Subj: Terrible migraines and suicidal thoughts
Date: 6/14/2011
My doctor put me on adipex a year ago for 2 months. I did fantastic. I lost 30 pounds, had more energy, and kept it up for months after I quit taking it. Recently, I started gaining weight again and my doctor wanted me to try it again. I’ve been on it for about 4 days. I have been suffering terrible migraines and I am having crazy, suicidal thoughts. My mind won’t stop running and I honestly feel like I’m losing control of myself. Could this be the adipex or is something really wrong with me? I just don’t understand why the same medication would have two completely different results for me.

AskDocWeb: Your body changes over time and as everyone finds out eventually, not all change is good for you. Severe headaches and unusual thoughts are considered severe side effects that should be reported to your doctor immediately.

Subj: Develop a tolerance to Adipex?
Date: 6/18/2011
I have been using Adipex for just over a week, most of the side effects have been minimal. I would like to continue on this drug but have a big presentation for work and want to be as calm and clear headed as possible. If I were to go off Adipex for a week and then resume treatment, would my body develop a tolerence to the drug?

Miranda

AskDocWeb: A tolerance may develop from continual use over time but not from discontinuing use. The longer the drug is used the more likely the body is to develop a tolerance for it.

Subj: Colon cleanse pills with Adipex?
Date: 6/18/2011
Can you take colon cleanse pills with adpex?

Sunshine

AskDocWeb: One of the problems with colon cleansers is that they can lead to dehydration. If you read the feedback about Adipex you will see many references to the importance of increasing the amount of water consumed while dieting. Please talk to your doctor before combining any supplement with a prescription drug.

Subj: More side effects on the second try
Date: 6/21/2011
In 2007 I took adipex for 3 months. It worked great for me! I was taking a PE class in school so my exercise came in there, but I wasn’t too picky about what I ate. I cut out all soda and things high in sugars and calories. Over the course of three years I gained it back. Off and on I have tried to lose it.

December 2010 I got serious about losing. Started working out constantly and watched what I was eating. Helped some, but the weight just wasn’t coming off. So my doctor checked my thyroid and BP. All systems were go. I started taking the pill on the 13th. I am experiencing all sorts of side effects ( first time just dry mouth and insomnia) that I didn’t before. Also, it has been a week and I have been eating right and exersising every day, yet I have lost nothing. Will I see results in a few weeks? Or should I go off the pill and continue solo? Thank you!

Savannah

AskDocWeb: There are too many factors that go into a successful weight loss program, which makes it impossible to predict results for any one person. For example eating right means different things to different people. Here are some of the definitions of eating right that we’ve come across:

  • Eating right means eating six nutritious meals a day.
  • It means that most of your carbs are COMPLEX carbs.
  • Eating right means eating regular meals of the right portions.
  • Eating right means getting rid of fatty foods and lowering your caloric intake.
  • It means that eating fresh foods that provide the nutrition our bodies need.
  • Eating right means not overeating.
  • Eating right means living on vegetables and giving up fast food.
  • Eating right means avoiding processed foods.
  • It means that eating foods that are high in fiber.
  • Eating right means the right quantity and the correct quality.
  • Eat meat and vegetables, nuts, seeds, fruit, little starch, and no sugar, keeping the amounts at a level that supports exercise but not body fat.

Obviously some of the above definitions are more successful than others are at helping to lose weight. We favor the last one. If you aren’t sure if you are eating right or not, have a dietitian review your diet.

Also eating right doesn’t count if you’re over eating your calorie maintenance level. As long as the number of calories you consume is greater than the number of calories you use every day, it’s almost impossible to lose weight. When you burn more calories than you consume then you lose weight.

Subj: Hot flashes
Date: 6/26/2011
Well I just started Adipex today. I weigh 233 and I am only 5 feet tall. I know I know, WAY TOO MUCH! I had a total hysterectomy last year and I am in menopause and on HRT with Estradiol 2 mg. I took the pill this morning and my hot flashes are back and I am sweating which is insane as it is only 65 in my house, true menopause temp for a house. LOL. I am also soooo thirsty! Has anyone in my position experienced this? I am only 31 just FYI.

Celia

AskDocWeb: Although hot flashes are not in the listed side effects there have been a few posts about that. However, thirst is common when using this medication. Excessive sweating is less common but not unusual. It sounds like Adipex is really having an effect on you. Hopefully you will be able to make the lifestyle changes to diet and activity level to support your efforts.

