Subj: Adipex strange feeling
Date: 10/14/2009
I am liking the increased energy and being able to get things done, but I feel so strange, getting up from sitting down I feel like I might pass out, and I ‘feel’ out of breath sometimes even though I am not, you know what I mean? Also the toe next to my left pinky toe has a strange feeling- like it is moving, even though it is not. I have been on it for two days now. Tomorrow I am going to just take a 1/2 pill and see if that is any better. I am starting out at 185 at 5’9″ and my goal weight is 145, I am also on Topamax. Any advice?
Eve
AskDocWeb: For advice you have to ask a doctor. This website only deals with questions about side effects.
Subj: I am so thankful
Date: 10/16/2009
I have been taking Adipex for almost 2 months. I have lost 20 pounds and am halfway to my goal weight, but better than that my % body fat has dropped considerably. I don’t get tired at the gym any more and I don’t crave sugary foods at all! I initially took a whole tablet – for about 3 weeks, then started switching, 1 tab, no tab, 1/2 tab, etc so I wasn’t taking 1 tab every day. This has lessened both the side effects and hopefully my body’s dependence on the drug to keep metabolism up. My only side effect was a bad headache when I first stopped taking the whole tabs. Now I am fine and I am usually so worn out at the end of my day that I sleep great. My pressure is up a little (still well within normal), but my doctor made sure I had low blood pressure and heart rate prior to beginning this drug (also EKG, blood work) and made me stop caffeine intake entirely prior to writing the RX (caffeine constricts blood vessels causing elevation of blood pressure and can elevate heart rate too). I am so thankful. My doctor is such a good clinician and very conscientious.

Subj: Adipex while on prozac?
Date: 10/18/2009
My 17 year old daughter is on prozac for anxiety and depression. Is it safe to take adipex while on prozac.
Rhonda
AskDocWeb: Our database says there could be major problems if the two are mixed. Several case reports suggest that SSRIs may cause a pharmacologic response to sympathomimetic agents such as Adipex. In one case report, a patient experienced stomach cramps, jitteriness, racing thoughts, palpitations, tremors, dry eyes, and restlessness following a single dose of phentermine ingested approximately 1 week after she had discontinued prozac. Toxic reactions have been reported such as serotonin syndrome, which is a rare but serious and potentially fatal condition.
The symptoms of serotonin syndrome may include mental status changes such as irritability, altered consciousness, confusion, hallucinations, coma, autonomic dysfunction such as tachycardia, hyperthermia, diaphoresis, shivering, changes in blood pressure, neuromuscular abnormalities such as hyperreflexia, myoclonus, tremor, rigidity, and ataxia; and gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal cramping, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
Subj: Kidney problems
Date: 10/22/2009
I really want to warn all of you to be careful with this medication. If you start having kidney problems…please stop taking it and see your doctor. Also when I (and the majority of people I know that took Adipex) went off of it, we gained back what we had lost and extra. If you take this medication long enough you get a “look” about you. What I mean is, dark circles under the eyes, pale skin…etc. The only thing that has worked for me is moderate exercise and healthy eating. In my opinion this pill causes more trouble than it is worth.

Subj: Is this normal
Date: 10/23/2009
Hi. Yesterday was my first day with Adipex I took it before breakfast as my doctor adviced, ate a full breakfast in the morning, by 1pm I felt hyper and at times short of breath. However It did suppressed my hunger to the point where I dint want to eat at all, however I had another meal around 5pm, by 10pm I had extreamly painfull headaches, and felt like vomiting.. and I did two times, finally I feel asleep around 3am. Is this normal for the first day? Should I eat even if am not hungry? Thank you so much for your help.
Samantha
AskDocWeb: That does not sound like a typical first day for Adipex. Please check with your doctor.
Subj: Experiencing hair loss
Date: 10/26/2009
I am experiencing hair loss, although it’s not listed as a side effect this is the only routine medication I am taking. In a five month period I have lost over 35 pounds and love it, however I do not plan on wearing a wig. What can I do to regrow my hair? Please advise.
Bridgett
AskDocWeb: If your hair loss is caused by the drug then it should resume normal growth once the drug is discontinued. In the mean time take a look at Nisim NewHair Biofactors.

Subj: Horrible side effects
Date: 10/30/2009
I know several people who have had success with Adipex. I tried it a few years ago, without any success, but have decided to try again. I am losin weight after only 2 weeks on, but am having the horrible side effects. I am irratible, grouchy, and moody. I also think it makes me hot and sweat all the time. I have horrible dry throat and bad taste in my mouth which makes me want to eat to get rid of the taste. I don’t know how long I can keep taking it.

