Subj: Shortness of breath
Date: 1/25/2009
I am in my 3rd week of taking Bontril 105 mg extended release and have lost 9 pounds. I am very pleased. The dry mouth is uncomfortable but I am drinking a lot of water. I am having some mild shortness of breath – normally after going up my 3 stories of stairs in my house (which did not cause shortness of breath before starting Bontril) but I can certainly still get a good deep breath. Is this side effect dangerous or will it possibly go away after a while? I have thought of asking for the 35 mg and taking it a couple of times a day instead of the extended release. Does the lower dose work as well?
Lou
AskDocWeb: Since the shortness of breath started after you started taking Bontril, you need to report this to your doctor. That would also give you an opportunity to discuss a possible change in dosage.
Subj: I work in a pharmacy
Date: 1/26/2009
I’m starting Bontril 2morrow! I work in a pharmacy & have seen the great results. I did ok with Tenuate but I’ve heard better things about the Bontril. We’ll see! I am 33 and have hit the BIG 200! I hope to lose at least 50 if not more. I’m not gonna rush it, but just need the extra boost. Good Luck everyone.

Subj: Love the stuff!
Date: 1/29/2009
I have been taking Bontril for 3 weeks. It’s great! I lost 9 pounds so far and feel so energetic! I just can’t stop talking and moving. Maybe that’s how you lose weight. Love the stuff!

Subj: Amazing energy and euphoria
Date: 1/31/2009
I took bontril for 3 months and lost 36 lbs. I loved it!!! I had amazing energy and euphoria. I had to stop taking the medication when I found out I was 6 weeks pregnant. Comming off the med was awful, I slept all day and night for a while and I was extremely depressed. I’m sure my symptoms were amplified due to normal hormonal changes that take place during early pregnancy. During my whole pregnancy I was really worried about any harmful side effects that my baby could suffer from me taking the meds for those first 6 weeks. My fears were put to rest and my daughter just turned a year old this month. I really want to go back on the meds to loose weight I regained during pregnancy and still haven’t lost.

Subj: Bontril cause acne?
Date: 2/2/2009
I have been using Bontril for about 5-6 weeks now and have lost a great amount of weight. My only concern is that I have been having some severe case of acne (or maybe hives) on my face. It’s out of my norm to have this case of acne because of my daily skin care practice. But once I stopped taking the Bontril, my skin started to clear up and going back to what it use to be. Could this be one of the side effects? Thanks for your help.
Lorene
AskDocWeb: Acne is not listed as a side effects of Bontril but there have been three other reports similar to your experience. It is possible that it may be one of those rare side effects that happen to a small percentage of users.
Subj: Panic attack or breathing problems?
Date: 2/5/2009
I have anxiety and I’m scared to take Bontril…will it cause a panic attck or breathing problems?
sue
AskDocWeb: The only people reporting a problem with panic attacks were those who had them before taking Bontril. Rapid breathing is a sign of overdose so that is something you can avoid. As long as you follow your doctor’s instructions you should be fine.
Subj: Bontril was wonderful
Date: 2/8/2009
I used to take Bontril a few years ago and lost around 30 lbs. I have fibromyalgia, and the bontril gave me so much energy! It really helped to combat the fatigue that comes with FMS and the weight just fell off. It’s not for everyone bc I know of some people who took it and couldn’t sleep. But it was wonderful for me and I don’t recall having any bad side effects.

Subj: Depressed
Date: 2/13/2009
I used Bontril for 1 week and loved it, lost 5 pounds and I felt really good and then on day 8 it was like I was so depressed that I could not or did not want to get out of bed. Then I was scared of hearing the news or even scared to watch certain t v shows. This was so weird as nothing like this I have ever experienced before. Then I quit it and one week later I was back to normal and then I waited 2 weeks, tried it again and the same thing happened, and again It took me about a week to get back to normal feeling. I am not a pill take and only take a cholesterol pill nothing els. So wish I could take this and I am still checking out why this keeps happening to me. I loved the pill and for 6 days anyway I felt great and hope someone can help me out, why this happens. Let me know. Thank you,
Jannett
Subj: I lost 9lbs in two weeks
Date: 2/20/2009
I have been taking it for 2 weeks. I lost 9lbs in two weeks. I am like someone else mentioned, very sensitive to OTC diet pills and I feel just fine with this one. I do feel the sensation of being hungry, but not starving. I was told that once I am close to my goal, they will gradually wean me off the medicine so that I don’t experience the rebound and withdrawal effects…. Hope this helps others.

