Subj: Taking Bontril with thyroid medication?
Date: 7/23/2009
This is only my 3rd day of taking Bontril, but for the first 2 days I was extremely tired and still starving. I did not feel like the Bontril was having ANY effect whatsoever. I mentioned it to a friend that asked me what time I was taking it…5 AM along with my thyroid medication. She recommended me moving it to 9 AM in order for it to last all day. I did and that made all of the difference in the world. I feel like I actually have energy today, clear thoughts, and I am not near as hungry. I’m wondering if taking it with my thyroid medication lessened the affect somehow. Just thought I’d pass this on in case others are experiencing the same thing. I think it actually has nothing to do with what time I took the Bontril, just the fact that I took it alone.

Subj: Bontril for 5 months
Date: 7/26/2009
I have been taking the generic for bontril for 5 months now… I have lost 30 lbs.. However, I have not lost anything for the past 5 wks… should I stop taking this pill. I take one a day 105 mg @ 7am. By 9 PM I have a ravenous appetite…. I want to stop. How and when should I? Thank you.
Sylvia
AskDocWeb: As with all anorexigenic drugs, the body has a tendency to build up a tolerance for the drug and over time it loses effectiveness. That is why they are recommended only for short-term use. It sounds like it is time to consult with your doctor about changing your approach.
Subj: Tic in my eye
Date: 7/29/2009
I’ve been taking Bontril for a little over 3 weeks now. I’ve gotten a bit of a tic in my eye, but it went away. The only other side effect I’m experiencing is dry mouth, which I’m used to from taking Acutane awhile ago. Otherwise, it has worked great! I’ve lost 16 pounds. 🙂

Subj: Post pregnancy
Date: 7/30/2009
Just about to take Bontril. For those people who have lost weight were they exercising and dieting too? I exercise and diet everyday and need to lose 20 – 30 lbs post pregnancy. Will Bontril work for me?
Danielle
AskDocWeb: Those who have had the best success with Bontril combined it with diet and exercise.
Subj: Abdominal pains
Date: 8/1/2009
I started having abdominal pains about a week after starting Bontril but didn’t stop. It has been about 3 months and does work but still having abdominal pains on the left side of the stomach. Going for EGD and colonoscopy in August. MD only told me to take the med every other day. Wasn’t told to stop them. Not sure Bontril has anything to do with the pain only that it did start around the time I started taking it. But it does decrease the appetite sufficiently. I loose about 2-2.5 lbs per week.

Subj: Itching
Date: 8/2/2009
I am taking bontril for a couple months and my arms are about to itch me to death.. is this a side effect?
Judy
AskDocWeb: No, itching is not listed as a side effect of Bontril but it is one of the warning signs of a drug reaction so check with your doctor.
Subj: Hair loss
Date: 8/12/2009
I had a question as to hair loss like one of the others. After being on Bontril for the last 5 months, I noticed I am loosing hair. Over the last two weeks more than ever. I am considering stopping taking it. I have lost weight, about 40 lbs.
Rita
AskDocWeb: The manufacturer does not list hair loss as a side effect of Bontril but a growing number of people are reporting hair loss here.

Subj: Hair loss and multivitamin
Date: 8/20/2009
I have been taking bontril for about 4 months and have lost 30 pounds. For one of those months weight did not budge and then I started to lose again. The weight loss is much slower now, but it is still coming off. The only thing I highly recommend is take a multivitamin daily. I stopped taking mine and for some reason my hair is falling out, when I wash it I see more. Started taking vitamin again and can tell a big difference. Highly recommend.

Subj: Very surprised
Date: 8/20/2009
Hi everyone. I used this board a lot when I was deciding to take Bontril, so I will definately post my feedback as well. I only started taking bontril yesterday and I have to say I was very surprised. I do not really “feel” anything out of the norm. I have just as much energy as I used to even though I have not had any coffee for the last two days, but that is really the only difference. Doc gave me bontril 105 to take in the morning, then an additional one to take in the afternoons if I’m hungry. I am going to try to just use the 105. I have a history of insomnia, so the doc also gave me ambien which I took last night, but I don’t think I needed it, so I will discontinue. Both days I have just eaten a slice of whole wheat bread with a little turkey for lunch and a healthy dinner. I do still feel a little hungry, but I don’t feel the need to devour the cookies and treats in the breakroom at my office! I will update in a couple of weeks. I am currently 5’7” and 159. My goal is 140. I am a 24 year old female. Is it normal that I am not experiencing the energy levels that other’s speak of?
Heather
AskDocWeb: Let’s see, you no longer get the stimulation from caffeine because you stopped drinking coffee yet your energy levels feel the same? It sounds like you are getting some increase in energy or you would miss that boost from the coffee. Remember, that phrase “Your results may vary” applies to you too.

