Subj: Kidney problems
Date: 10/4/2010
I’m 22 years old, and was perfectly healthy prior to taking Adipex. I took it for a little less than three months, and have had serious kidneys since. The doctor at first thought it to be a kidney stone, but they aren’t sure because the pain has been off and on for months. I’m going back to the doctor for more tests soon. I felt great while on Adipex, but it’s not worth what I’m going through now. Terrible pain, worsened by pop.

AskDocWeb: The amount of time that it takes for the body to build up a tolerance varies with the individual. If you think it has stopped working then it is time to check back with your doctor. Your best advice will come from your personal physician, who is familiar with your situation.

My starting weight was 298 WOW!!! and now im still just 284. can someone tell me if me being that weight before and losing just 11 pounds is ok?

AskDocWeb: Congratulation on moving in the right direction. The fact that you are losing weight is proof of that. It is more than okay, we call that making progress. Keep up the good work.
Subj: Lots of dizziness
Date: 11/28/2010
Hi! I’ve been on Phentermine for 9 days now and I am NOT having the decreased appetite or the increased energy, but what I am having is lots of dizziness and my head feels cloudy. After reading some of the comments, I am surprised to learn that it can increase BP, which I have always ran borderline, but never been on meds for it and also I’m on Zoloft. My doctor prescribed this med for me, but never informed me of these issues. Could any of this be causing the dizziness? And is it possible that it will go away after awhile? I have been trying to lose weight for years and I am stuck at a certain weight and cannot get below it no matter what I do, so I need the extra help and would hate to just quit. Help Please!!
Danielle
AskDocWeb: The patient information for Phentermine says that dizziness is one of the possible side effects of this drug and that it should be reported to your doctor. Hopefully your doctor warned you about the possible drug interaction with Phentermine when using Zoloft.
Subj: Headaches
Date: 11/29/2010
I have been using Adipex 15 for two days. I have been having slight headaches for most of the days. My doctor says it will subside when I get used to the med. Any thoughts?
Marie
AskDocWeb: Some side effects are the result of your body adjusting to the medication. These typically go away within two weeks.
Subj: I’m 17
Date: 12/6/2010
Do you have to be 18 years old to be prescribed Apidex? I’m 17 and have a BMI of 35.9 so I would really like to try this.
Katie
AskDocWeb: Adipex is not recommended for children under 16 so that may be a possibility. You have to consult with your doctor to find out if it would be safe for your situation.
Subj: Heart palpitations
Date: 12/7/2010
I took adipex about five years ago for around three months, I remember having heart palpations for the first time while on the course of this medication. In the past five years I have felt the same palpations but it wasnt until the last five months or so that they started daily. They are becoming very disturbing and scary. Are heart palpations a long lasting side effect of this medication, what do you know about valve dysfunction related to the use of this medication?
Ashley
AskDocWeb: Adipex may cause a constriction or shrinking of the blood vessels in the lungs. When these blood vessels shrink blood can back up in the lungs and into the heart. This results in shortness of breath and possibly chest pain depending on the severity of pulmonary hypertension. Medical care should be sought for this condition. As a general rule, we believe that any side effect that becomes disturbing or scary should be discussed with a doctor.
Subj: Cotton mouth, constipation, Diarrhea, cramping
Date: 12/22/2010
My starting weight was 216.4 and I am 5’9″. I started taking Adipex 37.5 on 8/26/10. I felt great the first month only experiencing cotton mouth, and lost 14 lbs. The second month I started having some tummy problems(constipation, Diarrhea, cramping) but lost another 11 lbs. The third month my BP and pulse started fluctuating, bottoming out then coming back up to normal. Dr. said this was from dehydration. I dropped down half way thru the month to taking 1/2 pill. I lost 6 lbs. This last was my 4th month, and I have taken 1/2 a pill a day and I have lost another 5 lbs. I haven’t had any of the side effects since dropping down to 1/2 pill.
I am hoping the dr. will let me have one more 30 day Rx so I can taper down more over the next 2 months I still have 20lbs I would like to lose. I am at 180 now. I fractured my ankle the 2 week taking it so no exercise, can’t imagine what I would be at if i could do all the things I feel up to doing! After reading the above comments, I realize i have been rather snarky…Thought it was just my DH and DS’s being overly annoying the last 4 months…..My bad!

