Subj: 80 lb weight gain
Date: 4/23/2009
I was put on adipex 11 days ago after an 80 lb weight gain from my pregnancy. I am 23yrs old 5’6 and started the medicine at 209lbs. In 11 days I have lost 10 lbs. I have two toddler boys under 3 so exercise doesn’t happen often unless it’s chasing them. I haven’t had any side effects and have over all been feeling great. I have noticed that I do still get really hungry. I will feel like I could eat a 10 lb turkey but only end up taking a couple of bites before I am full. I did wonder though what the healthy amount of daily calorie consumption is. My doctor said he wanted to see me cut back to 600-700 calories a day! While still exercising for 60 min. 5 days a week. I have kept to the calorie amount and have worked out 3 but I feel exhausted! Is this amount of calories Ok?

Kendra

AskDocWeb: With that high a BMI you should take your doctor’s advice very seriously. You can take some comfort from knowing that the exhausted feeling is a sign that what you are doing is working and you are losing weight.

Subj: How long will it take?
Date: 4/25/2009
This is my second day on adipex and my head is hurting and feeling tired my doctor wanting me to take 2 tablets. I am going to take 1 tablets for now I am 5’1 and weigh 140 how long will it take me to loose weight?

TINA

AskDocWeb: That depends on how well you follow your doctor’s instructions. In order to lose weight you may have to put up with some discomfort. However, side effects that become unacceptable should be reported to your doctor.

Subj: Using Adipex with other drugs
Date: 4/25/2009
I used Phentermine a couple of years ago for weight loss. I would like to try using Adipex to lose more weight, however, I am now taking Topamax (75mg.), Verapamil (ER 180mg.) for migraines and Synthroid (.088mg) after having a toxic node on my thyroid. Would it be safe to use the Adipex in combination with my current medications?

Vickie

AskDocWeb: When Adipex is taken with certain other drugs, it can change the effects of either drug. The effects of both drugs can be increased, decreased, altered or produce unexpected side effects. It is especially important that you check with your doctor before combining Adipex with any of the following drugs:

  • Drugs that boost serotonin levels, such as the antidepressants paroxetine hydrochloride, fluoxetine hydrochloride, and sertraline
  • MAO inhibitors, including the antidepressants tranylcypromine sulfate and phenelzine sulfate
  • Diabetes medications such as glyburide and insulin
  • High blood pressure medications such as guanethidine

Subj: Can I take adipex?
Date: 4/26/2009
I have had the gastric bypass and I have not reached my goal and have not reached my goal weight my question is can I take adipex to help reach my goal?

Virginia

AskDocWeb: The gastric bypass does not necessarily rule out using Adipex but you will have to check with your doctor to find out if there might be others reasons for not taking it.

Subj: Where’s my energy?
Date: 4/29/2009
I’ve only been on Adipex for two days but have been feeling kinda depressed. I haven’t really been hungry and don’t have any energy. I feel worn out but haven’t done anything that should cause me to feel that way. Where’s my energy?

Ashley

Subj: Losing too fast?
Date: 4/30/2009
Ok…so I’m liking the Adipex. I’ve been on it for a week and already lost 15 lbs. I’m just concerned if I’m losing too fast. I mean is that too much for one week? I’m 21 yrs old. I only exercise about twice a week and I eat nutrition bars and drink lots of water. When I try to eat real food I take like 3 bites and I can’t eat anymore. Lol. Am I ok?

Cris

AskDocWeb: You are probably okay but you may want to talk to your doctor about how fast you should be losing weight. The concern about losing weight too fast is that you are much more likely to put the pounds back on once you quit the drug. Remember that Adipex is supposed to be used in conjunction with life-style changes in your diet and level of activity. If you just take the pills without making any changes then you will likely gain it all back when the pills are discontinued.

Subj: Headache
Date: 5/4/2009
I have taken it for a couple days now and everything is good except for a headache. Motrin seemed to take the edge off but I was wondering if this will go away after a couple days.

Genna

AskDocWeb: Although headaches are not listed as a side effect of Adipex several people have report them. The headaches may or may not go away, there is one report of getting headaches even after a year of use.

Subj: My cycle has been way heavier
Date: 5/5/2009
I’ve been taking adipex for about 2 months. I’ve lost about 20 pounds so far but I’ve had one problem that has started since I have been taking.. On my cycle it has been way way heavier and I’ve had really bad cramps. Is this normal or is something not right?

Tammy

AskDocWeb: While it is not one of the listed side effects of Adipex a few women have reported a difference in their menstrual cycle. It is best to check with your health care provider to make sure that everything is okay.