Subj: Where to get Bontril
Date: 8/22/2009
I want to try bontril – where can I get it?
Nicole
AskDocWeb: Since Bontril is a prescription drug, you will need the approval of your doctor first. Once you have that, take your prescription to your local drugstore.
Subj: Bontril worked great
Date: 9/8/2009
I used bontril for about a year and lost 20 lbs, I really liked it and it worked great, I was in menopause and couldn’t seem to get the weight off without it, I was doing it through a doctor and I also took adipex with it, I got off of it for 3 months now, I wasn’t addicted to it and haven’t gained the weight back, I did have problems with my bowels, but I took benefiber and that worked, overall, the pill has been great and no side affects, it does make you thirsty but drinking the water helps you to feel full and you still need to eat but just eat healthy, not junk foods.

Subj: Suggestions on quitting Bontril
Date: 9/8/2009
I have been taking bontril for a long period of time over a year. Even though it doesn’t work for me anymore I’m very addicted and I’m getting married next year. I want to get pregrant and I know I cant until I stop taking this medication but every time I try I feel like I’m going to have a heart attack. Do you have any suggestions on how I can stop taking this drug?
Gale
AskDocWeb: The safest way is to talk this over with your doctor and maybe get something to help with the withdrawal effects.
Subj: Liver enzymes?
Date: 9/26/2009
Can Bontril make your liver enzymes increase? I was taking it for several weeks and notice my annual liver enzymes were elevated. Had an ultrasound that was negative for liver disease.
Tina
AskDocWeb: Sorry Tina, we were unable to locate any reports of Bontril causing changes to liver tests.
Subj: Long-term use of Bontril?
Date: 9/29/2009
My husband and I started exercising and trying to eat better approx 6 months ago. He lost over 40 lbs I lost 2 lbs. After being very frustrated, I asked my doctor for help. My doctor gave me a 30 day perscription of Bontril. I noticed I lost about 10 pounds after the first week and maintained it the next few weeks. As far as side effects I did have a little constipation and some difficulty sleeping, not sure if it was drug related. Did notice my energy and libido increased, which was great! I’ve been off the medicine for about 5 days since my perscription ran out, I noticed I’ve been more tired, not wanting to exercise, libido decreased, and my breast feel swollen and tender (possibly water weight again.) Looks like I put 1 to 2 lbs back on and am definetley snacking more. Looking forward to seeing my doctor today to get my perscription refilled. My only concern is that I hope this medicine isn’t a quick fix, and the weight comes back with a vengence like many weight loss programs. If this medicine is only supposed to be used for approx 8-12 weeks, what will happen when you surpass this time frame?? Can u be on this medicine long term? I know the winter months are around the corner and this is when I really have a hard time with self control and exercise any advise would be helpful!!
Cindy

Subj: How long does it stay in your system?
Date: 9/29/2009
How long does Bontril stay in your system after you’ve stopped using it? Does it show up on blood tests?
P
AskDocWeb: Most of it will be out of your system in just a few days. It will show up on a blood test if they are looking for it.
Subj: Withdrawal effects
Date: 10/2/2009
I started using bontril in July 2009 and it worked wonderful. Lost 25 pounds, but I started getting sever migraines. My teeth were sore and a touch of insomia. I also noticed when I stopped bontril I had these pea sized bumps on my neck and behind my ears. What are the withdrawl effects?
Lita
AskDocWeb: The only withdrawal effects that have been reported are depression and fatigue.
Subj: Bontril dosage
Date: 10/10/2009
I have been taking the generic form of Bontril. If I eat anything right after taking it. It doesn’t seem to work. Also I was told that the 30mg dose can sometimes be increased to one and a half of the tablets since they are perforated. Is this true, I wouldn’t do it without asking my doc. Just wondering!
Kat
AskDocWeb: The maximum dose of Bontril seems to be 70 mg three times daily. Of course your doctor will be able to tell you what dosage would be safe for you to take.
Subj: Anyone else?
Date: 10/13/2009
I have been taking Bontril for about 3 weeks now and I don’t feel it is doing anything. Does anyone else feel this way?
Rebecca