Subj: Scared about gaining weight back
Date: 10/31/2009
I have been taking Adipex for two months. I have lost 32 lbs. and like to exercise. I am scared that once I stop taking the pills I will gain back my weight. I know you must stick with lifestyle change, but is it possible that you can gain back the weight when you stop taking it?
Michelle
AskDocWeb: It is possible but just because something is possible does not mean that it is likely. Sticking with the lifestyle changes will make it even less likely.
Subj: Gained about 15 pounds back
Date: 11/4/2009
I was on adipex for 3 months–lost 21 pounds–my doctor says you can only take drug for 3 month period every 12 months–is that true? I have been off drug now for 4 months–gained about 15 pounds back! I even had to weigh in with him every month to ensure program and get new prescription–any help is appreciated.
Clayton
AskDocWeb: It sounds like the 3 month limit is true for you because your doctor sets the rules on what is safe for you to take. Please note that the drug is only one part of the weight loss program. You also have to make the required lifestyle changes in order to keep your weight under control.
Subj: Adipex does nothing for me
Date: 11/4/2009
I have been taking adipex two months now and I find that it does nothing for me. The first day or two I could tell a little difference in my energy and with me not wanting to eat but that quickly went away. I have been working out going on four months now and have lost a total of 22 pounds which is good to be losing but I think I should have lost more than that within that time span, especially with me taking adipex.
I workout at least 6 days a week I maybe miss one or two days a month and I work out for a total of up to two hours a day. I do cardio one day, then I do cardio and weight trainging the next day and so on and so forth in that pattern.
The first month of taking adipex and working out I found that I sweated more because I hardly ever sweat anyway, but now that too has stopped. Another thing I have just like most other people is dry mouth and it usually occurs only while working out. I drink water all the time and that is the only thing I ever drink besides when I have milk in my cereal. I’ve only lost seven pounds since being on adipex and before that I had lost fifteen pounds in one month.
I don’t know if anyone else had experienced that this medicine doesn’t work for them as well. I don’t understand what it is that is keeping me from losing weight or having the urge to eat but clearly the adipex isn’t helping me at all and my doctor even told me today that I was doing good and that I don’t want to lose the weight all at once. I knew that it wasn’t going to instantly melt away but you would think with all I have been doing and even eating like I should that I would see more results than what I have. The doctor even told me that I needed to workout at least 3-4 hours a day that 2 hours was not enough if I wanted to be losing more, I just thought that was ridiculous, I mean most people taking adipex don’t even workout and still lose the weight. Maybe with me there’s another underlying problem that I need to address, but with all I have experienced while taking adipex I would not recommend it. If any one had experienced anything I have please get my email and let me know anything that may help me.

Subj: Worked great, no side effects
Date: 11/9/2009
I too have taking adipex months ago, it worked great for me, there were no side effects. I took pills as soon as I woke up, took my vitamins, and tons of water. Being on adipex you have no choice but to drink water.

Subj: Best choice I have ever made
Date: 11/10/2009
I have been on Adipex and Topamax for a little over 3 months and I have lost 50lbs! Best choice I have ever made. I am also 23 and in pretty good health.
Tiffanie
AskDocWeb: Wow! Congratulation Tiffanie, good job.
Subj: Vitamin B12?
Date: 11/10/2009
Currently taking generic adipex. Works great only side effect is that I am sleepy all day. Instead of having the upper effect from this medication I have the opposite. Can I take B12 injections with it to give me some extra needed energy???
Kristie
AskDocWeb: It is not required but it is worth asking your doctor about it. Indirectly it can help you lose weight. Vitamin B12 injections help the body metabolize fats, carbohydrates and proteins, promotes calcium absorption, improves mood, and increases energy levels.
Subj: Prolonged use of diet pill not healthy
Date: 11/10/2009
I have been taking Adipex for 3 months. My doctor refuses to refill my prescription stating that prolonged use of a diet pill is not healthy. I asked her about a weaning off process but she stated that it is not necessary. What is the best way to wean myself off? Is there a recommended timeframe to take Adipex? Also, when I don’t take the pill I am extremely tired. Any suggestions?
Jacqueline
AskDocWeb: The length of time you can safely take Adipex is set by your doctor, it varies from one person to the next. When stopping abruptly following a prolonged use of a high dosage, patients report extreme fatigue and mental depression, which lasts about one week. If the dosage is not high and prolonged then this does not occur.
