Subj: Excruciating pain in mouth
Date: 5/6/2011
I was wondering if anybody body else experiences pain in the roof of there mouth when they eat.. I have been taking adipex for a couple of days and when I eat the roof of mouth has excruciating pain and it sometimes hurts to swallow also when eating

Chelsea

AskDocWeb: Please consult with your doctor. Most of the reports of oral symptoms have to do with dry mouth but there are a few about unpleasant taste, cotton mouth, excess production of saliva, burning pain and swelling on the insides of lips.

Subj: Adipex and heart burn
Date: 5/8/2011
I have taken addipex on and off for the last few years. I love addipex. I lost 25 lbs on it. The last time I tried to take it again I had horrible heart burn with it. Ive had heartburn for 10yrs now so thats not unusual for me. Im on prescription medication for it. But the heartburn seems to be way worse. Any suggestions for me?

Jaylynn

AskDocWeb: The simplest solution to minor heartburn for many is to chew gum. Chewing gum can relieve heartburn because it stimulates the production of saliva, which is an acid buffer that facilitates better digestion. Of course if the heartburn interferes with your daily activities then consult with your doctor.

Subj: Lack of weight loss?
Date: 5/10/2011
Hello,I am a 41 yr. old female. I have been taking adipex for a month today. I take one pill before breakfast every morning. I am 5’3. I eat 1200 calories a day very low fat diet, and workout 3-4 times a week. I have only lost 6 lbs. I dont understand why I havent lost anymore than that. I do have alot of energy and low appetite. What reason could there be for this lack of weight loss?

Tessa

AskDocWeb: Have you checked your Body Mass Index to see if you are a good candidate for this drug? Adipex is most effective for those with a BMI of 30 or more. However, due to differences in physiology the range of results varies widely from one person to the next. If it isn’t working for you then check back with your doctor. He or she may have additional suggestions or may want to try an alternative medication.

Subj: GNC Sport Vitapack?
Date: 5/12/2011
Can I take adipex with the gnc sport vitapack?

Bobby

AskDocWeb: There may be a problem with some of the ingredients because their advertisement says that it “Increases energy levels” which sounds like stimulants. Talk to your doctor before taking any other stimulants with Adipex.

Subj: Constipated and internal hemorrhoids
Date: 5/13/2011
I have been taking adipex for 3 months and have lost 31 lbs. I feel so much better now but a month ago I started to get constipated. I took stool softeners for a week and finally used the bathroom…it was like laboring a child! I went to my doctor and she said I probably had internal hemorrhoids. It got better with time but today I was bleeding again when I used the bathroom. What do I need to do to make sure I completely heal?

Frustrated

AskDocWeb: That depends on what needs to heal and how bad it is now. Your doctor will be able to tell you that. And in the future you might consider doing something about constipation before it gets that bad.

Subj: I’m feeling frustrated.
Date: 5/15/2011
On April 2nd of 2011 I started my lifestyle change..I hate calling it a diet. My doctor prescribed these pills and I started taking them. I noticed the first few days I was getting headaches and thought it was from the pills so I stopped taking them. I weighed 274lbs and as of May 14th 2011 i’m down to 260. At first I wasn’t always hungry, but towards the end of April I started constantly starving before bed. I tried to deal with it, but it kept me awake so I ate something very small.

I started back up on the pills and it’s been 3 days and I’m constantly hungry. I don’t have anymore headaches, but today I started talking a mile a minute and was hyper. I didn’t know that was a side effect. For breakfast I have the atkins shake and then atkins granola bar for snack. I make my own lunch like ham sandwich w/strawberries. Then have an atkins granola bar for snack and for dinner have chicken or pork chop with steamed veggies.

I know you’re supposed to wait 3 hours after you eat before going to bed. Well an hour after dinner I was starving so I had a celery stick with a lil peanut butter and 16oz of water. I felt full, but still had the starving feeling. Am I not eating enough? I have 5 meals a day.

