I’ve been taking 150mg. of aldactone for about 2 years now to treat hair loss. I recently read that this medication has been known to cause cancer in laboratory rats; so I would like to taper off of it. I am wondering how taper off properly?
Lisa
AskDocWeb: That may depend on your current medical condition. Because this drug affects your potassium and hormone levels, you should discuss this with your doctor before discontinuing.
Subj: Increase of cellulite?

does aldactone cause increase of cellulite? I was told that due to dehydration the body tends to store fat.
Maya
AskDocWeb: The product information for Aldactone (spironolactone) does not list an increase in cellulite from Aldactone use. There are several factors that influence the production of cellulite: heredity, lymphatic, intestinal, hormonal, circulatory, liver function, and lifestyle factors. The key to getting rid of cellulite and keeping it off is often found in restoring a healthy metabolism.

AskDocWeb: Aldactone is a trade name for spironolactone, also sold as Aldactazide, Berlactone, Novo-Spiroton, Spiractin, Spirotone, and Verospiron. It has a relatively short half-life however it is metabolized into canrenoate, which has a longer half-life of 10 to 35 hours. After two weeks there would be somewhere between 0.13% and less than one-in-13-billionth of the original dose left. Unfortunately the hormonal effects stay around longer.
According to an article in Nurse Practitioner (2003;28:8-25), The pathogenesis and treatment of PCOS: “It is recommended that Spironolactone be discontinued 3 months prior to conception because of its association with menstrual irregularity and possible teratogenic effects.” Please discuss this with your doctor.

AskDocWeb: Always talk to your doctor before discontinuing any prescription drug. When taking multiple drugs it is very important to check for interactions between those drugs.
