Melatonin?

Thank you for your answer. I am the 76 year old that has been taking tylenol pm and 10 mg of ambien for ten years with no side effects. I looked up tylenol and that is scarier then ambien. The research shows that it can destroy the liver. I have no symptoms, my urine is clear and no pain but I quit taking it last night. No withdrawal symptoms except I cannot sleep as long in spite of continuing with the ambiem. I am thinking of replacing the tylenol pm with melatonin. Does it have any side effects? After reading all the posts I am convinced that ambien works differently for everyone. Do you agree? I love your site, it is so good to be able to ask questions.

AskDocWeb: Thank you Lissette. And yes, Ambien does work differently for everyone. Melatonin seems to be a good choice to help with sleep but there are a few health concerns that you should know about. We have listed them here.

It is me again, Lissette, the 76 year old. I have been on 10 mg of ambien for 10 years with no ill effects. The doctor started me on 20 mg of prevastatin in September for cholesterol. I went back for another blood test this month and it was all normal except for bad cholesterol (about 50 points over). He raised my statin to 40 mg. I am having joint pain and feel that my muscles are rigid. Can the statin do that? It just started after I started taking the 40 mg of prevastatin. Thank you for your answer on Ambien. I decided not to take the melatonin, just want to wait and see what this statin does. Happy New Year.

After quitting cold turkey

Ambien – been taking almost daily for 3 years as a nite nurse. Quit cold turkey about a week ago as my family thought I was having early dementia at 65. Quitting no withdrawals but immediate clearing of thoughts and ability to remember why I walk into a room. I also had weird dreams and was not sure that I got up and ate when I actually did. I am happy to sleep normally. I am doing great.

Considering trying ambien

I have been taking tamazepam for about a month – it’s been very helpful for sleeping but lately wake up with an overall kind of sick feeling – I’m also on lisinopril for high blood pressure and fenofibrate for high cholesterol so thought I should try eliminating one prescription at a time and will begin doing that with tamazapan. How many days (approximately) does it take to clear out the effects of the medication? I am considering trying ambien once I see the results and how effective the withdrawl symptoms react. I am 81. Thank you for your assistance.

AskDocWeb: In general it takes about 5 half-lives for the body to eliminate a drug to the point where it no longer has a clinical effect. For Tamazapan that is just over 3 days (73.5 hours). However it can take twice that long in those over 60 years old. It is a good idea to discuss your plan with your doctor to get his or her feedback. We want you to stay safe.

Pills look different

I recently purchased a bottle of zolpidem Tartrate and it looks like nothing I had before. The “scoring, numbers, etc” are not on my current medication. My current pills are scored down the middle with some on the backside blank, and the others say “6469” accompanied by a “V”. Others are scored with nothing on the back. Do I have safe Ambien?

AskDocWeb: If you bought them online then they may be counterfeit or copycat drugs and may not be safe. If you bought them locally then you can check with the pharmacy that sold them to you.

Trazodone

I have been on Ambein for 4 years now. I never thought to question my Doctor’ wisdom about keeping me on it for that long. Until now. He recently put me on Trazadone due to my asking about the side effects of Ambein. I was to take i ten mg. dose of Trazodone and ween myself off the Ambein by taking smaller doses (pills cut in halves, then quarters). After 4 night of taking just the Trazodone I have not slept more than 4 hours straight through.

I tried upping the dose of trazodone to 2 a night(no more Ambein) and last night I stayed up all night with some sleep coming in the late morning hours. Tonight I am going back on the ambein and have an appointment with my doctor in two days. I Understand that one of the side effects of Trazadone is insomnia. How could someone treat insomnia with a drug that could cause insomnia? I also have a sleep study and phscological exam next week. I sure hope someone gets their sh*t together! Wish me luck.

AskDocWeb: Although Trazodone is primarily used to treat depression it has been successfully used “off-label” for to a number of other problems including insomnia. Since Trazodone has a half-life of 3 to 6 hours it is most likely to be used to treat those who have a hard time getting to sleep and those who have trouble staying asleep. It is less useful in those who wake up too early and can’t get back to sleep. Hope it works for you Berry.

No memory of totaling my car

I had been taking ambien and occasionally have made a mess in the kitchen with no memory in the morning. What is most alarming is I took ambien at 10:00 pm. n went to sleep or so I thought. Some time after 1:00 am I called my son to come n get me as I had totaled my car against a telephone pole. I have no memory and my son said I was like a “zombie”
