Is yeast infection contagious?
Date: 3/11/2011
Hi am a 23 year old female, I was recently diagnosed with yeast infection. This is my second one I have had, since I been sexually active for five years. My question is, Is my partner at risk of having a yeast infection because of me. I noticed a bumb on his penis which he hasn't had before since I been diagnosed. It looks like a pimple. I feel guilty and I can't find a way for him to go and get checked. He just won't go. I'm on treatment, and taking a cream. I don't have to have sexual relationships with her until we're good. Help? advise? How seriously will it be for him, if he don't get checked or treated if he has the infection?

AskDocWeb: It is possible to pass a yeast infection back and forth between a couple. However, a yeast infection does not show up as a single bump, so that may be a separate issue. How serious it is for him depends on what is causing that bump. Typically the faster someone seeks treatment, the better the results. Waiting just gives the problem more time to grow and for complications to develop.

Severe burning sensation and itching
Date: 3/19/2011
Is it commom to experience itching a few days after a yeast infection treatment? (All other symtoms gone) Is it also common to have a severe burning sensation when the medication is coming out of the vagina?

AskDocWeb: If the infection was cleared up then there wouldn't be any itching or burning. It is common for this type of infection to keep coming back or require more than one treatment.

Bacterial Vaginosis
Date: 3/21/2011
Fortunately men can avoid spreading the disease as there would seem to me to be kind of a red flag here. Unfortunately, vaginas have been universally described for ages as smelling like sardines. I would therefore recommend that the fishy part be left out of the symptoms list - as most men will have a difficult time sorting it out by the time they get close enough for a sniff.... A foul, or fishy, vaginal odor.

AskDocWeb: Thanks Paul, we appreciate you input. However, after considering your recommendation we decided to keep that part of the symptom list for Bacterial Vaginosis. The reason for this is that we have personal experience at detecting that odor from four feet away.

Fluconazole and discharge
Date: 5/5/2011
I've been taking the medicine fluconazole its been 24hrs but I'm still discharge is that normal????

AskDocWeb: Typically it takes 5 days for the infection to completely heal. The discharge sounds like normal symptoms. As the medication begins to work, the vagina clears itself of the infection and this is what you are seeing. If after 5 days you still experience itching, discharge, or anything else unusual, then you should consult with your doctor. I understand it's hard to wait but it will be over soon.

Related note: You may want to protect your clothing by wearing a panty liner or thin pad while the discharge is clearing the body. Be sure to change it frequently as the discharge can be very irritating to the tissues of the outer vagina and the insides of your thighs. Sometimes it helps to cleanse the area after urination with a disposable moist wipe like they sell in the TP isle. That helps make you feel fresher and eliminates the irritating discharge from the outer vaginal tissues.

Update 8/20/2011: Rylee recommends Vagisil Extra Strength and Vagisil Extra Strength towelettes to relieve itching (see Rylee's post).

How long should I wait for Monistat to work?
Date: 9/25/2011
I used Monistat 1 recently. How long should I wait for it to work before I follow up with my doctor?

AskDocWeb: The manufacturer of Monistat says that if you do not feel some relief within 3 days, or complete relief within 7 days, stop using the product and contact your doctor.

For those who are experiencing their first yeast infection, we suggest talking to your doctor before using anything.

Date: 12/1/2011
Hello I read your article and I believe I have a yeast infection all I feel is burning and I be having discharges. what should I do.

AskDocWeb: You should check with your doctor if:
  • This is the 1st time you have symptoms of yeast infection.
  • You are not sure your problem is a yeast infection.
  • If the infection you treat comes back within 2 months.
  • If the infection does not respond to treatment.
The reasons for the above are, if you use an over-the-counter medication to treat yeast infection and you have something else, your body may become drug-resistant to the yeast infection medication. This might make the medication less effective if you later contracted a yeast infection. The other danger is that you may be leaving the real problem untreated. You may have a more serious infection or condition such as chlamydia or gonorrhea. Chronic vaginal infections can be one of the first signs of diabetes, sexually transmitted diseases or HIV/AIDS.

Infection goes away and comes back again
Date: 12/17/2011

Yeast infection and Vaseline?
Date: 12/22/2011
This is my third but with a yeast infection. My internist gave me a prescription for two pills, of something I forgot, but begins with a Fl. and helps, but returns. I am 7w, and my husband and I are not frequently having intercoarse. He has a problem at 75, with an erectile situation.(Sorry for any spelling errors.) I do wear s silky, or synthetic panties. I will change to cotton. Sometimes my anus gets sore, and Vaseline takes that away, however I do not use the Vaseline on my vagina. Should I? I would greatly appreciate any feedback. Thank you very much.

AskDocWeb: In general it is a good idea to avoid using Vaseline as a vaginal lubricant as it can increase the chances and severity of vaginal yeast infections. The pills were likely Fluconazole, which has a pretty good track record in treating yeast infections. You may want to review the Frequently Asked Questions about yeast infections.

First yeast infection
Date: 1/7/2012
I had my first yeast infection diagnosed by a doctor. She recommended using Monistat so I used the off-brand version of Monistat 1. It is four days after using it and my labia still itches and there is kind of a white substance around my vagina. Should I go see my doctor again or try to use Monistat 7?

AskDocWeb: If you read the directions you will find that they say to speak to your health care provider if one treatment doesn't work. That doesn't necessarily mean that you have to make a doctor's appointment. You may be able to just call the office and speak over the phone.

Fluconazole and discharge
Date: 2/8/2012
I took Fluconazole tablet last night and now I'm having a lot of discharge how long before it stops? How long do I have to wait to have sex?

AskDocWeb: Couples that have unprotected sex can pass a yeast infection back and forth endlessly. For this reason most sources agree that sex should be avoided until you have finished your treatment. As Fluconazole begins to work, the vagina will clear itself of the overgrowth of yeast and this is likely what you are seeing. You might want to protect your clothing by wearing a panty liner or thin pad while the yeast is being cleared out. Be sure to change it frequently as the discharge can be very irritating to the outer vaginal tissues and the insides of your thighs. The discharge should only last a few days as the medicine works to clear out the yeast infection.