Subj: Exercise is the key
Date: 12/24/2010
I’d lost 52lbs using Adipex while taking the med. I experience sweating, dry mouth, sleepliness, jitteriness but it wasn’t too bothersome. It curbed my appetite but I made sure I ate 3 meals a day and drunk 64oz of water per day & walked 2 miles 5 days a week. I stopped the med & it has been extremely difficult to keep the weight off which is mainly my fault because I’ve stopped exercising like I should. With me exercise is the key.

Subj: Tolerance to Adipex
Date: 12/29/2010
I started taking Adipex March 2009. I lost 35 pounds pretty quickly, but then saw my weight loss come to a hault after about 6 months. I continued taking the Adipex for another 6 months and was able to sustain the 35 pound loss (but not lose anything additional). I decided to stop taking it about 6 months ago and have gained 25 pounds back (even though I joined weight watchers and got a personal trainer). Is it inevitable that I gained this weight back just because I stopped taking the pill? Would I be able to jump start my weight loss goals if I started to take the Adipex again for a few months or would I still have a tolerance to it? Please help!
Rosie
AskDocWeb: Your body may be able to recover some ability to respond to Adipex but the medication is unlikely to work as well as it did originally.
Subj: Citalopram
Date: 12/29/2010
I started taking Adipex about two weeks ago. I didn’t realize I shouldn’t take Citalopram with it. I quit taking Citalopram (celexa) because I was afraid of the interaction. Now I’m thinking that I should have quit the Adipex. I have not had any problems but have recently read a lot about the serotonin syndrome. If I stop the Adipex now, how long do I have to wait to start the citalopram back up?
Jennifer
AskDocWeb: That decision should be made by your doctor. Remember that you doctor needs to know about every prescription drug you are taking in order to avoid those that have adverse drug interactions.
Subj: Best way to wean off Adipex
Date: 1/12/2011
Hi. I was prescribed adipex from my doctor and i’ve had great results so far. Been on it going on my 2nd week and I’ve went down from 182 to 174. I train 4 times a week and do cardio almost everyday. I was told that this was a great way jumpstart to my weight loss, but now im hearing its hard to get off of this pill. After my month is up what is the best way to wean myself off the pill?
Ursula
AskDocWeb: If you stop taking Adipex suddenly you may experience extreme tiredness, mental depression, trouble sleeping, irritability, or mental, mood, or personality changes. The best way to wean off of Adipex is by first consulting your doctor and then following that medical advice.
Subj: Too jittery
Date: 1/14/2011
My doctor recommended that I cut the 37.5 mg pill in half. I’ve done this and also skipped days but it seems to be too much. Meaning too jittery, cant sleep. Can I cut the pill in 3 pieces and have it still be effective?
Anne
AskDocWeb: You can certainly talk to your doctor about that but know that Adipex does come in 3 different dosages: 15mg, 20mg and 37.5mg.
Subj: Numbness on one-side of the body
Date: 1/15/2011
I have been taking Adipex for a little over a year now…I have lost over 50lbs…I count my calories and try to exercise at least 3 times a week…I have tired going off of Adipex (around 9 months into it) but I start to gain pounds (It is like I obsess about what I’m going to eat next when I’m not on it.) which sent me back to the doctor…I’m afraid of becoming obese again…After having my son I had a hard time motivating. Adipex gave me the extra energy to exercise, move more, and focus less on what I wanted to eat next… It allows me to be the mom I want to be…My only fear is that last night I experienced some numbness in my left hand… So, I’m a little concerned and will be seeking my doctor’s guidance…Numbness on one-side of the body is listed under serious side effects… Although, I’m a little surprised because I was under the assumption that if a side effect was going to occur it would usually happens after the first month or two of use…
Jane
AskDocWeb: Just because something usually happens does not mean that it happens every time. Although side effects are most likely to show up soon after a medication is started, they can appear anytime. This is also true of allergic reactions.
