Ambien and alcohol
Date: 6/7/2006
I have been experiencing my heart racing and a feeling of pressure in my chest… I don’t take any other meds. I wonder if it could be the Ambien – and – since my doctor never asked me – I never mentioned that I have two sizable martinis every night around 5pm.

Marti

AskDocWeb: You may be headed for serious problems by consuming those two drinks every day. One of the reasons that Ambien is not to be taken with alcohol is that it causes addictive side effects.

Dizzy spinning feeling
Date: 6/8/2006
The one time my doctor gave ambien to me, it made me so dizzy that I felt I was violently spinning for three hours, and could not stop vomiting. This is a very bad drug.

Concern about elderly usage
Date: 6/9/2006
How dose Ambiem affect the elderly (80 years old) and in the nursing home? Mom is given this drug at night and become agitated…plus they give her a pill for anexity and sleep aid. I am concerned that the doc. will keep her on the drug long term.

Kay

AskDocWeb: We suggest you talk to her doctor about your concerns. The main thing to watch for in elderly patients is a change in their ability to control movements, such as eye-hand coordination. Your mother should be monitored for impaired motor performance.

Ambien story
Date: 6/9/2006
Thanx to everyone for this website. My oldest brother has been taking Ambien for about 6 months and his behavior has become unpredictable…totally out of character…anger issues…extra-marital affair…riding his beloved Harley-Davidson recklessly…with him being an upstanding community leader for years…I had first thought of mid-life crisis syndrome…but he became overly agressive with long standing friends and even his own sons…

Years back I was around the druggie movement and my brother never was around that…so when I read the testimonials posted here…it occurred to me this is many of the same things people experienced and told me about when they were on a ‘bad trip of LSD’…that may be why I never thought of the symptoms he told me about could relate to him…but here is something to know…by my personal experiences of being there first hand…that the time period of withdrawal/or wearing off can be very dangerous…for anyone around the person using this drug…and they will have no recollection of the events…what I have seen with my own eyes (from years ago)will never be forgotten…terribly frightening to recall after 25 years.

I have contacted my brother’s doctor to notify him to get my brother on something else…today…WHY? Because he is worth it…THANX AGAIN for all the posts and may God be with you…Sincerely,

Robert

Ambien dreams
Date: 6/13/2006
I have been taking Ambien, 10mg a night for 4 months now. After the third month I starting getting severe muscle pains and acne on my face. I look and feel terrible, but Ambien is the only relief I get from sleep. Nothing else helps. But taking it long term has started posing more side effects. At this time I still prefer getting a good night’s sleep over the acne and muscle pains.

I will say this, Before Ambien, I would have the most realistic dreams but when I woke up I would feel exhausted from all the physical demands from my dreams (running, screaming, etc. My dreams always felt so real… now with Ambien I still have dreams, but they are different. I know when I wake that is was just a dream, a wonderful dream that I can enjoy to recall because I am no longer exhausted from my dreams.

Lunesta
Date: 6/14/2006
I want to thank you all for your comments, I’ve been trying to decide how to treat my insomnia. Not sleeping brings me to tears, I’ve been on Effexor XR for 2 1/2 years now, first they prescribed me Seroquel which worked but I gained weight and it was linked to Diabetes which I have on both sides of my family. I’ve been taking over the counter sleep aids off and on for about a year. My doc gave me samples of Lunesta, because he was out of Ambien. I’ve only been on it for a week but I’ve decided neither are any good for me now. I appreciate all of your comments.

Date rape drug?
Date: 6/14/2006
I’ve been taking Ambien on and off for 6 months, usually with the results of a good night’s sleep (I have SLE). However, last night, according to my boyfriend, we had the most amazing love-making session, which he described in detail, and of which I remember absolutely nothing! This must be what someone goes through in a date rape….no knowledge….no control…VERY scary! No more Ambien for me!

Not good
Date: 6/14/2006
Ambien is addictive for the person with an addictive personality, history of alcoholism and/or other chemical dependency. Slurred speech, serious loss of coordination occur. Snacking to the extreme is seen. Kitchen left in disorder, freezer doors open all night. Complete amnesia noted. Falling common. Have seen one orbital blowout fracture. Have seen relapse to drinking in patient with long term sobriety. Ambien does what it is intended to do. Good drug for short term, specific indication. Have seen it prescribed without careful Hx, available online without difficulty. Not good!

Sleepwalking Dangers
Date: 6/22/2006
I had taken Ambien for several years for severe sleep disorder. I have problems falling asleep and staying asleep. I did advise physician of finding food sitting out, a broiler being on all night, and then two major floods covering my entire home with water. Only then did my physician say that perhaps he should not have let me keep taking it, as these side effects were from the Ambien. He said that I had done well sleeping, and not gone for days unable to sleep as before, and that he was sorry. He stated that he would be willing to state this to help me with homeowner insurance claims. They will not cover this. I had gotten up and run a tub of water and it overflowed all night. This also occurred two years ago, but no one told me why I might have been walking in my sleep and not remembering it.

My home is a wreck. My back has been in severe pain from walking on cement floors for two years since carpets were removed. I am developing allergies and there could be mold in my home. I have been ill and disabled for years, and have run out of money. I live on Social Security Disability. I do not want to lose my home, or become more ill. Where can I go for help? I have researched a lot. I have watched bad reports on Court TV of people sleepwalking and driving. This is so dangerous. Do I have any recourse against the company that advertises so freely this scary medication and holding them responsible? I have property damages and personal pain and suffering. I do not want to lose my home, of which I could rent out rooms if it were livable. Any help from anyone would be greatly appreciated. I have not found any attornies that are interested in the San Diego area. Sincerely,

Peggie

Mom is suffering
Date: 6/23/2006
My mother has been taking Ambien off and on for several years now and it has completely changed her personality, mood and relationship with her family and friends. If you or anyone you know is taking this stuff, it is HIGHLY addictive and can causes numerous more problems than just sleep deprivation. Try an all-natural remedy like melatonine or seratonine vs. Ambien because in the long run it does more harm than good. My mom is suffering immensely now because she did not realize the true effect it had on her body and especially her MIND. If you love your family, mother, sister or whom ever, don’t let them go down a path of self-destruction because they are having a hard time sleeping. Be more active in your daily life and as a family member, be more active in their lives as well. THANKS for listening!

Suicidal tendencies
Date: 6/28/2006
My dad has been on Ambien for the better part of 3 years now. We got him off of it a little over a year ago after he was having suicidal tendencies, severe depressions and very irrational behavior.

He was snappy and hard to live around. I discovered thru my research that it has been responsible for these tendencies with others. We got him off of it and these problems went away. He has been back on it for about 5-6 months and we are having some of these same problems. He is very confrontational and snappy. We’ve got to try to get him off Ambien and keep him off. I would like information of any lawsuits going on and who the lawfirms are as we would like to contact them. Ambien should be taken off the market!

Jerry

CAUTION
Date: 6/29/2006
OBJECTS MIGHT BE CLOSER THAN THEY APPEAR IN YOUR MIRROR! You can seriously hurt yourself with this drug. A hypnotic by definition and categorization, this drug turns off only 1 half of your brain. Motor responses can continue to operate in a coma like state. I wound up in a serious car accident…awaking only after the accident. I do not remember getting out of bed, leaving the house or anything in between! CAUTION -pass the word. I will never take this pill again!
