I want to go back on Acyclovir
Date: 6/6/2015
What is the longest period that you know that a person has taken acyclovir? I just quit after about three years..I thought I would give my body a break but had three lesions within a week and then have had extreme almost crippling aches and pains from doing a rather hard renovation project..(during the outbreaks)…I want to go back on the Acyclovir…can I take it the rest of my life?..also how many people are affected by herpes and should I be embarrassed to go to a doctor about it?

AskDocWeb: The Centers for Disease Control estimates that at least 45 million adults have the genital strain of herpes and 65 percent of us are likely to have oral herpes. Since it is such a common affliction there is no need to be embarrassed about going to the doctor about it.

The oral use of Acyclovir became available about 17 years ago. So far there is no indication of any limit as to how long it can be used.

I’ve been taking 500 mg for 3 days now and I have had horrible migraines everyday since I started. Could this be from the meds and what is safe to take?

Acylex for syphilis?
Date: 7/28/2015
I’ve been using ACYLEX 400mg twice a day for the treatment of Syphilis (primary stage) as advised by docter but its not much usefull tell me am I going through right treatment?

AskDocWeb: There seems to be some confusion as to your diagnosis and/or treatment. Acylex appears to be one of the brand names of Acyclovir, which is an antiviral drug. Syphilis is a bacterial infection which, if caught early, may be cured with antibiotics. Antiviral drugs and antibiotics are different classes of medication. A single dose of Benzathine penicillin G (an antibiotic) is extremely effective in treating the early stages of syphilis, and in larger doses, the antibiotic is fairly effective in treating the later stages of the disease. (Source) You may want to ask your doctor if you have a viral infection or a bacterial infection. Antiviral drugs are used to treat viral infections and antibiotics are used to treat bacterial infections.

Compare Valtrex with Acyclovir
Date: 8/2/2015
I have been taking Valtrex for 1 1/2 years after stem-cell transplant for double-hit lymphama. Because my Medicare drug plan will not pay for Valtrex, I will begin taking 800 mg of Acyclovir twice a day on Tues. aug 4 th. no side effects of the 500 mg of Valtrex. Can I expect the same results with Acyclovir.

AskDocWeb: Valtrex is an acyclovir prodrug. That means when you swallow Valtrex your body converts it into acyclovir. Valtrex delivers acyclovir more efficiently so that the body absorbs much of the drug, which has the advantage of taking the medication fewer times during the day. The possible side effects and effectiveness appear to be the same.

I was prescribed Acyclovir 800mg for my first genetal herpes outbreak for 7 days. My physician informed any chance of pregnancy may result in Defective child. Does taking Acyclovir before trying to get pregnant may harm the child?

AskDocWeb: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified Acyclovir as a category B medication. Pregnancy Category B is given to medicines that have not been studied in pregnant humans but that do not appear to cause harm to the fetus in animal studies.

However, it is important to note that animals do not always respond to medicines the same way that humans do. Nonstandard animal studies have produced fetal abnormalities, while standard animal testing failed to reveal the same results. Acyclovir is only recommended for use during pregnancy when benefits outweigh the risks.
