Subj: What is more difficult
What is more difficult to quit, Soma or vicodine? Then how about the combination? Am in for a tough road?
AskDocWeb: Vicodin is an opioid narcotic so it would be worse. And yes, you could have a rough time for awhile. Seek counseling if you need it and a pain management specialist may also be helpful.
Subj: Ridiculous side effects
I was just given Soma by my back doctor for a herniated disk in my lower back. I took one after I filled the prescription. All it did was make me lethargic as heck and seemed to slow down my thought process and writing abilities. I am not sure if those are known side effects but I am sure the soma was the cause for me. On top of it all, I experienced little relief of my muscle spasms, if not zero. Thankfully acupuncture works 1000 times better than Soma and it doesn't have the ridiculous side effects that, in reality, cancel out any benefit that Soma could possibly provide its user. This is just my opinion. However, I still have the question about the Soma making you slow (slowing down thought process) and lethargic. Does it?
AskDocWeb: In some people it does, that's why part of the warning states, "this drug may impair the mental and/or physical abilities...". Be sure to read the entire warning.
Subj: Soma OD
My sister was addicted to Soma and OD'd on them last week leaving behind two innocent children. If you don't have a medical reason for taking them, please get help to stop taking them. Your high is not worth the pain it causes others who love and care for you.
I am so worried. I have been on soma for 6 years or more, and I take at least 10-16 a day, I even order them on line because my prescription is only for 3 per day. I am starting to feel sick to my stomach, and many embarrassing things have happened to me while on them, what are the effects these pills are having internally on me, I have promised myself that this is the last bottle. Should I be worried?
AskDocWeb: Yes, drug abuse is always a cause for concern. Please talk to your doctor about this.
Subj: How can I go off safely
I was prescribed soma in 2003 for a back injury. Then my Mom passed away in the fall of that year. It was easy to stay on the drug because of my grief. Now I am addicted to them. I order them online and have read the other comments of people who have been on them and who have watched their loved ones on them. I too have experienced loss of coordination, slurred speech, increased appetite, difficulty walking. I want to get off. I'm afraid to admit it to my husband because I already have three times before. How can I go off safely at home? Is there a program I can do?
AskDocWeb: First have a consultation with your doctor and explain that what you want to accomplish and that you want to keep this confidential. Your doctor may refer you to a specialist but others have done it and so can you.
Subj: Pre-employment drug screen
Ok, here is the deal. I've read some of your feedback and things are not looking well for me. I took one half of a soma five days ago for back pain. Today I've got to take a pre-employment drug screen, is it going to show? If so what class of drug would they be testing for to find it?
AskDocWeb: As long as you tell them that you are taking it and you haven't overdosed or abused it you should be fine.
Subj: Dependent on Soma
I believe I'm dependent on Soma. I use it to calm myself down while on the job. I have a high stress job, and though I feel the effects and am able to make through the workday, find that when I get home I am absolutely zonked. Although I began taking it for back spasms, etc, I now find myself using 6 tablets a day which is far more than what is recommended. I have in the last several years been ordering the meds online, but finding that that I need to stop using. Is there a regimen that I can follow to stop this abuse? I'm currently seeing a counselor, but he is not aware of my dependence on the medication. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
AskDocWeb: For some people quitting cold turkey is the only thing that works, for others decreasing the amount over time until they are not taking them anymore is better. Either way can be tough.
Subj: Soma while pregnant
How long does it take to get Soma out of your body so I can conceive our first child? What products do I use to get Soma out of my system quickly?
AskDocWeb: There are tradeoffs that need to be considered between the benefits and risks of using Soma while pregnant and you need to talk with your doctor about them before you start trying. About the only thing you can do to make it get out of your body as fast as possible is to make sure you stay well hydrated, that is, drink plenty of water.
Subj: I tried to kill myself
I got off anti depressants for 8 months...it gets me high, sexual...feeling good. but after things started to go wrong in my life I had a back injury...I lost my parents, husband had cancer...I took 120 pills...was in a coma 3 days...and was thought I was not going to live...they said the heart is a voluntary muscle and the others are in voluntary...whatever. It has been 2 years after a rehab and long hospital stay. I buy them online and still need like 4 a day to feel normal. I take xanax too. I am very hyper. So maybe I could have died...I was found 9 hours later...I won't do that again. I think my head is on straight...money love animals ...it is me. I hope this helps. There was barely a heartbeat...I was in ICU in a coma for quite a few days. Then to a mental ward then to a rehab. By choice...good luck to everyone. It's hard when you have an additive personality.
Subj: Ruptured, herniated and degenerative disc pain
I've been taking somma for about 20 years for ruptured, herniated and degenerative discs pain. Have always kept the dosage to 2 a day for prevention of episodes and pain control. I don't drink alcohol except on the weekends and never more than 3 to 3 1/2 drinks an evening. I'm 63 years old and have an annual physical and so far everything seems to be ticking along fine except for having supraventricular tachycardia which I just developed. It seems to be linked with my stress level...improves with less stress...increases with more. Should I be concerned about any long term side effects and if so what might they be and how severe?
AskDocWeb: Tachycardia is listed as one of the adverse reactions to this drug, which is something you need to discuss with your doctor.
Subj: Trying to stop
I've been taking soma for over 2 years now. I was in the first of 6 car accidents 2 years ago. I had a torn thecal sac (small herniation) and most recently a year ago was in a major accident...titanium bone replacement in my arm, broken neck, 4 disc bulges for a total of 9 and other minor stuff. So my problem is I'm trying to stop taking the somas but I'm having Tachycardia. Over 110 beats per min. so if I don't take them I can't sleep. I have xanax for anxiety but don't want to take them instead cause I know they are worse. I don't know if stopping taking them totally will be ok or if there is something I can take to make my heart stop racing. Thanks so much,
AskDocWeb: This is something that you will have to work out with your doctor, probably starting with checking your blood pressure and pulse when off of Soma and then going from there.
Subj: Here are my thoughts
I take soma for health reasons and I do enjoy that euphoric feeling after taking a couple. What's the problem? Why is it legal for my alcoholic friend to go purchase their drug of choice...no questions asked? Yet I'm made to feel guilty and have to jump through hoops and go begging from my doctor who treats me like a child. Ridiculous. Man has been trying to "get high" since time began. Is it bad for you? Sure. So is mountain climbing. The alcoholic in my life causes more pain and suffering than my handful of somas yet it's perfectly okay in the eyes of society...even encouraged. (Think beer commercials) Go figure.
Subj: Weight gain?
My 16-year old has been on Soma for approx. 2 years as a muscle relaxant for her neck for migraines. She is 50lbs overweight and no matter what cannot lose the weight. Can Soma affect weight-loss?
AskDocWeb: Weight gain is not listed as one of the side effects of Soma.
Subj: Can't remember anything
My brother takes Soma alot. He takes one or two for his bad back and then takes more because he can't remember taking the first two. Then he takes more till he can't talk or walk straight. The bad thing is the next day. He is devil mean and can't remember anything about the day before. Do you think my brother is a drugee? Oh, I forgot to tell you, he started marijuana when he was twelve. It's all bad. Thanks,
AskDocWeb: It sounds like you already know that your brother is abusing drugs.
Subj: Neurosurgeon upset
When my Doctor, a NeuroSurgeon found out I was taking Soma for sever muscle spasms he was very upset and told me to flush them down the toilet and never take another pill. He said they did bad things to the brain but I don't know what it is they do. I've taken them off and on for two years...and they did not help with the spasms.
