Subj: Love it
Date: 10/4/2008
I have been taking Bontril for about 3weeks now and love it, some side affects at first, but then they ease off a little, I’ve lost 10lbs already and feel great, alot of dry mouth but it makes me drink more water, a little trouble getting to sleep at night, but have found if I take the pill alot earlier in the morning it will start to ware off earlier in the evening….(hint)… other than that it is great and is doing its job!!! Thanks Bontril…

Subj: The bulge is not budging
Date: 10/13/2008
I have been on the Generic Bontril since July 3rd, so for the past 100 days. I take it once a day and hour before eating. At no point have I notice a huge drop in weight. I am a 27 year old female and 5’4. When I started I was at 189 lbs and I am not down to 172. 4 years ago I was down to 135lbs. I would like to get back to this or at least to a point where I feel better about myself. I have completely changed my eating habits and I rarely eat fast food or high fatty foods. I also work out a minimum of 5 days a week and do at least 1hr of cardio usually on the elliptical. I have never had an issue with headaches, jitters, or problem sleeping. I have 20 days left on my prescription before I have to go back to the doctor to check on my progress. I do have great energy, more focus, and a smaller appetite. I know the pill is not a wonder drug and does not typically do anything if you do not change your life style. I feel like I have done so but feel like I should have lost more by now with all I am doing. Up to this point I have not incorporated any weights into my work outs. I figured I would lose first and then work on toning. But I feel like I have hit a wall and the bulge is not budging. Any suggestions?
Priscilla
AskDocWeb: It is common during weight loss to plateau or level out at some point, and you may go through several such periods. When that happens you may have to change your exercise routine or diet to get things going again. You might try alternating between strength training and aerobics.

Shana
AskDocWeb: Bontril does not cause blood in the stool. Please discuss this with your doctor.

Subj: I feel discouraged
Date: 10/26/2008
I started bontril Oct 14th, today is Oct.26th. My dr. prescribed this for me. I take bontril SR 105MG. It says on the bottle “take one capsule every morning” the first week I took it I felt like my appetite was not as big as it was, and that I was full of energy. And I was leaving food on my plate. And my mouth was dry. I did not feel tired at all, but this week I didnt feel like the bontril was working at all. I’m on a low cal diet and I’m excersicing. I just feel discouraged cuz I dont know if this bontril is working. If I only take one in the mornings. I have not weighed myself yet. How long does it take before this bontril starts kicking in.
Harry
AskDocWeb: Bontril starts working within an hour. If you feel like it isn’t working then contact your doctor to adjust your treatment. You may need to have your daily dosage adjusted or another approach altogether. There are many ways and products to help you accomplish weight loss. Sometimes it is a matter of trial and error to find one that works for you but it is worth the effort to get your weight under control.
Subj: Results vary
Date: 11/2/2008
I started taking generic Bontril On July 3rd. I have only lost about 15 lbs. It has dramatically changed my eating habits and I do have more energy. However, I work out at least 5 days a week for an hour a time. I have not lost anything additional in quite some time. My doctor gave me another 3 months of the drug last Thursday. I see alot of stories about people losing 20+, 30+, 40+ lbs in a month or two. I know the results vary but I feel like it has worked on everyone but me. My doctor and I are both puzzled. Because I am eating great, working out, and getting plenty of sleep. Has anyone ever experienced anything similar?

Subj: Not overweight
Date: 11/9/2008
My mom has been taking Bontril for over 6 months now, she has lost about 40lbs and looks great, but she thinks she has 10 more lbs to lose. She was never obese to start with, and if she loses any more she will look unhealthy. She has been experiencing several of the severe side effects of this drug such as restlessness, irritability, strange behaviors, personality changes, anxiety induced seizures, etc. She refuses to stop taking these and it is ruining her marriage and our family. Her Dr. keeps prescribing them to her, and my dad has even written him a letter to explain her behaviors, but he won’t respond, and he is still giving her a prescription for a refill each month. What can we do? Why does this Dr. prescribe them to her, especially since she is not overweight and since they are only for short term use?
Jenny
AskDocWeb: Sorry to hear about your mom. It may be helpful to ask your doctor how Bontril will affect your anorexic mom. Using the word “anorexic” will make it obvious that you think the weight loss has become unhealthy. If that doesn’t work, complaints about doctors can be sent to your state medical board.
Subj: Should I stop?
Date: 11/11/2008
I was taking Bontril for about 5 weeks, my blood pressure became a little above the norm, but I’m also under stress at work. May I continue to take it or should I stop?
Julie

Subj: Nice to know
Date: 11/12/2008
I start taking bontril tomorrow. I’m 18 and weigh about 200 lbs. I need to lose 35 lbs by February so I can join the military. I also have hypothyroidism. My dr. Didn’t really tell me much about this pill so it is nice to beware of the side effects and to know everyone’s progress. Thank you! Will keep you updated.

I have been on the drug for 4 wks. I have a strange sensation of having to burp a lot. Has anyone else experienced this? It’s like a tightness in my neck. Strange.

I have been using bontril on and off for about three years, usually just five days a week. I was wondering if you could please tell me some of the side effects this may have on me? I am 4’11 and I was 180 pounds in 2005, I lost over half my weight in only 4 months. After 6 months I was 93 pounds and now I am 115 pounds and I have been this weight ever since then. I have noticed that when I dont take it I seem to gain weight very fast and eat all the time, so that is why I was wondering if you could please give me some feed back on side effects.
Cheryl
AskDocWeb: Since you are 4 foot 11 inches tall and 115 pounds, your BMI is already in the desirable range. Additional weight loss may be unhealthy so please talk with your doctor before proceeding. The side effects are listed here. Remember that Bontril is for short-term help in weight loss and is not a long-term solution. Also, using this drug is only one third of the weight loss program. Lifestyle changes also have to be made to the diet and activity level in order to keep the weight off.
Subj: Headaches, dizzy and hearing problems
Date: 1/2/2009
I have been taking Bontril now for about 3 months and yes the headaches are something I get now daily. I have only lost 13 lbs. I’m not sure why it is taking so long for me to lose the weight. I get really dizzy and my hearing comes and goes really fast then goes back to normal? I do have trouble sleeping also, and I think my mood is very up and down with it but I only have 8 more lbs. to go so I will keep taking it until I lose the last 8.

Subj: Bontril works
Date: 1/5/2009
I LOVED Bontril!! I lost 40 lbs in about 3 months. People at work wanted to try it because of my results. I wasn’t hungry at all! This is the only medication that has ever worked for me and I have tried all of the OTC meds. Better still was the increased energy and overall good mental “high”. I actually wanted to excersise. I wish I could get my hands on some again but, my Dr. won’t give me a prescription for that any more.

Date: 1/23/2009
I started taking the Bontril slow release today, I feel just fine and have noticed that it has helped with my appetite too. I was wondering if it is safe to take vitamins, fish oil, flaxseed oil, and biotin with this medication?
