Irregular menses
7/29/2012
I had shingles diagnosed the past Friday. So the doctore gave me the Acylovir. Friday night I bleed from my vaginal area pretty heavy until I passed a fist sized clot. Then the bleeding stopped. Again last night I began to bleed and past clots but this time it went on for 5 hours I was basincally dieing, both times after taking the daily fifth pill. Now I am also the age of premenapause and have had some irregular menses, but never passing cloots or bleeding out like this. I had to go to the ER last night and my blood pressure dropped so low they had to giveme saline, then the bleeding stopped and my bp went back to quasi normalonce again. Thank God or I would have absolutely needed a blood transfusion and possibly surgery. Now I am the age of premenapause and have had some irregular periods but never passed these clots nor practically bled out like this. All my life my menses were extremely light. So wondering do I chance taking this new antiviral for a mild case of the shingles and risk all that happened last night or worse, or do I forfit the drugs and hope for the best. Has this happened to anyone else?

Susan

AskDocWeb: Acyclovir is not known to effect the menstrual cycle. However, readers with a similar experience are invited to comment.

Acyclovir for prevention of shingles
7/29/2012
I was prescribed Acyclovir, 400 mil twice a day for prevention of shingles while I was on chemo drugs. I stopped the chemo drugs in June. Can I stop taking the acyclovir, and will there be any side effects if I do?

Pat

AskDocWeb: That depends on your current condition which can only be evaluated in personal by your healthcare provider. This is why it is important to keep your follow-up appointments so that your treatment may be adjusted as needed.

Can I take lysine with Acyclovir?
7/30/2012
I have a cold sore beginning on my lip and my neighbor gave me lysine to take. I also have acyclovir and want to know if i can take one of each or if taking them both is not good.

Sarah

AskDocWeb: There are a couple of health concerns” with taking lysine but the only drug/herb interaction we have seen is with anticoagulants. Many nutritionally oriented healthcare providers combine lysine therapy with conventional antiviral medications such as acyclovir.

Bleach?
8/9/2012
It is good to use soap and water with a little bleach or colox and wash your body with this it will help?

Chacha

AskDocWeb: There is some limited evidence that bleach might be a home remedy for the relief of herpes symptoms. The most common recommendation is to wash the area with diluted chlorine bleach. This is believed to kill the virus on the skin, rendering it impotent for the moment and relieving symptoms. In 1988 pubmed published a scientific study by W.S. Croughan and A.M. Behbehani from the University of Kansas Medical Center. That study demonstrated that an application of bleach for 10 minutes could render the virus inactive. However, there are some risks to using bleach. Even when properly diluted, bleach can still cause irritation and burn the skin. Prolonged breathing of bleach fumes is toxic due to sodium hypochlorite. If you try it, be sure to dilute the mixture and apply it in a room with sufficient ventilation.

I’ve had similar problems with clots and heavy menstrual bleeding. i never took acyclovir. im not saying that your issues are not related but it’s worth checking. it’s possible that you too have a uterine fibroid which causes super bleeding and only gets worse. i lost 1/3 of my blood and became white like a wall (usually my face is red whether i like it or not). please check with your gynecologist and rule out uterine fibroid. hopefully you don’t have it. and if you do, mine was removed laparoscopically, with minor incisions and faster recovery time. wish you well.

Weak, feverish and dizzy
8/20/2012
I am 28 Years Old, i have been recently diagnosed with Herpes Simplex /Superfacial Keratistis, the doctore prescribed Acyclovir 200gm i.e, two tablets five times a day, i have just completed the medication two days ago, and it really helped, however if feel weak, feverish and dizzy just after the treatment. what could be the caurse?

Rendy

AskDocWeb: Dizziness and fatigue are possible side effects of Acyclovir. Herpes Simplex often results in a fever and swollen glands under the neck. The swollen glands can make swallowing difficult and if liquids are not taken, dehydration can result.

Superficial Keratitis involves the uppermost layers of the eye’s cornea. Although it is more commonly seen in dogs (German Shepherds, Belgian Tervurens, Border Collies, Greyhounds, Siberian Huskies, and Australian Shepherds) it also occurs human beings.

Ive been on Acyclovir 800 mg five times a day I have been on the medication for 3 days for shingles. My pain has gotten less after 2 day. Have to go to the bath room more often but have increased my water from 6 glasses to 8 or more, just a little confusion, but feel a lot better than before medication was started, pain in my back has decreased, and have no itching just some burning from the out break that on my right breast.