Subj: OTC weight loss product?
Date: 2/24/2009
I have used Bontril in the past and it worked great. However, my physician retired and the doc who picked up his practice will not prescribe Bontril. Can you recommend an OTC weight loss that may be close to the ingredients in Bontril?
steph
AskDocWeb: The closest we can come to that is Alli?. It is an over-the-counter appetite suppressant, also available online.
Subj: 60 pounds over weight
Date: 2/26/2009
I’m in good health besides the fact that I’m 60 pounds over weight. I asked my doctor to prescribe me the Bontril she won’t because she doesn’t believe in it. I really want to try it my cousin is on it and she lost so much weight. What can I do?
nas
AskDocWeb: Ask your doctor what might work better for you. Remember that you have a better chance of success if you focus on your goal rather than the crutch that helps you get there.
Subj: Bontril and topamax?
Date: 3/4/2009
Can u take bontril and topamax at the same time? I haven’t been able to find any evidence of drug interactions between the two meds. I am on topamax and doctor just prescribed me bontril for weight loss.
Wendy
AskDocWeb: Our database does not show any drug interactions between Bontril and Topamax but it may not include every interaction that is known. Remember that you can always check with your pharmacist when you get the prescription filled. If you have any questions they will be glad to answer them.
Subj: Lexapro with Bontril?
Date: 3/10/2009
Bontril works great but I’m also taking lexapro is this common?
Patrick
AskDocWeb: There is a major drug-drug interaction listed between Bontril and Lexapro: “In general, amphetamines and other sympathomimetic appetite suppressants (Bontril) should not be combined with serotonin reuptake inhibitors (Lexapro). Close monitoring for enhanced sympathomimetic effects and possible serotonin syndrome is recommended if these agents must be used together. Symptoms of the serotonin syndrome may include mental status changes such as irritability, altered consciousness, confusion, hallucinations, and coma; autonomic dysfunction such as tachycardia, hyperthermia, diaphoresis, shivering, blood pressure lability, and mydriasis; neuromuscular abnormalities such as hyperreflexia, myoclonus, tremor, rigidity, and ataxia; and gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal cramping, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.”
Subj: GNC Colon Care pills
Date: 3/16/2009
What happens if you take Bontril Slow Release, Lipotropic/vitamin injections and GNC Colon Care pills at the same time. The MD have me on Bontril and Lipotropic/vitamin injections, but I have been taking the GNC Colon Care pills all the time.
Val
AskDocWeb: We haven’t looked at the GNC Colon Care pills yet. In general, we recommend you talk with your doctor before mixing any supplements with prescription drugs.

Subj: Effect on menstrual cycle
Date: 3/19/2009
Can taking Bontril effect your menstrual cycle? I usually get mine around the same time every month but I have not gotten it yet. Also I am taking 35mg twice a day. I only get energy for a couple hours and I only get appetite loss during that couple hours than it is back. I have only been taking it a week now. Is Phentermine stronger or better than Bontril?
Megan
AskDocWeb: While it is not one of the listed side effects (Physician’s Desk Reference 2008) a few women have reported a differences in their menstrual cycle. You know that people respond differently to different drugs and what may work better for someone else may not work at all for you, or even be safe. If you are looking for alternatives, talk this over with your doctor.
Subj: Does Bontril work as good as Phentermine?
Date: 3/25/2009
I was on phentermine the highest dose and I was experiencng a closing of the throat feeling. My doctor now put me on Bontril. Does Bontri work just as good. The phentemine was working. It was just the side effects I couldn’t handle.
Priscilla
AskDocWeb: For some people Bontril works better, it is certainly a good alternative.
Subj: I can’t sleep
Date: 4/20/2009
I’ve been taking Bontril for 7 weeks now and I have lost 15lbs. I stoped takeing it for one weed because I can’t sleep. Now I am just giveing my self one day a week that I don’t take it so I can get at least one good nights rest. Also it makes me feel like something is stuck in my throat. Like it is closing up. Just wondering if this is a normal side affect. Thanks,
Cindy
AskDocWeb: No, that is not a normal side effect. That feeling like something is stuck in your throat may indicate a problem so please tell your doctor about it. Taking Bontril too late in the day is known to cause insomnia. The instructions say to take your last dose of the day at least 4 to 6 hours before bedtime. Read more feedback about Bontril.
