Subj: Long term Adipex problems?
Date: 10/16/2007
I was on adipex for 2 years, and lost about 83lbs but I developed depression because I thought I was still fat. I went from 213 to 130. The doctor put me on lexapro for my depression but he did not wait the 2 weeks for the adipex to get out of my system. Shortly after starting my lexapro my toes and foot was numb like it was asleep now it has moved up past my knee. My leg acts like it’s paralyzed and I have lost 2 inches in size around comparing it to the other leg. I also have lost muscle control and muscle tone and now have drop foot which the ER doctor says I developed Peroneal palsy. I now have to have a custom leg brace that cost $500 in order for my leg to work. The doctor said that my leg has permanent nerve damage and that it will get worse.

My family doctor only did a heart check, liver check and blood work when I was first put on this pill but never monitored these things the whole 2 years I was on it. My days of working on my feet, dancing, wearing sandals and anything other than a tie up shoe is gone. The doctor said surgery might fix the problem but he thinks the problem is to far gone to fix. I am scheduled for an EMG and an MRI to find out what is happening with my leg.

I was a healthy person who was hardly ever sick and now I have a disability. I told my family doctor that I was having problem with my sciatic nerve and my tail bone and he said I was ok. I am a walking skeleton now. I have no fat or muscle anywhere on my body. My leg and foot is also always cold which according to the ER Dr I have lack of circulation to this leg. After the neurologist gets done and I see what the results are my mom who is a nurse is taking me to cardiologist to have my heart checked for any problems caused from this pill because I was on it for so long instead of 12 weeks max. I am now showing signs of a lot of medical problems, which I have never had before. I have complained about my dizziness, my headaches, my balance with tripping over my foot to my doctor but he continued to give me the pills and said I was fine that these were common side effects. I was wondering, are my medical conditions caused by these pills?

Victoria

AskDocWeb: It sounds like you have more going on than just side effects but remember, you have the ability to change your doctor or at least get a second opinion.

Subj: Sex drive
Date: 11/12/2007
I have taken adipex for the 1st time and I’ve lost my sex drive for these few days. Is this effect permanent? Are there any ways to recover my sex drive while taking adipex?

Sisho

AskDocWeb: Only two people have posted about a change in their sex drive; one reported an increase and the other a decrease in sex drive. We suspect that it may have another cause.

Subj: Is it safe?
Date: 11/16/2007
Just started adipex today no side effects yet. I have chronic hypertension, taking TARKA 2-240, my doctors says its ok to take, just wanted second opinion, is it safe? Thank you,

Tracy

AskDocWeb: You might want to keep an eye on your blood pressure and check it twice weekly. If it starts to go above 150/86 you should contact your doctor.

Subj: The good and the bad
Date: 11/29/2007
I just started taking Adipex yesterday and was wired to a T. Cleaned house and did laundry, the energy rush was amazing. I’ve read that a lot of people had trouble sleeping. I have trouble anyway, but last night I slept so good and when I woke up this morning after 6 hours of sleep, I was ready to go! I was a little jittery and very talkative but that was it. This morning I took it and an hour later ate breakfast, and the only side effect was dry mouth, which was fine because it pushed me to drink water. All this feedback scares me a little, you’ve got the good and the bad.

I am 21, have an 11 month old baby and I am 70lbs overweight. I weighed 176 when I got pregnant, childbirth weight was 206 and then in 3 weeks, I was down to 173. Well as soon as my husband came home from Iraq, it was back up again. And now I’m at 196. My doctor wants me at 125, he believes that is a healthy weight for me. Not to mention I am 5’3″. I understand that water and diet and exercise is the key, but I don’t have a lot of extra time for exercise. I am going to try to work my schedule to squeeze at least an hour in 3days a week. Any advice? I also have hypothyroidism. Is there anything I should be worried about?

Juliana

AskDocWeb: The use of Adipex is not recommended for those with hyperthyroidism. Please contact your doctor about alternatives.

Subj: Adipex/trazodone
Date: 11/29/2007
My doctor prescribed adipex/trazodone 50mg to me 6 months ago. I took 1 adipex in the morning and 1 trazodone before bed and noticed the weight came off really fast….Now I’ve just started back taking adipex (alone) 2 days ago. Will the adipex work okay alone or should I still be doing the combination above.

Carol

AskDocWeb: Since Trazodone has been associated with weight gain, you may find that the use of Adipex alone works even better. Good luck.

Subj: Lost 76 poounds
Date: 12/7/2007
Have been taking adipex for several months…I don’t know if it suppressed my appetite, but nothing really sounded good to me. I reduced my calorie intake to about 800-900 calories a day. In seven months I lost 76 pounds. I did not exercise, which I should and I will do. I experienced mild side effects like dry mouth and constipation…but it was well worth that. I do feel that lately it is extremely difficult to concentrate and to remember things. Since I have lost plenty of weight I plan to quite taking it after Christmas. I don’t foresee any problems as I have missed taking it a time or two before without a problem.

