Sexual side effects
I've been off propecia for about 2 weeks now, and I'm experiencing some sexual side effects, is this normal and how long could the side effects last.
AskDocWeb: Experiencing sexual side effects after discontinuing certainly is not typical but it is possible. Unfortunately there is no way to know how long it might last. If it persists then you may want to consult with an urologist.
Swollen and red nose
I have had an adverse drug reaction same as the comment above of swollen and red nose; resolves on stopping finasteride treatment and initiates on resuming treatment. I do not drink alcohol. This needs to be reported to marketing authorisation holder/'DNA holder. Please ensure this is done...without alternative aetiology of drinking gin! (Please!)
Make sure if you evaluating propecia for the first time to make sure your using an American purchased product at least initially. Generic finasteride bought from foreign online stores is cheaper but you may not be getting the real thing. I wont use Rogaine because I hear of about a shock period where you loose some hair first before the new grows back. I have used Propecia American purchased for many years and while it is not perfect I noticed more filling in around the crown area at least enough to remove the harsh horse shoe effect. No side effects other than sex drive up because confidence is up.
Be warned, this drug can not only ruin your sex life, but it can cause deep depression, anxiety, mood disorders, cognitive decline, blurred vision, male breasts and more. I took it for 4 years and it's been 3 years since I quit taking it. I still suffer from Post Finasteride Syndrome as are many other men. Check out (websites deleted).

Does Propecia reduce metabolism?
I'm 16 and I suffer from male patten hair loss, as what the dermatologist said, and got prescribed with 1mg propecia. I'm pretty much forced to taking it anyway since my mom is crazy about this problem, but does propecia reduce metabolism, as in calories burned, and is this reversible? Is there anything else that could happen and are they reversible too?
AskDocWeb: When you read about Propecia's ability to affect the metabolism of testosterone, they are talking about your body's ability to convert testosterone into DHT. That is a very small part of your overall metabolism. It has nothing to do with the processing of calories and neither increases nor decreases the amount calories burned.

The doctor has not warned me about any side effects while prescribing me this tablet. What shall i do now? And whom to contact and please suggest me what to do...
AskDocWeb: In India, it appears that you have the Consumer Protection Act of 1986. Under this law you can file a complaint with a simple paper form without paying any court fees. Your complaint will be decided by the Presiding Officer of the District Level. If that doesn't satisfy you, you can appeal to the State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commissions and after that to the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC).
Propecia and liver function
Hello, I am a male, age 37, who was diagnosed with Stage 4 cirrhosis in September of last year due to years of heavy alcohol abuse. I immeditately quit drinking and have made something of a miraculous recovery, all things considered. I am currently only taking multi-vitamins, folic acid and Furosemide (40 mg, to avoid edema). I was on Prednisone for about 3 or 4 months and began noticing hair loss on the top of head and my hairline receeded. I assume this is a combination of my age, my condition and the treatment itself (specifically the Prednisone).
Now that I am doing better, my doctors said it would be ok to start using Rogaine 5 mg, which I have been for the past month. My question: would Propecia be something that may be dangerous to my liver function? This is probably a dumb question coming from someone with cirrhosis, but I continue to get varying opinions (even from my own doctors...). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much for your time.
AskDocWeb: Most websites quote the manufacturer by saying, "Caution should be exercised in the administration of PROPECIA in those patients with liver function abnormalities, as finasteride is metabolized extensively in the liver." Unfortunately they do not go on to explain what that might mean so we'll give it a try.
You already know that Propecia is broken down by the liver. A decrease in liver function will reduce the rate at which the drug is metabolized. If you continue to take the standard dosage, over time the serum levels may rise higher and higher because of the body's inability to clear the drug from your system. This may increase the risk of side effects (speculation).
One problem in getting a clear answer on this is that there are no studies on the effects of hepatic insufficiency for the pharmacokinetics of Propecia. A search of the medical literature turned up only one article (Shimazaki and Nose) that showed a rise in liver enzymes in one of 14 subjects studied in healthy volunteers . One case of hepatitis induced by Finasteride was reported in a patient with many organ problems including a high alcohol intake. The inability to find another cause for the hepatitis on this patient led doctors to believe that this drug may have been the cause of the liver disease on that one patient. When the drug Finasteride has been used with Flutamide, there was some impact possibly inducing liver disease.
Although liver disease in healthy people has not been reported, we would suggest that if you have liver disease, that you use this drug with caution and have a doctor follow your liver function tests periodically.