I don’t feel this pill is working and I started right away doing the whole pill. I take it an hour before breakfast. What am I doing wrong? I’ve lost 14lbs so far without this pill so how am I always starving? I exercise 20 minutes everyday and drink at least 64oz a water a day. I’m feeling frustrated.

Anna

AskDocWeb: Feeling frustrated is your body’s way of letting you know that what you are doing is not working and it is time to do something else. Typically this involves one of three choices: change your approach, adjust your expectations, or change your goal. Since your goal to lose weight is probably worth achieving, that leaves one of the first two, which means talking to your doctor.

Subj: Heartburn
Date: 5/15/2011
I have taken adipex a few years ago with great success. I lost 30 lbs, had high energy, and was always in a great mood. The only side effect was dry mouth. I went on it again and had horrible acid coming up my throat causeing heart burn. Went to dr and they said I needed gallbladder out. After I had gallbladder i was excited to start on adipex again.

It has been almost a year since I had it out but now the addipex gives me horrible heart burn and a lump fellin in throat. I have had so many test on stomach, throat you name Ive had that test. Everything came backe good. I can only take a half a pill a day and still have heart burn. Could it have something to do with having gallbladder out. Please help. I want to continue to take it.

Jaylynn

AskDocWeb: Heartburn is not listed as one of the possible side effects of Adipex. However, it is possible to have more than one problem at the same time so check with your doctor.

Subj: Could wine stop me from losing weight?
Date: 5/16/2011
Alcohol I have been taking xenical for over 2 weeks now and have reduced my fat intake significantly and thankfully do not have many side effects but I have lost no weight at all though continue to have a few glasses of wine most evenings….could the wine alone be enough to stop me loosing the weight do you think?

Lilly

AskDocWeb: It would be helpful if you were to be more specific about the number of glasses of wine. How many is a few? And how many ounces are in each glass? Is it 4 oz, 5 oz, or 8 ounces? You have to get specific about that in order to count the calories, which for wine can range from 62 to 160 calories per glass. Two, three, or more drinks can add up to a lot of calories really fast. Some people have noticed that if they have more than one 4-ounce glass of wine a day that their weight loss stalls out, even if the calories are kept the same.

According to the USDA you should only consume empty calories from sugar and alcohol after you have met your daily nutrient needs. The remaining calories, or what the USDA calls “discretionary calories,” can be used on alcohol. If you are not physically active, your discretionary calorie allowance may be very small. To determine how many discretionary calories you can consume each day without gaining weight consult with a nutritionist.

Warning: Drinking alcohol may produce significant negative effects if you are:

  • pregnant
  • trying to become pregnant
  • taking medications that can interact with alcohol
  • have been diagnosed with alcoholism or alcohol abuse
  • have liver disease
  • have pancreatic disease
  • have heart failure or a weak heart
  • have had a previous hemorrhagic stroke
  • are planning to drive

Also it’s not just the calories. Alcohol affects the levels of hormones like leptin that help regulate your weight and metabolism. Even 1 drink can affect Leptin.

Subj: Can I use Adipex?
Date: 5/24/2011
I am about 5″2 and i weigh 150 lbs….i was wondering if i maybe would most likely be approved by a doctor to be put on adipex?

Sabrina

AskDocWeb: According to the Panel on Energy, Obesity, and Body Weight Standards published by American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, your BMI is 27, which means that you are at increased risk for a variety of illnesses at your present weight. Adipex is approved for treating people with a BMI of 30 or greater, or 27 and up if you have other risk factors.

Subj: Hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism?
Date: 5/24/2011
I was thinking of getting on adipex, but I have hypothyroidism (over active thyroid) I was wondering if it would be safe for me to take this.

Kara

AskDocWeb: Hypothyroidism is an endocrine disorder resulting from a deficiency of thyroid hormone. That means your thyroid is underactive. If your thyroid were over active you would have hyperthyroidism.

There are two kinds of obesity; endogenous obesity and exogenous obesity. Endogenous obesity is caused by an identifiable medical condition, such as hypothyroidism. Exogenous obesity is caused by eating too much and exercising too little. Adipex is meant to treat exogenous obesity, which means that it is not meant to treat obesity due to a known medical cause.
