Subj: On Bontril 4 months
Date: 4/23/2009
I’m 60 yr. olds postmenopausal, 40 pounds over weight with mitrovalve prolaspe (heart palpitations) at 160 pounds. I was on Bontril 4 months. Started taking 1×3 a day. First 3 days I had headaches so I started drinking more water and the headaches went away. Third day I started waking up several times a night. Went to bed earlier and now I get my rest.

5th day I started getting too hyper so I stopped drinking coffee and was back to normal in a day. What I experienced more than anything was a sense of confidence and (this is weird) I had a “desire” to want to exercise where before I had always dreaded it. So on the 5th day I started out walking a mile. By the end of the 2nd week I was walking 2 miles I was feeling great and the sleep was still interrupted during the night but I was always able to return to deep sleep. I was working so I set my alarm for 4:30 and woke each morning took a Bontril. I also took with my Bontril a thing I got at the health food store called a nut ball (made by a local). It is kinda like a small cookie with lots of nuts but it’s the size of a ping pong ball (50 calories). I took that so I had something on my stomach. I walked and went to work.

At first the weight came off like 1-1/2 pounds a week. But then I read if you eat something light and healthy every two hrs to keep you metabolism cranked you’d loose more weight. So I did that. I ate a light breakfast of cheerios and milk, salad and a salmon cup for lunch with 6 wheatworth crackers and salad and meat and veg (small sizes) for dinner and in between meals my nut balls. I could never finish my meals because I got full fast. Every single night from day one without fail I made me a icecream of Edy’s slow churn low fat icecream as my reward. I needed something to look forward to and the icecream cone did it.

On my 2nd month I cut back my bontril to 1×2 my sleeping improved mostly because I never took a pill after 1:00 PM. I was up to 3-1/2 miles walking and loving it.

Month 4 my workouts were 5 miles – 6 days a week. In four months this is what I accomplished: First let me say my Heart was NEVER an issue, I was drinking water regularly no coffee and lost 45 pounds! It was the best thing I ever did. I got my 38 yr. old daughter on it who was 50lbs over weight and she did exactly what I did but instead of walking she did Leslie Sansome’s CD’s in her house and she lost 50 pound in 4-1/2 months. She couldn’t buy the nut balls so she had 12 almonds and a small cube of a chocolate candy bar in between meals (go figure but it worked for her). She went from a size 16 to a 4 in 4 months. We’re both 5’4″. Then we weaned off Bontril with no problem.

IN 4 months my habits were in place and I’ve continued everything. That was two years ago. I’ve toned down to 3 miles a day 5 days a week but still eat every 2 hrs. The key is diet but most importantly the exercising and the eating every 2 hrs. Bontril gave me, more than anything, a Psychological boost. Before Bontril I was my own worst enemy but with Bontril I became my strongest advocate. I felt I could stick with anything I tried if I did my part and I did. It gave me the determination to develop good habits and I look twenty years younger. I’m so grateful for Bontril. It worked for me.

Subj: Is this normal?
Date: 4/25/2009
I have been taking it for two weeks and have not lost any weight and still want to eat all the time. Is this normal? Does it take awhile to start working?

Mary

AskDocWeb: No, that is not a typical response to Bontril. It sounds like it is time to check back with your doctor.

Subj: Felt drained
Date: 5/6/2009
I have been on bontril for 5 months I’ve lost 15 lbs and I didn’t have any of those side effects that is posted but I felt very very drained. It didn’t curb my appetite much or give me much energy either… however I did eat less. But due to how I was feeling I stop taking it and I am no longer feeling drained…I feel back to normal again..

Subj: Hair loss?
Date: 5/13/2009
Is there reported hair loss with bontril?

Courtney

AskDocWeb: There are s few reports of hair loss by those who have used Bontril but it is not listed as a side effect.

Subj: Without a prescription?
Date: 5/21/2009
I will like to get bontril but its only prescribed. I will like to know if there’s any way I can get it without a prescription? I really need to lose some weight fast.

Shirley

AskDocWeb: The reason you have to have a prescription in order to get Bontril is for your protection. There are serious dangers involved with prescription drugs and in some cases this could be life threatening. If you really need to lose weight then consult with your health care provider to find out if it would be safe for you to take Bontril.

