Subj: Lost 73 pounds
Date: 12/4/2009
I have been takin bontril, for about 4 months. I have gone from 342 pounds to 269! The increased energy I felt at first I used to excercise. At first I couldn’t walk more than 5 minutes on the treadmill. Now I am up to 1 hour and twenty minutes. I have noticed some side effects, constipation and extremely dry mouth, but other than that nothing. I am now considering stopping the medication and going it alone, but I am afraid I’ll gain weight… Going to discuss it with my doctor today…

Subj: I’ve lost 36 lbs
Date: 12/7/2009
Hi. I’ve been taking bontril for about 9 weeks I’ve lost 36 lbs and I’ve noticed that it works best if you take it as soon as you wake up. Since I’ve been doing that I’ve lost a ton of weight I’ve dropped 7 sizes I have more energy my sleep apnea has disappeared completely I take the one in the morning and I have no problem sleeping at night. You do have to eat I never really feel hungry but like a car with no gas if you dont eat it wont work I’m almost to my goal weight then I will discontinue …good luck all

Subj: Not worth the side effects
Date: 12/19/2009
I took Bontril for approximately one month. I did, indeed, lose 15 pounds. Following my one month mark, I suffered EXTREME ANXIETY, NERVOUSNESS, HEART PALPITATIONS, SERIOUS PHYSIOLOGICAL and PHYCHOLOGICAL AFFECTS!!! I personally WOULD RATHER BE FAT THAN CRAZY!!!!!!!! Not worth the side effects and all the medical tests they are having to run to find out what is unbalanced and how to fix it.

Subj: Amazing results
Date: 12/23/2009
Botril gave me amazing results with very little side effects. I have taken it for 1 month and lost 15 pounds which my weight goal is to lose 25pounds which I’m almost there. the only side effect is restless nights but I’ve learned that if you take it about 6am it helps a little with getting a better night rest. I did get horrible head aches the fist 2 days but have not experienced any since. I love BONTRIL.

Subj: Headache and pressure behind eyes
Date: 2/24/2010

Subj: Face is breaking out
Date: 3/15/2010
This is my 2nd week of Bontril along with a calcium pyruvate and the B-12 injections. I have noticed a change in my appetite but I havent noticed a change in my weight yet. However, it is only the beginning of my 2nd week. I have noticed that my face is breaking out very bad and I also noticed that even if the idea of eating is repulsing after your Bontril has kicked in, if I did not eat, I was very spaced out and disconnected at work to the point that it was interferring with my job. Otherwise, I have experienced the normal side effects of dry mouth and overstimulation. So far, the pros of losing the excess weight has outweighed the cons of Bontril. Best wishes to everyone trying it!!!

Subj: Using Bontril without my doctor’s knowledge
Date: 3/27/2010
I am currently taking Lamictal and Seroquel XR; however, I gained about 10 pounds on seroquel (i think this is the one doing it). I have been taking Bontril for the last week and a half. I have not lost weight but staying at the same weight (which is good i suppose). No one has addressed if Bontril can make the depression worse. I am doing this without my current doctor’s knowledge because he would not give me anything unless i was 250 pounds or more. I had Bontril from another doctor awhile back. Bontril made me have a breakdown the first time; however, I just thought maybe this time if i counter-acted it then it would be ok. Will Bontril do this or is my depression get worse?

Laura
AskDocWeb: Sorry Laura, we do not support the illegal use of drugs, which is what it sounds like you are doing. Have you considered the possibility that the reason your doctor will not prescribe Bontril is that it made you have a breakdown the first time you tried it?

Subj: Stomach upset, nausea and ears ringing
Date: 3/29/2010
I have lost about 15lbs in 10 weeks while taking one 105mg time released capsule a day. I have been suffering a lot of stomach upset and nausea. I also hae severe fatigue. I have a symptom I do not see in these comments. My ears are ringing very loud. So loud I can hardly think. It drives me crazy. Anyone else have these symptoms?

Beatriz

AskDocWeb: The nausea and upset stomach may be side effects of Bontril but fatigue and ringing in the ears (Tinnitus) are unusual so talk to your doctor about that.

Subj: No bowel movement
Date: 3/29/2010
I have been on Adipex for just about a week and it has already been doing wonders for my appetite and energy. However, I haven’t had a bowel movement in 4 days now! I’ve never experienced this before as I am always regular. What can I do to “get things moving”?

Marie
AskDocWeb: The easiest thing you can do is drink more water, two to four glasses a day unless you are fluid restricted by your doctor. Fresh fruit is a tasty way to get things moving and are colon friendly. Here are the top ten fruits that help with constipation.

  • Raspberries
  • Blackberries
  • Strawberries
  • Prunes
  • Papaya
  • Orange
  • Apple
  • Pears
  • Figs
  • Avocado

Remember it’s not only what you eat but how you are eating. Be sure that you are not rushing to eat meals and eating at odd times. Make sure you chew your food well because digestion starts in the mouth. Saliva has enzymes that chemically work on your food before you ever swallow. Each mouthful should be chewed at least 15 times.

Subj: Underactive thyroid?
Date: 3/31/2010
Has anyone taken this with an underactive thyroid? And how affective was it???

Chloe

Subj: Bontril with Levothyroxine?
Date: 3/31/2010
I have hypothyroidism, I am 18 years old and weigh 200 lbs, I am active and exercise at least 4 days a week. I was diagnosed with my underactive thyroid about 6-7 months ago and they say my levels are within the normal range now. But, when I first went in I only weighed 160 and have gained 40 lbs! I believe they need to up my dosage, but I would love to be put on Bontril for a while to shed off the excess weight, do you think it would work well with my levothyroxin and overall will I lose weight?

Chloe
AskDocWeb: We found no drug interactions listed between Levothyroxine and Bontril but you will have to check with your doctor to find out if it might work for you.

Subj: Headache
Date: 4/13/2010
I have been taking Bontril for two days. About 4 hours after taking my first pill got a headache and it has not gone way. Should I stop taking the Bontril? Headaches are listed as a side effect on prescription information that I received from Walgreens.

Priscilla

AskDocWeb: Headaches are listed as one of the possible side effects of Bontril that may go away with continued use, if it persists or becomes bothersome then check with your doctor.
