Is saw palmetto ok for woment to take?
AskDocWeb: Saw palmetto is appears to be safe for most people but there are some drug/herb interactions that you should be aware of before using it.
Significant premature balding
Hello, my name is Chris. I just turned 25 and I am very bald. I had a noticeable receding hairline by the time I was 18 and a likewise bald spot by the time I was 19. I starting completely shaving my head when I was 20 and have been doing so for the past 5 years. At present my crown has a miniscule amount of peach fuzz on it (which I don't have to shave), with a wide bald line connecting the bald spot on the back of my head. While posting this I measured the diameter of my bald spot and it is now about 4'' in diameter. My brother is 20 years old and has a similar receding hair line on his crown and a small bald spot in the back of his head however his balding is not as advanced as mine. I don't think I've EVER seen anyone with premature balding this significant so early in their lives. I'd would greatly appreciate any well informed feedback or advice regarding mine and my brothers condition.
AskDocWeb: You have probably already figured out that your condition is likely to be hereditary. Other than learning to live with it, the only remedy we see in such a situation is hair transplantation. That is, if you have healthy hair growth at the back and sides of your head to serve as donor areas. Transplant techniques such as flaps, tissue-expansion and scalp-reduction are procedures that can make a dramatic change in your appearance. A word of caution about choosing a doctor to do that kind of work. If a perspective doctor tells you that he or she has perfected one technique that can "do it all" you had best look for an alternative surgeon.
Hey Why is the Provillus serum only available for the United States? is it worth trying provillus if it's only the capsules? would it also regrow my hair? also, if I use provillus for a period of time (couple of months or so) and then stop using it, would my hair loss increase and get worse than it was before I started to use Provillus? Thank you.
AskDocWeb: The Provillus serum contains minoxidil, which has an import ban in countries like Canada. I suppose this is meant to encourage you to buy locally but we haven't checked that out.
One thing that seems to be hard to get across to people is that every product on the market that is effective for hair loss has to be used continuously in order to maintain the benefits of that product. This is also true for Provillus. If the product is discontinued, you go through a period of increased hair loss until all the benefits are lost. That typically occurs over a period of several months. At the end of that period you are right back where you started, losing hair at the same rate that you were losing it before you started using the product.
Happy with Provillus
I've used provillus for some time and i am happy with it. I recently ordered more but havent recieved it yet its been abt a week or so? Will the hair i regrew start to fall out again once it finally comes n i start using it again?
AskDocWeb: That doesn't seem likely. The hair loss that occurs once the product is discontinued happens over several months. As long as you start using it again within a couple of weeks we wouldn't expect any problem.
I'm considering using provillus capsules, which contain 1000 mg of saw plametto in each capsule, from what I know, the daily dosage is 3 capsules a day, which means 3000 mg of saw palmetto. could it possibly cause me any sexual side effects like erectile dysfunction or impotency?
AskDocWeb: Thanks for asking, J. You need to be careful about where you get your information. By your description it appears that you may have been reading about a counterfeit product. The real daily dose of Provillus is 2 capsules a day. If you get the real thing, each capsule contains 500mg of saw palmetto for a total daily dose of 1000mg of saw palmetto. It is highly unlikely that sexual side effects might be a problem unless you overdose by using too much of the topical solution, which contains minoxidil. The "Provillus for Men" consists of 2 parts. The first is a topical serum to be applied to the scalp. The other part is a supplement consisting of 60 capsules, which is a one-month supply. If you want to verify this click here.
Hey. I'm interested in trying the provillus capsules but I am debating on something that I would like your help with. I am 20 years old male and I started to lose hair 4-5 months ago, from what it seems to me, there is a chance I am having a female pattern baldness, because the pattern of my falling hair looks the same as my mothers (she is 47 and has thin hair and what looks like a bald line lengthwise the head, it seems to me that I am having the same pattern but just on early stages. So what I would like to know is if I should get the provillus capsules for men or women, which should I get? [...] Thanks in advance.
AskDocWeb: Since you are only 20 years old there is a possibility that your hair loss is caused by a medical condition so that is something to get checked out. We haven't seen anything to indicate that the pattern of hair loss might determine which version of product is used to treat it. The Provillus Complete Solution for men is a stronger formula. However, if you decide to try the women's version and don't see results in 3 or 4 months, there is nothing to stop you from switching to the stronger version.
I used Provillus for 2 months and had to stop because of horrific headaches
AskDocWeb: The main ingredient in Provillus is saw palmetto, which is known to cause headaches in a small percentage of users.
80 year old woman
I'm an 80yr old woman not using medication. Until about 3yrs ago, my hair was wonderful. I started losing it while caring for my husband who passed away last June. My dermatologist advised Nature Made Super B Complex w/Vit. C and Folic Acid and MEN's Rogaine. I was also taking 5000mcg of Biotin on my own. The loss seemed to abate somewhat for a while, but the Rogaine was hard to do every night and my hair always looked messy. I thought that with my stress reduced after my husband's passing, the situation might improve, but it's getting worse. I'm considering Provillus. Would I continue to take the Biotin and B-Complex supplements? How often do you suggest washing hair?
AskDocWeb: How often you "should" wash your hair varies greatly from one individual to the next. It depends on your environment, scalp condition, activity level, season of the year, and even hair color. Most people wash their hair either every other day or twice a week. Of course how often you wash it also depends on how oily it is and how much you perspire. Those who sweat a lot or have an oily scalp need to wash more often otherwise it begins to look greasy. In most cases there is no need to wash it every day other than just responding to the advertisements. Your scalp needs to produce a certain amount of oil for your hair in order to avoid split ends or your hair becoming brittle.
If you have lighter colored hair you might alternate between regular shampoo and a dry shampoo. With the dry shampoo you just sprinkle it on, massage it in and then brush it out. The reason for limiting its use to those with light colored hair is because most of the dry shampoos leave a white residue. Of course you could rinse out the residue but that would defeat the purpose of a "dry" shampoo.
Before the commercial versions of dry shampoo appeared on the market people used to use oatmeal to absorb scalp oil. If you have a blender you could try that. Just pulse the oats (yes this is the instant oat breakfast food) to make a fine powdered in the blender. You want it to be fine like flour so that it can coat the hair. Just sprinkle on, massage in & then brush out.
If you are shampooing every day because of heavy sweat there is an alternative. It's using a baking soda rinse. This neutralizes the acid in the sweat and doesn't rob the scalp of the natural oils that your hair needs. By alternating between shampoo and baking soda rinses you save on shampoo and make your scalp healthier at the same time.
