Subj: Constipation
Date: 4/13/2011
I have been taking adipex for about 10 days .. and i love it.. but i have been struggling with constipation, something I had never had a problem with before. i walk 2-3 ml day.. i drink lots of water and eat healthy.. what can i take?
Maia
AskDocWeb: People have different definitions for constipation. For many people it means infrequent stools. However, for others constipation means hard stools, difficulty passing stools (straining), or a sense of incomplete emptying after a bowel movement. Whatever your definition here are a few simple home remedies for constipation.
- Add more fruits and vegetables to your diet.
- Drink 2 to 4 extra glasses of water each day (unless fluid restricted).
- Drink warm liquids, especially in the morning.
- Eat bran cereal.
- Eat prunes.
If you use a stool softener or laxative make sure it is very mild (such as Peri-Colace or Milk of Magnesia). Do not use laxatives for more than two weeks without calling your doctor because the overuse of laxative can aggravate your symptoms.
Call your doctor if you have any of the following warning signs:
- blood in your stool
- constipation has lasted more than two weeks
- constipation is a new problem for you
- losing weight even though you are not dieting
- severe pain with bowel movements
Subj: Tongue swelling
Date: 4/14/2011
I have used Adipex in the past. And recently I started taking it again. I have an event in June that I’m wanting to drop 20 Pds for. Adipex has worked for me before and is working now. But, I am having a few problems. Of course like many I can not sleep. My head is always throbbing on the left temple. But, what I’m not sure of is if Adipex is causing my tongue to swell? And, seems as if my glands on my tongue is swollen in areas. I’m not sure if it’s due to adipex or not? Is it?
A
AskDocWeb: There is no way to know until you get it checked out. Swelling and severe headache are listed as serious side effects that should be reported to your doctor immediately. A throbbing temple may be a sign of dangerously high blood pressure.
Subj: Urgency to urinate, dry mouth, and liver function
Date: 4/15/2011
I love adipex this is my 3rd round. I’m not hungry and have lots of energy. I also have feelings of extreme happiness which is a little strange. The 2nd time I took adipex it made me crazy I wanted to kill someone and the 1st time I had no side effects. It’s been two week and I’ve lost 19 lbs the only issue I have ever had it urgency to urinate/dry mouth and my liver function was elivated so make sure you monitor that with a CMP.

Subj: Permanent change in metabolism?
Date: 4/16/2011
I was curious; does one’s metabolism change permanently if I have taken Adipex for quite sometime and now off of it? Or any prescription weight loss drug for that matter? Permanent alter or effect how my metabolism works after adipex/Bontril/Didrex for example? Thank you!
RJ
AskDocWeb: Metabolism is a series of complex processes that allow you to adept to your environment. When you exercise, your metabolism speeds up and after the exercise, your metabolism returns to the state that is normal for you. None of the diet drugs currently available have a permanent effect on the metabolism of adults.
Subj: Thesis for medical school
Date: 4/18/2011
hi, i am a medicine student and for my thesis i am interested in possible side effect of phentermine like an amphetamine. does it causes in patient ipereccitability or give a sensation of “energy” in users? in particular i read that phentermine is used in association with topiramate (topamax) a anti epilepsia and migraine drug that has among its side effects also appetite suppression and inhibition of SNC. I want to know if the “amphetamine” effect of adipex are suppressed by Topiramate and if this is the cause of this effective combination. i’m interested also in clinical cases and opinion. thanks. ASAP!!!!
Jackwalla
AskDocWeb: It does stimulate the nervous system like an amphetamine. You are welcome to note the comments made by those using this drug but you will have to do your own research.
Subj: HIV meds?
Date: 4/21/2011
Is it okay that someone on HIV meds take Adipex too?
New York City
AskDocWeb: It might be a possibility. We found no drug-drug interaction between Adipex and most of the drugs used to treat HIV, for example Truvada, Reyataz, Norvir, tenofovir (Viread) or emtricitabine. However, if you are taking something else then you would need to check for possible drug interactions. Of course you would have to talk to your doctor to find out if Adipex would be appropriate for your particular situation.
Subj: Stomach cramps and dry mouth
Date: 4/26/2011
I have been taking adipex for the past week now. In the beginning I felt great, but now I am getting stomach cramps and dry mouth. Is there anything that would help ease these side effects at all?
