Is it possible to lose 20lbs in 3 weeks?
Date: 10/14/2011
I started taking Adipex about 3 days ago and it has did anything so far with my weight. The 1st day I was full of energy and not hungry at all. The 2nd day I couldnt sleep at all. I tossed and turned all night. The 3rd day I was constantly hungry. I drink my share of water but still have a dry mouth. I also eat my veggies and fruits and try to work 3 times a week. I need to lose at least 20lbs in the next 3 weeks. Do you think this is possible?
Shun
AskDocWeb: While it is “possible” to lose 20 pounds in three weeks that doesn’t mean that it would be a good idea. The problem with that is, the faster you lose weight, the more likely you are to gain the weight back after discontinuing the pills. As far as we can tell, the patients that had the best long-term success with losing weight lost only a pound or two per week.
I feel that it doesn’t curb my appetite
Date: 10/19/2011
I have been taking adipex for about 3 months. I have also gone back to Weight Watchers the whole time I’ve been taking the medicine. I’m not sure how much it works for me. It is suppose to curb your appetite. I don’t feel that it does that for me. Has anyone else experienced that? By 4:00 I am famished. My doctor had me take it around 10 a.m. to see if that would help. No go. I feel that it doesn’t curb my appetite but when I eat I do eat less. Before each meal I am starved.

Is there anything I can do for more energy?
Date: 10/19/2011
I have been taking adapex for 2 weeks. Start weight was 204, now I am at 195. The first week was great, lots of energy. But now I seem to have NO ENERGY. It takes all I’ve got to get off a chair. I haven’t seen much weight lose and have been on a low carb diet (60 carbs/day) since I started taking the pill. Is there anything I can do to give myself more energy without going off my diet?
Jennifer
AskDocWeb: Have you considered using a B12 supplement or B-12 shots? When combined with a healthy diet and exercise program, extra B-12 can make a world of difference in your energy. Your doctor would administer the B-12 shots once a week but just taking a B12 supplement without the shot may help.
Update from Debbie
Date: 10/24/2011
Hey all, Debbie here, I started Adipex a little over a month ago and blogged, whelp, here I am 5 weeks later and I went from 180 to today’s weigh in at 167.4. I am still taking the multivitamin and B12 and yes exercising daily, whether it’s a walk or a full work out, I do it! I am also on levelthyroxcin for my thyroid and it doesn’t seem to affect it at all! See you in a month.

I gain the weight back
Date: 10/24/2011
This is my third time taking adipex 37.5 (generic for phentermine) and I have had great results every time….the only thing is I gain back all my weight every time I go off of it. When I go off adipex I am really hungry and no energy to work out! Should I wean off this time or how should I keep off my weight after stopping medicine?
Jessie
AskDocWeb: Adipex has the potential for psychological dependency so talk to your doctor about how best to discontinue use. How well you do at keeping it off depends on the lifestyle changes you make to your diet and activity level while you are using this medication. Adipex is supposed to make it easier to make those changes.
Are there age related complications with Adipex?
Date: 10/26/2011
I’m about to start adipex today and honestly very excited & nervous after reading everyones posts! I’m 39, 5`5 and about 198#, I want to loose around 40-50 lbs over the next 3-4 months. Is it safe to be taking this pill at my age and are you at a higher risk for any complications at my age? I am a single mother now ( husband passed suddenly few yrs back) and don’t want to take this pill if it may have more risks involved at my age. Thanks.
Jay
AskDocWeb: Granted that there are risks involved with taking any prescription medication. However, there are also risks from being overweight. Part of your doctor’s job is to weigh the known benefits of using this medication against the potential risks. Your doctor will not prescribe Adipex unless the benefits outweigh the risks.
With that said, there are two serious risks that you may want to discuss with your doctor, valvular heart disease and pulmonary hypertension. The first is a condition that inhibits blood flow within and from the heart, which may result in congestive heart failure. Pulmonary hypertension is characterized by high blood pressure in the arteries that supply the lungs. When the arterial walls thicken the arteries can’t carry enough blood to the lungs. This causes the heart to work harder to force more blood through. If the lungs don’t receive enough blood, it could cause dizziness, shortness of breath and possibly death.
So far it has worked great
Date: 10/31/2011
This is my second week on Adipex and so far I have lost 18 pounds. When I started the pills I weighed 227 pds and my goal weight is 150ish. My doctor said that I could be around that in 6 months if the pills remain effective. I am also on birth control and for some reason I have been spotting since I started Adipex. My periods are irregular anyway though so I’m not sure if it is because of the Adipex or not. I go back to the doctor in 2 weeks so I will find out then. So far, I love adipex. My doctor did tell me that I would not want to eat period and that I would have to make myself, but that is not it at all. I am hungry all the time. However, I do live an highly active lifestyle. I have been leaving my sodas off, expect for one diet coke a day and I eat less than 700 calories a day. So far it has worked great. The more water I drink, the less I want to eat.
Morgan
AskDocWeb: There are several reports of Adipex affecting the menstrual cycle. See Amanda’s post on October 7th. Keep up the good work Morgan.

Post thyroid removal stories?
Date: 11/30/2011
Ok…morning 2 of adipex. I had radioactive iodine 2 years ago after going into thyroid storm and having graves disease after baby number 3. Have gained 50 pounds since RAI and after being placed on an antidepressant post RAI (2 years ago). Just got off antidepressant and realized how BIG and miserable I am at 185 pounds I usually weigh in at a healthy, muscular 130. Hoping that this will help knock off the weight that my now no thyroid body can’t seem to bun off. Any other post thyroid removal stories on here? I felt actually the opposite of others…feel happy and energetic, didn’t sleep well AT ALL last night! hoping for better tonight. I am currently a tired, overweight 34 year old mother of 3…let’s hope for better! Working out is already a part of my daily life along with being vegetarian…my eating isn’t bad except for my sweet tooth!
Amanda
AskDocWeb: Welcome Amanda! You are the first to post about using Adipex after having the thyroid removed. Insomnia is not unusual during the first few days of using this diet drug. However, that and the extra energy typically go away as your body becomes adjusted to the medication.

Concerned about mood
Date: 12/6/2011
Today was my first day on Adipex and I have noticed tons of energy and thirsty thirsty! I can’t complaine about the energy as I work midnights and took it at 7:30 pm hopefully it keeps me awake all night. One thing I did notice is I’m really warm and my nose is itchy like its numb. It could just be all the increased energy so I will keep note of it and if it continues I will consult my Doctor. I am looking for that boost to get past my weight loss plateau and I think this may help. The concern I have is all the “moody” posts. I already get pretty moody so I hope my husband doesn’t leave me if it gets worse! LOL I will keep posted.
Terra
AskDocWeb: Thanks Terra, and we hope you have good results. A lot of a person’s mood is influenced by what they anticipate. If they look forward to good things, that results in a good mood and vice versa. It’s your choice.