Subj: What can I take that’s similar to Adipex?
Date: 6/27/2011
I am allergic to adipex it causes me to have extreme dry mouth, raw tongue, and lick my teeth as well as extreme constipation. What can I take that’s similar?

DREA

AskDocWeb: One problem with using a drug similar to Adipex is that it may also have similar side effects. And since we are talking about a prescription drug you will have to consult with your doctor about what would be safe and appropriate for your particular situation. Note that constipation often results from not drinking enough water.

Subj: Great drug to help with weight management
Date: 7/1/2011
Hey I work at a medical clinic and we have a few patients on ADIPEX 37.5MG, alot of patients say its a great drug to help with the weight management, I’ve been trying to lose weight for a while now so I went to my doctor and wanted to get evaluated for Adipex. I’m 4’11 and weigh 172lbs. I started Adipex on June 30, 2011. I did feel that it gave me alot of energy, everything is good so far I haven’t recorded my weight yet i want to wait until the end of the month, the side effects that i feel are not to the extreme but dry mouth, appetite is cut down which is a good thing right? and restless at night, but besides that everything so far is great!!! I have nothing bad to say about Adipex…I do walk the a mile on the treadmill some days and I’m trying to balance my self on a diet plan…I really haven’t been hungry but your body needs its nutrients and calories..so I will manage.

Subj: Adipex horror story
Date: 7/15/2011
My boyfriends horror story He has used Adipex off and on for years. I did not know this when I met him a year ago. He was even so addicted that he asked me to go to the diet doctor to get it for him. He is not over weight at all and only uses it for energy…dumb right.

I am a fitness specialist and this makes me crazy. When I refused to get it for him, he just got someone else to do it. Well, this last Monday while on the phone with him he suffered a severe seizure. Only because I was talking to him did he get help in time. When he fell he hit a weight rack and was bleeding from the head by the time I got to his house. I had to call 911. During the emergency room stay, he had a second massive seizure which kept him in the hospital for a couple of days. They ran c.t. scans etc. He was also found to be anemic. His doctor said that it was most likely caused by the use of adipex.

This is a warning to those of you using it. I can tell you that it scared the living day lights out of me. If you can believe it he was not even phased by it and still plans to use it even though his doctor now has him on an anti-seizure med. Wake up people…it doesn’t come in a bottle or we would all look perfect. It is going to take a lifestyle change. So pull up your boots and get to work. I hope this will be enough to get some of you people off of this drug. Good luck to you all.

Subj: Urgency incontinence
Date: 7/20/2011
I have a tiny (at 4 oz it feels as if I’m about to bust and it was tested for this level) bladder, and on top of that, it’s overactive and I have urgency incontinence. I take (or took before the Adipex) Ditropan and an anti-depressant for anxiety due to the sense of urgency always being there. I have noticed, however, that when I take Adipex, that sense of urgency disappears! Please tell me why, and if there is a natural remedy that matches the effect Adipex gives? I hate living with this, and know that I can’t stay on Adipex just for this purpose, but love the effect of not having the sense of urgency or bladder spasms I normally have. Thanks in advance!!

Hog Fan

AskDocWeb: Although not considered a cure for bladder spasms, horsetail, also known as equisetum or marestail, is a popular natural remedy that may provide some degree of relief for bladder spasms and urinary incontinence. Horsetail contains silica, which helps maintain collagen and acts as a urinary astringent and reduces muscle spasms. The antispasmodic effects of this herb make it useful in reducing urinary leakage and involuntary muscle contractions.

Another natural remedy for improving bladder function is the use of kegel exercises. According to Medline Plus, these exercises strengthen the pelvic floor muscles, which in turn improves the strength of the urethral sphincter. These exercises can significantly improve bladder function within four to six weeks. As with all medical care, consult your doctor before using any home remedies, especially when prescription medications are involved.

Subj: Erectile dysfunction and Adipex
Date: 7/22/2011
I have been taking adipex for about 10 days now and I am experiencing some erectile dysfuntion. Will this side effect go away once I stop taking the medication?

Anthony

AskDocWeb: Drug induced erectile dysfunction caused by Adipex has been reported to clear up within three days after discontinuing. Adipex-P has been documented to have the potential to produce sexual difficulties in men, both impotence and erectile dysfunction. Additionally, this drug may decrease the desire for sex in both men and women. If these side effects do occur and become worrisome, consult your doctor as to a course of action that can be taken to reduce these adverse reactions.