Danielle
AskDocWeb: Stomach cramps are one of the symptoms that should be reported to your doctor. Treating abdominal pain or stomach cramps depends on its cause. These include:
- Appendicitis
- Constipation
- Crohn’s disease
- Endometriosis
- Food allergies
- Food poisoning
- Gallstones
- Gas
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
- Hernia
- Indigestion
- Kidney stones
- Lactose intolerance
- Medication
- Menstrual cramps
- Pelvic inflammatory disease
- Stomach “flu”
- Ulcers
- Urinary tract infection
Typically dry mouth is a sign that you need to drink more water.
Subj: Need to loose 80lbs!
Date: 4/26/2011
have high blood pressure, need to loose 80lbs! Would it be safe to use adipex?
Amber
AskDocWeb: Sorry Amber, according to the patient information for this medicine, it is not recommended if you have a history of high blood pressure. Other conditions that may rule out the use of Adipex include heart conditions, brain or spinal cord disorders, atherosclerosis, glaucoma, and hyperthyroidism.
Subj: Blood pressure
Date: 4/28/2011
Does your blood pressure go back down when you stop taking this medication? if so – when??
Dyna
AskDocWeb: Yes, once the drug is discontinued the blood pressure does return to what it was previous to using the medication. Since the half-life of Adipex ranges from 16 to 31 hours, it can take several days for the drug to clear your system.
A “half-life” is the time it takes for the body to rid itself of half of the drug. After five half-lives the amount of drug remaining in the body is not likely to have any clinically significant effect.
Here is a simple table that shows the percentage of drug eliminted from the body for different half-lives.
Half-lives | Amount of drug |
1 | 50% |
2 | 75% |
3 | 87.5% |
4 | 93.75% |
5 | 96.875% |
6 | 98.474% |
7 | 99.25% |
If you are concerned about how long a side effect may last, there is an easy way to estimate that. Multiply the half-life by 5 and you get the maximum number of hours that you can expect the side effects to last. After that the drug should no longer have any effect on your body.
Please note: If you have kidney or liver problems it may take more time for a drug to clear your system. Any side effects that do persist should be reported to your doctor.
Subj: What can I do to get more weight to come off?
Date: 5/2/2011
I’ve been taking apidex-p for just over a year now the results have been great, I’m near my goal of 128-124 pounds(I’m 5 feet), side effects are kinda bad insomnia, dry mouth, scatter brain, hair loss etc. but it’s coming off a lot slower than before,(1-2 or 0 pounds a month) before it was 5-10 pounds a mouth, I think I’m going to a plateau. what other workouts, can I do to get more weight to come off? and how can I get my hair to grow back?
Mmm
AskDocWeb: When a diet drug stops working it is time to check back with your doctor evaluate your progress. In most cases, getting your hair to grow back is easy when the hair loss is caused by a medication. Discontinuing the drug usually results in the hair growth returning to normal within three months.
There are many areas to explore to get more weight to come off. Here are a few things to consider changing that could help:
- changes in diet (the specific foods you eat)
- the thermic effect of the food you eat
- the fiber content of the food you eat
- the glycemic and insulin indices of the food you eat
- the nutritional content of the food you eat
- the number of daily calories consumed
- changes in shopping habits (never shop when hungry)
- learn to conquer cravings
- the size, frequency and timing of the meals you eat
- a new set of dishes (smaller plates)
- reduce your stress level
- avoid eating anything 30 minutes before exercising
- adding micronutrients (calcium, green tea, vitamins B6 and B12)
- increase water intake (2 cups before each meal)
That last one may seem too simple but it does result in weight loss. Try it and let us know how it goes.
Subj: Topamax and Adipex?
Date: 5/6/2011
I am needing to lose about 30 -35 lbs. My normal wt is 120-125 but I was on steroids awihle back for a back issue and gained weight. I just joined a gym and today I saw a Dr who gave me RX for adipex. I do take topamax at night for hormonal migraines, is this safe to take with the adipex. The Dr was in and out so fast I barely had a sec to ask any questions. Also, with the adipex how long before I should see any results starting to creep in?
DK
AskDocWeb: We didn’t find any drug interactions listed between Topamax and Adipex but remember, it is always a good idea to check with your pharmacist when getting the prescription filled. The results of weight loss that you can see on a scale typically begin in the first week.