Subj: I have been on it for 8 days now
Date: 6/3/2009
I am 32 and was up to 223 pounds in April. I have been slowly gaining weight for the last 6 years after I had my third child. I have never turned to meds but felt I needed to do something because I just wasn’t losing on my own, no matter what I did. I tried phentermine 1 month ago and had severe allergic reactions within the 5 days I was on it. I was upset to give it up because I had lost 7 lbs in that time. My Dr. switched me to Bontril 3x per day and I have been on it for 8 days now, not really losing rapidly but that’s okay. I did experience some headaches and mood swings but I am going to try and hang in there. I do notice when the dose begins to wear off because I start to feel anxious and sweaty and think I need to time my doses, rather than taking it before meals. There’s obviously a reason why we are all out here and it’s because we are trying to lose weight. For some it’s easier than others and for some we need the help…so good luck to all and I hope you achieve your goals!

Subj: Results?
Date: 6/20/2009
I just started taking Bontril PDM 35 mg tablets (1 an hour before meal). How soon can I expect to see some results (on average, I understand everyone is different). I’ve had a minor headache now & then, but I attribute that to the cut-back of caffeine. Thank you.

Rachel*

AskDocWeb: Your bathroom scale should start showing results in about a week. If you stick to your diet and exercise program you can make steady progress.

Subj: High blood pressure
Date: 6/22/2009
I have been prescribed Bontril 105MG capsules to lose weight but I also have high blood pressure I take pills for. My doctor says not to worry but I do after reading the warnings on line. Should I be concerned or just take them as he recommends? Your thoughts?

Joel

AskDocWeb: Since it sounds like you are still concerned after talking to your doctor then we suggest you learn more about blood pressure in general. Maybe even learn to take your own blood pressure at home so that you can monitor yourself. It is relatively easy to do. That way you can reassure yourself any time you want.

Subj: I don’t like it

Subj: Bontril is my first choice
Date: 6/24/2009
I’ve taken bontril since last summer and have lost 25-30 lbs recently I’ve notice a pain in my chest on the right side where my haert is. I’m not sure if I should talk to my dr but I love wut it has done for my intense appetite. I would recommend it to any one healthy whos had a hard time losing weight with diet & excercise alone I’m hoping this is the last refill I will need but if I gain again bontril is my first choice.

Tanisha

AskDocWeb: Chest pain is listed as one of the possible side effects that should be reported to your doctor.

Subj: Minor acne
Date: 7/4/2009
I love bontril. I have lost 20 lbs in 4 months. I haven’t had any side effects but minor acne. I rather have acne than be over weight. Acne can go away.

Subj: Blood sugar shifts
Date: 7/6/2009
Please do not use my name: I have taken Bontril for 2 months now and lost 20 pounds. I have taken other prescriptions years ago for weight loss and the side effects with Bontril are significantly less. I have Type II Diabetes and have noticed that I am experiencing hypoglycemic episodes, which haven’t occurred in about 5 years. My blood sugar ranges from about 70 to 150. I had worked hard to get it to stay at around 100 with diet and exercise. I have experienced some sleep loss, not due to the medication, but due to lifestyle changes. So, the blood sugar shifts may be due to that. Are there any other reports of these type of shifts with this medication? I realize that these shifts are not extreme and still close to normal, but the changes cause me to feel faint and nauseated.

Subj: Birth control pills
Date: 7/7/2009
I am on my first week of Bontril and I am just curious if it will counter act with my birth control pills? Thanks.

Sondra

Subj: Excited with the outcome so far
Date: 7/17/2009
Hello everyone, I have been taking bontril for about 9 days now and I have not experienced any side effects whatsoever. In fact I am extremely excited with the outcome so far. I have lost 11 pounds which is absolutely amazing considering I have taken everything out on the market these days and seen no real results. I will admit that I have tremendously cut down the amount of carbohydrates as well as boosted my intake on water and excercise. The combanation seems to be working well so far. The only thing I really did notice was a dry mouth at first which caused me to drink water more frequently. I am very pleased so far.

Subj: Not working for me
Date: 7/21/2009
I have bee on Bontril for about 6- weeks now and have only lost 5 pounds; it’s not working for me. Last year I was on Adepix and lost 20 pounds in the same amount of time, but my doctor took me off of those because they made my BP go up very high.

Subj: Should Bontril work immediately?
Date: 7/22/2009
I am on my 3rd day of taking Bontril and have noticed only a small decrease in my appetite and only in spurts. Seems the time release ‘kicks in’ only so often. I still go through periods of being extremely hungry. I am also a lot more tired than before. I have low thyroid and just received a new prescription for that approximately 3 days before the Bontril. I could tell a difference immediately and started feeling better. Now that I’ve added the Bontril, I’m back to being tired. Should Bontril work immediately or should I give it a few more days?

Amy

AskDocWeb: Bontril starts working within an hour. If you feel like it isn’t working then contact your doctor to adjust your treatment. Your dosage may need to be adjusted or you may need another approach altogether. Read more feedback about Bontril.
