Getting pimples

This is my first time taking Acyclovir I take it three times a day for five days. Well I started getting pimples all over my upper back and chest and face. I don’t know if this is because of the medicine because I haven’t changed anything of what I use.

AskDocWeb: Some patients report an increase in acne while using antivirals. You might ask your doctor about switching to Famvir to see if it gets better. Note that both shingles and herpes sores have been mistaken for pimples so check with your doctor.

Thinking of stopping Acyclovir

I have been on acyclovir 400mg for over 5yrs for herpes virus, to keep down any out break. I was advice to take 1 a day or every other day, and I don’t really get out breaks and if I feel any tingling feelings I will take 3x a day for like a week, but I am thinking of stopping them daily, what do you think? But do it weaken your immune system or cause other health problems, because I get sick very easely and frequently, with fever, cold like symthoms, very tired, headaches

What’s the maximum dosage?

My wife is using Acyclovir 400 mg and she has canker sores that happen every once and a while. I wanted to know if she increased her intake from twice a day to 4 times a day would she recover from the canker sores she is fighting? Also what is the maximum someone can take in a day in terms of mg? Her weight is about 170 since i know a lot of medications are based on weight. I really want her to recover from the canker sores she is having a hard time eating, talking, and sleeping; worst of all it’s not helping her at the current dosage.

AskDocWeb: The maximum daily dosage listed in the Physician’s Desk Reference is 800 mg every 4 hour hours, that’s 5 times a day for a total of 4000 mg (4 grams) to treat acute herpes zoster. Of course for those with renal impairment the dosage would have to be modified downward according to their creatinine clearance. Always check with your personal healthcare provider before making any changes in dosage or treatment.

Can I be herpes free?

I will be very happy if you can help me. I am 32 years male 2 year back i had herpes outbreak on my penis that time i dont know what it was i went to doctor he said must be some infection and doctor gave some cream to apply after i felt ok no problem but nearly one later i had again same problem and i went same doctor this time he it look like you have herpes he told me to see skin doctor and i went doctor he you have herpes and he gave me acyclovir 400mg and told me whenever you outbreaks take same medican and then outbreaks start coming every month and had to medican i took for about one year i mean whenever i had outbreaks . then again i met the doctor this i saw the pamphlet inside the acyclovir box its says if you want to ged rid of herpes you must take course for 6 or one year acyclovir tablets 400mg i am eating this medican from last 8 months i start nov 2011. so can you please tell me will it help me can i be herpes free will? this medican have some side effects how dangerous they are please reply me

AskDocWeb: Acyclovir does help those with herpes. It reduces the number of outbreaks and when outbreaks do occur, Acyclovir reduces both the severity of the outbreak and the length of time it takes to recover. However this medication is only a treatment, it is not a cure for herpes. Currently there is no cure for herpes.

Severe Muscle Aches and pain

200mg two capsules by mouth three times a day for ten days=Sleepy, Severe Muscle Aches and pain especially in ankles and legs bottoms of feet became clammy and tender. Some tingling and numbness on the left side of my face and arm. Trouble urinating having to focus and push pee will stop until I push again. General Fatigue, 29 yr old white female no prior STD history recently diagnosed and prescribed. Seems taking this is more of an inconvient chore with such an active lifestyle and wondering if valtrex would be less symptomatic and deliver better results with a lower dose?

AskDocWeb: Valtrex is a pro-drug, which means that it is changed to acyclovir in the digestive system. The benefit is that it stays in your system much longer and that allows people to take it twice a day instead of five times a day – better for your active lifestyle. The downside is that Valtrex is usually more expensive than Acyclovir.

Another difference between the two has to do with breastfeeding. Studies have shown that acyclovir accumulates in breast milk but they also showed that there were no problems seen in the infants. A current study showed that Valtrex is not found in breast milk. They also conclude that Valtrex is safe during breastfeeding.

Allergic reaction?

Will acyclovir, after cause allergic reaction. My mouth itch and my breast itch severly. I have severe fatigue. I have fever and my muscles ache and pain. Could that be due to this medication?

AskDocWeb: Fatigue, skin rash, and leg pain are possible side effects of Acyclovir. Unfortunately fatigue and fever are also symptoms of the herpes virus. It is possible to have an allergic reaction to Acyclovir although that is rare. The signs of an allergic reaction are hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Hives typically appear as slightly raised, pink or red swellings on the skin and may itch intensely. If you think that you have hives, get immediate medical attention.