Subj: Back to the doctor
Date: 5/7/2009
I started using adipex in 2004. I lost 54lbs. I was very happy with the product. So I gained the weight back plus more. So I started going back to the doctor for the adipex and now it seem like its now working the same. Can you tell me why this is happening? And should I try something different? What do you recommend?

Jolene

AskDocWeb: One of the problems of using diuretic drugs is that the body can build up a tolerance for them and they stop working after a time. If you are not happy with the results then go back to your doctor. Sometimes your dosage may need to be adjusted, your whole approach changed, or something in between.

Subj: Depression, headaches, and crying episodes
Date: 5/8/2009
I take Adipex, I wish I did not though. I realize that this drug is very addictive. The depression, headaches, crying episodes, etc., etc., are all very real effects of this medicine. The addiction can be likened to that of illegal drugs such as meth and crank. Then when 37.5mg a day stops working for you, you find yourself taking another 1/2 pill later in the day. Then you run out of your prescription before the month is over and have to sweat out the last week until you can see the Dr. again. You feel like a junkie waiting for your fix. You love yourself for your amazing weight loss and hate yourself for the intense craving for this drug. The only bright spot is hopefully you are working on the original reasons you gained weight in the first place while you are under the influence of Adipex. If you are not working on building healthy eating and exercise patterns while you have Adipex to give you energy and appetite supression, then your whole weight reduction plan will be useless and you will gain back more than you lose.

Subj: What am I doing wrong?
Date: 5/12/2009
Hi, I just started taking adipex a little over a week ago its been about 9 days now and I dont feel any differnent and I have been excersisng at the gym doing lots of weights and walking and I’m very active and still nothing… I have 2 force myself to eat and I drink nothing but green tea and water. Please help? What am I doing wrong? I dont understand why I dont feel any different and I dont feel great at all I feel the same…how long will it be before I see results?

Terra

AskDocWeb: It is possible that you aren’t doing anything wrong. Since you are working out, you may be losing fat and gaining muscle at the same time. That kind of progress will not show up on your bathroom scale but over time you will notice a difference.

Please note that there are a few health concerns with using Green Tea.

Subj: I feel tired!
Date: 5/12/2009
Today is my first day on adipex. I took a half pill after breakfast, and the other half a few hrs after that. I feel tired! I’m going to continue for a week and hope that my energy regulates some how. I just kind of feel weird and could use a nap.

Jen

Subj: Affect on menses?
Date: 5/12/2009
Does adipex affect your menses, as in missing one?

Briana

AskDocWeb: While it is not one of the listed side effects of Adipex (2008 Physician’s Desk Reference) a few women have reported a difference in their menstrual cycle.

Subj: Glad to have adipex

Subj: Fainted for the first time
Date: 5/13/2009
I’ve been taking adipex for two weeks now and I do recreational drugs also. I fainted for the first time and I want to know is this because I did recreational drugs with the adipex or just the adipex by itself.

TM

AskDocWeb: Most people would agree that using recreational drugs with adipex or any other prescription drug is a bad idea. Please consider what would happen if you faint while driving. That could ruin more than just your whole day.

Subj: Lost 35 pounds in 3 months
Date: 5/18/2009
I took adipex for about 3 months and lost 35 pounds I still have about 20-25 more I would like to lose. Will it hurt if I continue to take it under the care of a doctor?

Heidi

AskDocWeb: The longer you use Adipex the more likely you are to develop a tolerance to it and when that happens it stops working. But don’t worry about that, there are several alternative drugs for weight loss.

Subj: Gained weight back
Date: 5/19/2009
What do I need to do? I’ve taken adipex and gained all my weight back plus 80 pounds.

Yosea

AskDocWeb: In order to take the weight off and keep it off, you have to make changes to your lifestyle and will take a lot of extra effort on your part. You may also need an attitude adjustment and that involves changing how you think about this problem. Although it is possible to use a drug as a crutch for awhile, that is only a temporary help and it does not do the job for you. It is up to you change what you eat, how much you eat, and the amount of physical activity you engage in every day. For example, if you think that you can’t exercise because you are too tired, you may have that thought backwards. The reason you are tired may be because you aren’t getting enough exercise. Once you get into exercising you will find that it lifts your mood and improves many areas of your life.

Subj: Skin sores
Date: 5/25/2009
I have been taking Adipex for about a month and have skin sores on my arms and back. I am almost positive this is from the Adipex. How should I treat these sores?

Kandi

AskDocWeb: The sores need to be evaluated by your health care provider in order know how to treat them.
