propecia.
Subj: I would rather be bald
I've been taking propecia for about 4 years now. It definitely worked with hair regrowth but I have been having some serious sexual side effects. I didn't even think it was related to propecia until I went to my doctor today and he told me it was the propecia causing my issues. I just thought it was me hitting my mid 30s. My penis doesn't get nearly as hard as it used to, I have lost considerable length and girth in erect state and I have decreased libido. Also for the last 7 months I started taking the generic Finpecia that I got from a Canadian pharmacy and I have noticed my hair starting to thin. So anyone that is going to take Propecia, it does work but don't take the generic and if you notice any sexual side effects whatsoever stop taking it. Today was my last pill I will ever take. I don't want to lose my hair but I would rather be bald than have a shrunken penis. I'm just hoping that my side effects are not permanent. I have researched on some other message boards and there are many people still having problems after being off the propecia for years.
Subj: Shedding after stopping Propecia
Finally had enough of the side effects associated with Propecia and ordered Procerin. Is there any truth to the "shedding" as claimed by previous posters when taking this product? Will I lose the growth gained over the past 6 years while using Propecia?
AskDocWeb: In our informal study of Procerin, 18% of the men reported going through a period of shedding, that's less than 1 in 5. In the clinical trials of Propecia, every man who discontinued use of Propecia lost their new hair growth within months of stopping. We doubt that there is anything you can do to prevent that.
Subj: Hair falling out rapidly
I have been taking Propecia now for a little over a year and a half. My hair loss seemed to stop and I even noticed my hair thickening. Unfortunately for the last two months my hair has been falling out quite rapidly. If I wet my hand and run it through my hair I can easily find 5 to 15 hairs stuck to my hand. When I rub my hair over the counter numerous hairs fall on the surface. I am noticing my hair beginning to thin again. What could be the possible reasons for this?
AskDocWeb: It does sound like the Propecia stopped working. We can only speculate about possible reasons for this. Keep in mind that the following are only guesses. 1. Your body may have built up a tolerance for the drug. 2. You changed the shampoo or conditioner that you use to one that causes hair loss. 3. The original cause of your hair loss may have increased beyond the ability of Propecia to counter it. This includes things like your stress level and bad eating habits (vitamin deficiency). If your hair loss is caused by a medical condition such as a thyroid problem, that condition may be degenerating or getting worse.
I have been taking Prepecia for 4 year until 1 year ago and I noticed significant hair loss. Now, I'm wondering if I switch back to Propecia again, it can help for re-growth of my lost hair? Also is there any risk associated with switch back to Propecia?
AskDocWeb: The risk of switching back is the same as taking it the first time. What made you stop using it before?
Subj: Testicular pain
Hello, I am 26 years old and recently starting taking Propecia. After about two weeks of taking it I noticed a slight pain in testicles. It was during a Saturday - I didnt take it on Sunday. Monday I called the dermitoligist who percsibed it to me and he said he never heard of it. I didnt take it for a week and the pain went away. I called my Dr. to ask if its OK to start taking it, he told me to wait a month. My question is, has anyone ever had minor testicular pain when starting propecia? Did you stop taking it? Did the pain come back after waiting a while and taking it again? Does the pain go away even if you dont stop taking propecia? Thank you for any help you can give me
AskDocWeb: There are several reports of testicular pain but none of them reported on what happens when starting up again. Cyrus reported his testicular pain still continues 9 months after discontinuing Propecia.
Subj: Propecia for women?
Hi, I'm past my child bearing age and my alopecia began after I had my second child, for which my endocrinologist prescribed Propecia, but everything I've read indicates that this medication is not recommended for women. It has reduced my hair loss be can it have other negative side effects on women? Thank you.
AskDocWeb: The primary reason that Propecia is not recommend for women has to do with the possibility of birth defects. Although you don't have that possibility, a study involving 137 postmenopausal women showed no benefit from using Propecia. On the other hand, a couple of women have posted here that they are getting good results with it. Neither reported any negative side effects but more feedback would be helpful.
Subj: Painful testicles than went away
Propecia has worked great for me. Side effects for the first week like painful testicles than went away. My hair is growing back fast and it's been less than 6 months. Some of these negative posts could be exagerrated and you never know if people are taking proper doses or other medication or have psychological issues. It Works if you're young and still have hair. My sex drive is also much better, I last a lot longer than before
Subj: Is there a chance?
Is there a chance that propecia will help me REGROW hair and make my hair be THICK and should do minoxidil also?
AskDocWeb: Yes, there is a good chance that Propecia will help you regrow hair but there is no way of knowing how thick it will be. Using minoxidil is not recommended when using Propecia.
Subj: Skin problems
After 5 months of taking propecia I started having alot of skin problems, first rash on my genitals, then lesions all over my back and scalp and rash under arms. Doctors told me it wasnt propecia so I kept taking it, 3 years on I ceased taking proscar because I couldnt handle the skin problems. Its been 4 months now and still no improvement. I've tried everything. Betnovate works but it always returns in 3 or 4 days, What can I do.
AskDocWeb: Since it is a skin problem it sounds like you need the help of a dermatologist.
Subj: Female hormone?
I just started taking the product. My doctor said it is made from a female hormone. I gained 4 pounds in a few days while eating less and running every morning. Is it possible due to the female hormone?
AskDocWeb: Humm, that is a new one. You may want to check with your doctor to find out if he was joking or talking about a different drug. We were unable to find out what Propecia (finasteride) is made from but we doubt if it is female hormones.
Subj: Almost no muscle recovery
I've been on Propecia for almost 5 years with great results. ... For about a year I have been cutting my pills in half and haven't seen any negative result. So I am saving half the cost. I do have concerns about loss of muscle over the past few years and frequent fatique. I have almost no muscle recovery after workouts or after a days worth of yard work. It takes me a few days to recover. I've often wondered if it could be because of the Propecia. I hope not because I'd hate to have to give it up.