Subj: Sex drive?
Date: 12/8/2007
Is it normal for Adipex to effect your sex drive? What about your ability to urinate? Other then these effects I have been pleased as I have lost almost 23 lbs. in six weeks while still eating.

SDH

AskDocWeb: Adipex has been reported to cause changes in sex drive however the exact percentage of people who experienced changes in sex drive has not been reported. It is unclear whether these changes involve an increased sex drive, decreased sex drive, or both.

Subj: Hypothyroidism
Date: 12/13/2007
I am currently taking synthroid for hypothyroidism and want to begin adipex…are these two meds ok to take together?

Tammi

AskDocWeb: Adipex is not recommended if you have a history of hyperthyroidism.

Subj: Pain
Date: 12/15/2007
Hi I have been taking adipex for about 2 months now and along with that I take armor thyroid. In the past week I have experience upper left quadrent pain and radiates to my back and down my side. Is this something from taking both together or is it something different all together?

Cheryl

AskDocWeb: It doesn’t sound like it but we suggest you report this to your doctor. Pain like this should not be ignored.

Subj: Goosebumps/chills
Date: 12/19/2007
I am on Adipex-P and I am not sure if this is related but every time I eat I get goosebumps/chills. Any ideas?

Jen

AskDocWeb: Sorry no, that does not sound like it is related to the Adipex-P. Better consult with your physician.

Subj: Best place to order Adipex?
Date: 12/22/2007
I was wondering what the best place was to order adipex. I want to order it but I want to make sure it comes from a trusted site with a good reputation. I would appreciate your help. I love your website, it’s very helpful. Thanks!

Tanner

AskDocWeb: Sorry Tanner, there are no websites left that we can recommend for ordering any drug online.

Subj: Loosing Hair very bad!!!
Date: 12/26/2007
I took adipex for 3 months and my hair started coming out by the handfuls in shower. Been to dr. twice and they say it is from loosing too much weight too fast. My hair is very thin and it is still coming out. It has been going on for about 2 1/2 months. Has anyone else had this too and how long will the hair loss last? I know that it is not listed as side effect but I think it needs to be added. Someone let me know if there is anything to do to help the hairloss. I’ve stopped taking the adipex about a month now. thanks,

Vickie

AskDocWeb: Drug induced hair loss usually reverses after the treatment is discontinued so there is a good chance that it will grow back. However, that may take from 4 to 6 months.

Subj: Adipex concern
Date: 1/20/2008
I’m under a physician care and just received the adipex drug. I’m a little nervous about taking this drug after noticing the ingredient name; Phentermine. I need to lose 25-30 pounds, but just concern about the drug!

Subj: 35 pounds lighter
Date: 1/22/2008
I have been on this pill for a little over 3 months and am 35 pounds lighter. I am now exercising at least 5 times a week (an hour a day) and have cut my calories to 1400 a day. Rarely do I eat more than that. I am a fanatic at journaling what I eat. I think that this has been the main reason for my success. I had no idea what was in food! I am now worried what will happen when I stop taking the pill. I hope to do this very soon. Any thoughts?

Michelle

AskDocWeb: As long as you continue eating properly and exercising you should not gain any weight back.

Subj: Adipex
Date: 1/26/2008
Adipex. 1! pill was too much for me.. irritable, jittery, itchy rash.. 1/2 pill works better for me…less hungry good energy. My period spotted for 28 days straight. My doctor says adipex is reducing the estrogen in my system, which causes the uteran lining to constantly shed (period).. which is not a big deal, just a side effect. Have not lost weight yet but need to exercise.

Subj: Why have I not lost a pound?
Date: 2/15/2008
I have been taking apidex for about a week now and I’ve been dieting and excercising. The pill has helped me dramatically with my appetite I could a difference by the second day of taking it. I know I’ve only been on it a week but why have I not lost a pound? Could I be retaining water? Thanks,

Lania

AskDocWeb: You could be retain water but it is also possible to loose fat and gain muscle at the same time, which would not show up on the scales but would still be progress.

Subj: 70 pounds to lose
Date: 2/8/2008
I have been on Weight Watchers since Nov. 7, 2007 and have lost 15 pounds so far. I am on 37.5 effexor daily and was wondering if I could take Adipex. I have approximately 70 more pounds of weight to lose.

Stacy

AskDocWeb: Your doctor may want you to be off the Effexor before starting Adipex. It’s a good idea to let your doctor choose what may work best for you.

Subj: Would it really hurt me?
Date: 2/19/2008
I was on Adipex for a week and I LOVED IT!!! I lost 10 lbs. that week and wasn’t hungry at all. I actually had to force myself to eat. Unfortunately on the 5th day I started to experience shortness of breath. My doctor told me to stop taking it and I’m devastated. I know the doctor knows what she’s talking about, but would it really hurt me that much if I took the pill for a week, then took a week off. Then took it for another week and then took a week off? This was the only diet pill that actually worked for me. I still have 40-50 lbs. that I need to lose!

Shauna

AskDocWeb: Your doctor is trying to protect you from harm while helping you improve your health. You have a better chance of success with losing that weight if you follow her advice. Going against it could cause you serious and possibly life-threatening problems.
